Spongebob has this innocence to him that nullifies his annoying tendencies. He will clearly be annoying other characters, yet he never sees himself as doing anything wrong, and sometimes earnestly thinks he is helping the current situation.

You could always make the other characters irritating to the audience. That way you're pleased that they are irritated.
