Conan isn't the berserk of anything.

Micheal Moorecock is the most over-rated author I've ever read.

OK I'm a fan of Alan Moore, Dave Sim, Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, Bryan Talbot, ect. Most of these guys point to the Elric and Jerry Cornilius as inspirations and say that he's this amazing author who inspired them, and is therefore the genesis of modern mature comics in the same way The Rolling Stones where the precursors to Punk Music.

I've read his stuff and all I get out of it is, "It's a bit more ironic than the genre it's attempting to "parody" (not quite the right word, but you get my drift).

Let's put it like this.
Beyond the fact that Yoshitaka Amano drew the covers to many of Moorcock's books for the Japanese releases but Daicon IV, the famous short animation film made by the same people that made Gainax afterwards?
The most featured element in that film besides the heroine is Stormbringer itself.

Think of that for a beat.
It wasn't Gundam, other anime or even more famous characters from comics and Star Wars they decided to spend all that time animating.

They chose Stormbringer out of all things they could have picked. And even reference the novel of the same name by having it split into clones of itself.

Think about it. Moorcock is definitely known in Japan.

>>
>>93388109
They did have top taste when it came to music.
>>
>>93388049
past a certain point the only difference between them is the terms the narrative uses. By example there's no real difference between "magitech" settings and archetypical space operas.

My rule of thumb:

if it talks about aliens, technology, the sciences, space and time exploration, and subtle and not-so-subtle politics and cultural criticisms etc, it's sci fi.

if it talks about mythical races, magic powers, and concepts such as destiny, fate and things that follow the general concept of chosen ones, it's fantasy.

>>93388107
By the time Moorcock came around there was a clear distinction between fantasy and space operas. Asimov came around and Star Trek had already codified Sci Fi as we know it today

Elric>I just wanted to summon a water sprite to impress the tavern girl. I apologize for the lumbering brute sitting next to us attack it and sending it into a frenzy. Next time i'll make sure the local drunks are only half as dumb
Guts>Whatever. Just be sure to keep that sword of yours sheathed. I heard it whispering last night and i don't take bullshit like that kindly

Only issue I see here is that Elric would insist on riding, dude is almost never without a horse, landship or magical conveyance of some sort between adventures (in keeping with his 'dissolute noble' theme.)

Guts almost never can keep a horse alive, meanwhile it really depends with Conan, but his tendency to wander trackless wastes and his abilities as a tracker/thief means he operates best on foot.
>>
>>93388624
>in keeping with his 'dissolute noble' theme.

>>
>>93385920
Why do you make an elric thread every day?
>>
>>93388797
>>93388624

Here we go
What is most interesting to me, is that Zenith was of Eastern European nobility. The loss, sadness—and it may seem a contradiction when considering the threat he presented, but the helplessness—so predominantly a part of him, stemmed from the Great War, when his native part of the world was reshaped, royal houses fell, and nobles were reduced to the status of common men.

Skene, however, was an English writer, so what we’re really referencing here is the fall of English nobility, the members of which, through enforced wartime exposure to “common people,” lost their mystique. The gentry had been haplessly thrust into a world they didn’t fully comprehend, and Zenith occupied that same liminal territory between the old and the new, neither of the past nor of the present, and for sure not of the future.

Michael Moorcock tapped the same vein superbly with his Elric stories. Inspired by Zenith, he gave his own albino exactly the same disconnectedness. Elric doesn’t just witness the fall of the past to which he belonged, he is instrumental in its destruction, and the loss would be intolerable were it not for his own version of opium: Stormbringer, the soul-sucking sword that could kill him at any moment.

The feeling of alienation is near heartbreaking in both cases. In the Elric tales, the fantasy setting maybe soothes the existential angst a little (unless you're a teenager, in which case, OUCH!), but with Zenith, the author was writing in exactly the period of history that saw this estrangement visibly represented throughout the land. Every city, every town, every village had its men who'd once "been something" now reduced to cripples or shellshocked wrecks. Wherever the "upper class" had been present, there were now nobles exposed as vulnerable, as delicate, and as breakable as the "ordinary" man.
>>
>>93388844
Because i'm tired when i get home from work and i want to unwind and spend some time sharing and talking about things i enjoy. I've always liked Elric so why not do that.

He does but you gotta understand the context behind those actions.
He destroyed his own empire out of what he perceived was a mercy killing due to their own decadent ways being beyond repair.
He was destined to end his own world but it was doomed from the start when the cosmic gods decided to make it a battleground. He managed to do the world a favor by riding the next world of the influence the gods of Law and Chaos could have over it. And Stormbringer just kills him because it's a fucking dick.

