I read the article.

>TV Line confirms that the original cast—Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko); SpongeBob himself, Tom Kenny (Heffer); Mr. Lawrence (Filburt); Charlie Adler (Ed and Bev Bighead); Linda Wallem (Aunt Gretchen); Jill Talley (Nosey); and series creator Joe Murray (Ralph)—will return to voice their characters in the special.

It's tradition at Nick for writers to write a joke "end of the world" script for their shows when it gets canned. The Angry Beavers' voice actors just did a reading of theirs for shits and giggles.

Most of the others are full of murder and rape. Pelswick's, in particular, was supposedly graphic as hell.

>>

Storyboard jam that was destroyed except for that page.

Previous page had Tommy putting dog food and drain cleaner in the juice, page after has Angelica rubbing Stu's giant BALLS OF THUNDER.
>>
>>93424887
From the Lost Nedia Wiki
>A "storyboard jam" is a storyboard that is started, passed around and added to by different members of the production crew of a cartoon, often resulting in rather lewd or offensive depictions.
>One such storyboard jam, titled "Incredible", began life around 1998 within the Klasky-Csupo production crew of Rugrats (according to a now-deleted livejournal recount posted by one of the directors/animators of Rugrats, Steve Ressel[1]). Ressel has recounted that the first page of the storyboard consisted of "Angelica being a bitch to Tommy, so Tommy gets her a drink in the kitchen and puts in dog food and draino, then toddles back to Angelica". After being handed the comic, Ressel initially pushed it away in disgust, before eventually making some additions of his own. The first page added to by Ressel (the third page overall, and the only one that he was able to recover and post online) depicts (after Tommy returns to Angelica with the poisoned drink), Stu arriving home before angrily abusing everyone and making sexual remarks to Angelica, while Tommy twitches uncontrollably. Allegedly, some of the other artists were displeased with Ressel's additions to the plot, though regardless of their disapproval he continued the storyboard, beginning the next page with "a close up of Stu's crotch (on model) and then a cut away showing his entire pelvis is in fact two tight and well rounded testicles with a tiny cock dangling from above. Lightening was bouncing around and words appeared saying 'BALLS OF THUNDER!', or something to that effect".

CONT
>
In total, Ressel ended up adding roughly 12 frames to the storyboard, whereas most of the other artists had previously contributed just 3-4 frames each. After this point, the comic was given to other artists to add to, and this later resulted in images of Angelica's hands stroking Stu's testicles, followed by a barrage of incest sex scenes. Ressel has noted "I was disgusted, even, when I saw what had become of the comic". While someone was taking the storyboard to show the production crew of The Wild Thornberrys, an executive producer "saw it, was disturbed, and confiscated the jam... and thus it ended". It is unknown if the missing pages were destroyed or simply locked away, but either way, it's unlikely we will ever see any more pages of this infamous comic.

It is kind of fun that we are getting to see Rocko again

I kind of want Viacom to try again. Viacom was huge in the 90's but now all they ever do is rely on nostalgia and constantly say "Hey remember the 90's guys? We were cool in the 90's! Let's have a 90's rewind weekend again!"

On all their networks now. Nick and Mtv are the biggest offenders. They are not bothering with content at all, just showing off things they made 20 years ago and whoring around middle aged Pete and Pete.

We are in a more daring time in some ways
>more adult cartoons
>more gay shit on screen
>more story driven cartoons
>different types of adult jokes
Back in the 90s you were either a comedy or a superhero show.

you see, the deal is most of these old toons would bring up sensible matters in a unique way. it wasn't out the loop for them to lampshade instances of controversy like homosexuality by way of dark humor and satire, which brings us to rocko with its particular depiction of a world that conveys its general view of the society in the late 90's with its overly saturated look that emanates depression and enforces a consumerism hyperbole.

most of the issues they deal with now involve 'acceptance' and fully embrace the progressive scheme in fear of their skin-papered audience shaking off their foundations because of the possibility of misconceived notions that they could gather from their messages. everyone's out to feel offended but they don't want to say so out loud, so they keep it toned down for their own sake.
>>
>>93425388
Yeah that line pissed me off. Aside from the implied lesbianism (never mind the cartoons that actually have the balls to show actual gay relationships,) SU is about as daring as running from the car to the front door while it sprinkles.
>>
>>93425812
I agree that they are portraying adult issues for acceptance but i dont think making them just jokes in the 90s is that much riskier either. Its different types of approach that both work on their own way.
But maybe thats because i dont mind/care about gay people.
>>
>>93425812
to this I might add the presence of a generally more toned down aesthetic in modern cartoons that effectively reflects and reinforces this mindset. it's not unusual for most contemporary shows that touch upon a modern world setting to employ a limited range of pastel coloring and sterile background work that is easy on the eyes. everything is alright, everyone is unique in their own way/ditzy/wacky but none of them are profusely, inherently offensive, remarkably aggressive or threatening, all features which you in fact DO notice in modern hero-themed shows now.

the grungy look is kept for the most part in shows like pig goat banana cricket and right now kapow, but the adult factor is almost entirely replaced by loud fart jokes and random annoyingly fast-paced humor that supposedly mimicks the look and feel of old cartoons but generally misses the mark.
>>
>>93425411
All Nick, Mtv, CMT, Spike, Comedy Central, Vh1,
>>
>>93426110
I don't believe new shows are automatically bad because of the way they manage jokes or what their focus is. I'm just sperging in on the whole 'rocko wouldn't work nowadays' argument that I generally agree on.

they'd change it in spirit to a point where it would no longer feel like rocko. I'm not even all that crazy about rocko myself though I can appreciate its merits.

>>93426214
I never thought about it that way, huh. I had a general idea of how a show's look affected its feel by way of looks but never took the general soft cutesy, borderless aesthetic as mutually exclusive from the way they're presented.
>>
>>93425080
Where's that censor bar.
>>
>>93425451
So cartoons have caught up with basic storytelling then?

Fuck, even I Love Lucy had arcs where the characters would spend five or so episodes in California or on vacation. You really think somehow AT having "bomb arcs" like that is new in anyway? In fact, action cartoons with continuity were more prevalent in the early 2000's than now. Xiaolin Showdown, Jackie Chan Adventures, Avatar, Danny Phantom, Static Shock, Jake Long.

It's not even like we have "more" lore shows compared to before, because 90% of cartoons that air are still episodic comedies. The only thing we have more of are non-comedic confirmed gay characters, and that's only really Steven Universe and Loud House. And that isn't going to hold the test of time in daring just like how the novelty of The Jeffersons and Sanford & Son featuring a black family has worn off, especially when better things have come along like Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In a decade, Steven Universe is going to get its ass kicked by a better show with the same themes.

I mean fuck, Courage has constant themes about love and bravery and does it ten times better than SU and they don't need the novelty of "half our cast is gay" to stay relevant.
>>
I'm skeptical that it will translate to modern culture, though that's apparently the focus of the episode. I suppose we'll see if they aged after a generation.

>BALLS OF THUNDER
>>
All the people saying "Rocko wouldn't work today," Joe Murray himself said a couple years ago that most of the issues Rocko touched on are if anything even MORE relevant now than in the 90s. Remember that this was a cartoon that made an incredibly cynical episode about the hell of air travel, and that was BEFORE 9/11.
