The only problem I have with the new Godzilla design is the color and weight. He looks like the stereotypical American's idea of Godzilla: A green, tubby and spiked dinosaur...or Reptar. I 'm okay with keeping his weight, honestly as I feel it's not a bad choice and ultimately still preserves the design and character, but a palette change and MINOR aesthetic alterations would be nice.

More specifically, I want these:
-More menacing teeth
-Whiter spines/scutes
-Make his head in proportion to his body

The amount of change I want is how much change Superman's costume got in Man of Steel...except, you know...for a reason to improve a design.

However, I'm relatively pleased with the design as is. It really does look good, and I think people shit on it or like it too much because it's "new", when really what makes it incredible is how intricate and well-thought out it is. Gareth Edwards spent our with the people making the model with it on, like, Skype to get it right. He wanted a creature that could look good in many angles and retain his vision. He did that extraordinarily well.

Also, the introduction scene in Hawaii where they show an airport terminal with people running around and a plane falling, and a giant leg stomps in the background and everyone goes quiet. Then they do a full body shot of Godzilla from toe to head, followed by a full THX volume SKREEONK.

holy shit was that scene perfect.

It's a shame that for the rest of the movie, they ALWAYS changed scenes right as the monsters started fighting. Sometimes with something stupid like the camera showing the closing doors of a van or so. Retarded.

Other than cockblocking too many of the monster fights from being shown, it was a great movie.

I don't play video games but I enjoyed it. Takes patience, but if you love Godzilla, you should get it. It's nowhere near as fun as Godzilla:Save the Kino, or Godzilla: Kino All Monsters Melee, and if you enjoyed Godzilla: Unleashed, you'll like this game. It's not horrible, really. It just gets boring after an hour or two. It's just standard at worst. It's strangely a fun party game too despite being one-player.

Still, I haven't played it (or any other game) in a year and a half now, but that's because I try not to play video games anymore.

Get it cheap. It's nothing extraordinary, but it's fun to have.

I mean, it wasn't a bad movie, but it just felt so bland and not like Godzilla. It felt like I was watching a completely different creature with subpar effects half of the time

First I heard of it, and it doesn't sound at all believable. Edwards has said quite a few times in interviews that was all him and his style of wanting the audience to yearn for more. He also said he'd do the same for Godzilla 2 before he left the project.

From my experiences on many kaiju forums I can tell you guys that in general, the kaiju fanbase is incredibly hypocritical and retarded

Take James Rolfe and his fanboys who parrot everything he says like the gospel for instance, he said that G14 wasn't a "real" Godzilla film because it didn't use a suit, and then had to backtrack in order to not say that about Shin Godzilla and had to day "But Japan giuze!!!!1!1"

Fun fact: G14 and Shin had about the same amount of Godzilla screentime, G14 had more kaiju action if you count the MUTO scenes, yet no one that complained about G14's screentime complained about Shin's in fact G14 had more screentime than most Godzilla movies, and no one like to talk about that.

Also I have talked to many people who outright said that if Legendary made the changes that they made in Shin that they would hate it and not consider it a real Godzilla

I eventually got banned because according to the mods many people complained about how I was too negative, and then another negative person got promoted to a mod position

For the most part, I agree with you...but I can understand why people are more triggered by G14.

In that movie, when you DO finally see Godzilla, it teases you with a "nope, not yet". That's what got people pissed. It was that, and waiting for the fight at the end. However, the fight at the end gets interrupted quite often.

Now personally, I was fine with it. I felt satisfied by the end of the movie because I liked the ending because I was interested in how they were gonna get the bomb outta the city.

But yeah. Screentime argument is bullshit, imo. And James, I was dissappointed that he didn't like the American movie, because in many ways, its exactly the Godzilla HE thinks of: big green monster that saves the day and is badass. Shin Godzilla was overtly Japanese, though. I'm surprised how many American fans liked it. It is more an artistic breakdwn about what makes Godzilla....godzilla! I have to respectfully disagree. One of the most unique aspects of Godzilla is his ability to be a hero, neautral, or villain. It's what makes him universal right next to the concepts he stands for (the atomic bomb, WWII, the death of the old and birth of the new...). It's like Batman, except so much more versatile.

But yes, I think many people were expecting G14 to be about an antagonistic Godzilla in the vein of Godzilla 2000 or Shin Gojira.

There wasn't really a need to expand on the individuals any further. They served their purpose in the plot and were overall subservient to the film's message. It's a film about politics, so we only see their professional lives, but developing their personal lives would have been needless fluff.

I know this is something of a clichéd defense, but it's true. The main character that went through development was Japan's political system itself. The plot and message weren't too concerned with the individuals. It's a valid way of telling a story even if it's different from what most people, especially in the west, are accustomed to.

This. Like it or not, the 2014 version was very Westernized (as is the idea of Godzilla in general in the West) and becomes very basic. Shin Godzilla was an artistic approach that not only broke the formula, but broke almost all we knew about Godzilla...and made it WORK. I remember Anno said he was terrified that fans would hate it, and I remember hearing what GOdzilla would be and hating it...then I saw it. The first thing I thought was: "Wow, people are REALLY gonna hate me for liking this" and "No one'll treat my opinion on Godzilla seriously, but I love this!". Turns out everyone else liked it. To be honest I was sorta fearful before the movie came out. Those older press reports said they would be aiming for a wider appeal and sell the film to 100 countries. Then the news that they're redoing the effects midway through with CGI (and knowing Japanese-tier CGI, that wasn't an encouraging development), and later it turned out they're ramping up the boardroom scenes even more than usual. I didn't know what to expect.
But in the end I liked the movie overall and I realized that it was a good call that they abandoned the global mass-appeal approach. It wouldn't have worked no matter how hard they tried. Instead they focused on their home market and made the movie very contemporary Japanese, and judging by its success, this may have been exactly what the franchise's Japanese side needed.

That's in part because of the way the movie was advertised, in America at least. The mutos weren't even shown in the first few previews, and the commercials were very sober in tone, juxtaposing shots of horrendous death and wreckage with teasing shots of godzilla, making one think that he was the one causing all this carnage.
Hell, even shots that featured the mutos in the actual film were edited to only contain godzilla roaring and being threatening.
Thus most of the viewing audience went in expecting godzilla to be the antagonist, or at the very least a much harsher anti-hero.

Overall a good movie. Suffered from a slow second act where it went on a tirade about Japan's position in the world and the effects were mediocre at times but it was an overall well done movie combining satire with some terrifying scenes of Godzilla rampaging and body horror.