You'll love Hawkmoon.
Quick synopsis.
Hawkmoon is captured by the evil forces of Granbretan who implant by means of arcane technology (devised by a caste of 'sorcerer-scientists') a sinister black jewel in his skull. He is sent to Kamarg (a future version of the southern French region of Camargue) to perform reconnaissance prior to invasion. The black jewel transmits (and may record) all that Hawkmoon sees to Granbretan's capital, Londra. Temporarily freed from the curse of the jewel by Kamarg's Protector, a grizzled warlord called Count Brass, he falls in love with the Count's daughter, Yisselda, and embarks on a quest to find and implement the will of the Runestaff, a magical item which preserves the Cosmic Balance. During his adventures, he has to collect two more magical items; the Red Amulet held by a mad god somewhere in future Ukraine; and the Sword of the Dawn. Winning many battles in which he is hopelessly outnumbered, but helped by loyal companions, by mysterious allies who arrive in the nick of time, and by dissension, scheming and treachery in the ranks of his foes.

>Shoot, man. I don't mind spoilers. All about the journey to me.
Okay. Strap in.

You need to understand that Elric is only one part of a Cosmic archetype called The Eternal Champion. It's an entity that exists to create stability in the multiverse and prevent everything from collapsing into the void.
Sometimes it fights for Law, sometimes for Chaos and sometimes for the Balance exclusively.
Law and Chaos aren't good and evil. They're ideologies and cosmic forces whose gods range from benevolent, to insane nutjobs.

Stormbringer, is an aspect of a similar entity to The Eternal Champion called The Black Sword bound to almost incarnation of the Champion.

And now. Copy fucking paste

>>93389931
The Multiverse

The Multiverse consists of what is colloquially called "The Million Spheres". Each sphere or plane is a complete dimension in which both men and gods exist.

Interplanar travel is possible. Some races, such as the Vhadagh or Nhadragh can naturally see into and travel between the planes (or at least their "Fifteen Planes"). In some cases, artifacts are necessary to travel the dimensions. The Runestaff, for instance, allows the wielder to travel to any dimension known (cf. "The Vanishing Tower").

Every eternity, an event occurs which is called "The Conjunction of the Million Spheres". This is a time of paradox, when interplanar travel is easier than ever before or after. Old laws are broken and new ones are forged. The nature of space and time are changed. Another Cycle of Events begins. After another eternity, another Conjunction takes place, and so on.

It is in the Cycle previous to the current one that the events of Moorcock's writings take place and that this discourse is concerned with.
The Four Artifacts

After the beginning of the Cycle, smiths alien to the Multiverse created four artifacts. Despite being not of this Multiverse, they served the Lords of Law and humanity. With the first artifact, they sought to fight Chaos with Chaos, much as a fire is fought by creating a back fire. The first artifact is the Two Swords (which on Elric's world were called Mournblade and Stormbringer). But in order to give them the power they needed, the Swords had to be inhabited by a spirit. They struck a bargain with a creature whom we will call the Spirit of the Sword. His power was split between the Two Swords. But one of them was broken, and so he inhabited the remaining one.

he smiths realized the flaw in their belief of using Chaos to fight Chaos. So, they created the Second Artifact, the Runestaff, an instrument of Law. Again, they bargained with a creature, whom they thought was the brother of the Spirit of the Sword. This creature is known as Jehemiah Cohnalias, son of Orland Fank.

Sadly, the smiths did not realize that Jehemiah and the Spirit of the Sword were not brothers, but different aspects of the same being. With the power of the Swords and the Runestaff, this being could wield absolute power over the entire Multiverse (with one exception).

In order to trap the being, the smiths created the Third Artifact, the Black Jewel (which manifested itself in the world of Hawkmoon as the Jewel implanted in Hawkmoon's skull). However, although it could imprison the being's soul, it could not do this for eternity.

Therefore, the smiths created the Fourth Artifact, the most powerful of them all, the Cosmic Balance. A symbol of the necessary Equilibrium between Law and Chaos, it gave power to the Runestaff to produce Order. It could resist the power of the Spirit of the Sword, and therefore became its sworn enemy.
The Effects of the Four Artifacts

Their task completed, the smiths returned to their place of origin. The Four Artifacts worked their power on the entire Multiverse. The Eternal Champion served the Cosmic Balance to preserve Order and Equilibrium. Though numberless, he and his Companion were doomed to constant struggle. They include: Prince Elric of Melnibone and Moonglum of Elwher; Prince Corum Jhaelen Irsei and Jhary-a-Conel; Duke Dorian Hawkmoon von Köln and Oladahn of the Bulgar Mountains; John Daker, alias Erekosë; Earl Aubec of Malador; Urlik Skarsol.

Sometimes the Incarnation of the Champion carried one of the Artifacts: Elric carried Stormbringer, the Black Sword; Hawkmoon bore first the Black Jewel, then the Runestaff. But ever the Cosmic Balance controlled the other three Artifacts, using them to fit its own purpose.

The Conjunction of the Million Spheres

At long last, another Conjunction was about to take place. The Spirit of the Sword, seeking a way to break the Cosmic Balance and escape its eternal prison, took hostages that would persuade two Incarnations of the Champion, Hawkmoon and Erekosë.

In Tanelorn, all met. The Spirit of the Sword needed two things: to have in its possession the Black Jewel so that it could reunite itself with its counterpart in the Runestaff; and then to possess the Incarnation of the Champion who would be willing to wield the Sword for it. For the Spirit could not abide in both the Jewel and the Sword simultaneously, not if it wished to remain whole. And it had to be whole to have enough power to destroy the Balance.

In exchange for the hostages precious to him, his wife Yisselda, and his children Manfred and Yarmila, Hawkmoon surrendered the Jewel. For ironically, the Spirit could only use the Jewel for its purpose if it were surrendered to it willingly.

The Spirit then reunited itself with its counterpart in the Runestaff. Now that it had the Jewel, it sought the Sword. In that form, it could destroy the Balance. But, should it manage to do so, as it had long desired to, it itself would be destroyed unless it had a refuge -- the Jewel. Moreover, while inhabiting the Sword, a manifestation of the Eternal Champion would have to wield the Sword. And thus the second hostage.

Erekosë volunteered to take the Sword in return for the hostage, Ermizhad, his love. The Spirit then inhabited the Sword, leaving the Jewel behind. Controlling Erekosë, the Spirit destroyed the Balance.

The Spirit then inhabited the Jewel. Until Hawkmoon destroyed the Jewel with the Runestaff. Bereft of a refuge in which to survive until the next Cycle, the Spirit of the Sword, Fear, Satan, was rendered powerless. The next Cycle would have no gods.

Tanelorn

Tanelorn alone is present in every plane in the Million Spheres. It is a concept, a city, a refuge. Tanelorn has the power to resist even the power of the Spirit of the Sword. It is a place where men do not need gods. They rely on themselves.

Tanelorn was created by Man. It has always existed, and always shall.

And this is old info. I ain't even touching the shit going on in War Amongst the Angels where so much other shit is involved

He never cared about anyone other than himself.

He later thinks of Guts as the only person who could have distracted him from his desires.

Of course he's selfish. Everything he did, he did to advance his own goals. Even saving Casca was just another step for him to get his own kingdom. He didn't even give a shit about his own body as long as it got him what he wanted.

He never did anything out of altruism. He was always a self centered prick.
Griffith deserved his suffering in the tower. Every moment of it.

Doesn't this mean that anything set in the Elric universe like Hawkmoon automatically has a bad end because of Elric destroying the world?

And does this mean that the cycle is now broken?

pretty sure moorecock wrote it about elric

Nope/ Because it's not a universe. It's a multiverse.

Nah, there will be another cycle. The struggle never truly ends but takes different forms. You just gotta do good in your life.

Huh, but doesn't that mean that people who interact directly with Elric are doomed? Or do they live on an alternate universe?

Elric's universe dies in order for a new one to be made. And yes. Almost everyone he interacts with ends up becoming Stormbringer chow or chaos meat.
But certain friends of his have alternate lives. The soul of his love is the Eternal consort and goes on through the multiverse in various forms.
Moonglum comes back directly to help him out face the spirit of the Eternal Champion and set it free.

Shit's weird yo.

He cared about Guts in his own crazy way. His entire breakdown was jump-started by him being incapable of dealing with actually caring about someone to such a degree. He's a megalomaniac that has to control everyone and everything in his life, and losing control of his emotions sent him into a rapid downwards spiral.

Also Miura spent that whole life review chapter showing us he does in fact think about all the bodies he's stepped over to get where he is, and by his logic, not achieving the goal he got them to die over made would make it all pointless. That and his confused hatred/affection for guts were the strongest motivators for him accepting the bargain. What he actually wants to do with this kingdom shit is unclear; he claims altruistic aims but his methods have been rather devoid of that. Probably that was just more of that ends justify the means logic his life seems to run on. Then there was that vision of the quiet life with Casca, which may indicate he feels SOMETHING for her, or at least feels like he should.

He cares for his companions on some level, but he also cares for power/muh dream much, much more. He is a bad person and deserves whatever horrible end comes to him, but he was not a complete monster before literally becoming a complete monster. Even if he was totally heartless before the eclipse and was just pretending otherwise, it seems even he bought into the lie and tried to make himself into the actual shining knight everyone saw him as and failing with the catastrophic results we see. At several points he risks himself for Guts, which is highlighted as him taking unusual risks. Even when he was crippled and useless he made attempts to help his endangered companions, seemingly not realizing he'd be utterly worthless in that regard.

I really don't get why people are so fixated on simplifying him into a completely heartless villain. The whole reason he's a great villain is because his motivations and morality were complex.

There's no much to tell because there's only one story and a couple poems about him. He's a pictish king during the roman era who becomes enraged after a roman governor crucifies one of his people. He goes to a witch to get his revenge who then helps him summon a race of lovecraftian monsters (I think they're the same snakemen from kull) to bring the governor to him. when they do the governor is completely broken and bran kills him out of mercy

Would you prefer for Miura to go utterly insane and suffer a complete psychological break from writing pure grimdarkness all the time then? The reason why everything has been so light and peppy for a while now is that Miura is literally doing this to preserve his own mental health. The massive hiatus came about specifically because he was genuinely falling ill from writing some of the sick and twisted shit that appeared in the story.
