Also the WW Looney Tunes issue seemed super fun but that's all I've looked at.

Hello, Storyteller.

We now return to the adventures of the not-Justice League. Will they succeed in taking over the world? Will they all just end up dying instead? Will Mark Grundelwald ever stop taking the piss? Let's find out!

>>93371597
Thing teaser that everyone thinks is for a "Fantastic 2" book but is clearly going to be the long-awaited return of Marvel Two-in-One.

I feel asleep before the end of last thread but I saw there was some Image bitching and I'm normally there for it, but I actually agree with pro-Image anon that the August solicits look pretty good.

There's more stuff that seems like people trying for things and not just "WHAT IF THING" or "MAKE THIS A MOVIE" plus Mage of course:

imagecomics.com/content/view/image-solicitations-for-august-2017

I also came across this (IMO) hilarious interview that briefly forces you to imagine what Ales Kot must be like IRL - just skip to the end for it:

Legacy is even more shameless of a ripoff of Rebirth than I had imagined.

Fully expecting the "return" at the end to just be Thor, Cap, Tony or Hulk going back to status quo.

No one at Marvel even cares, it's so obvious some executive said "that Rebird thing is getting popular, do one of those" and everyone's just phoning it in.

Like, it's just asking to be made fun of, it borders on parody.
>>
>>93371793
Once Rebirth was success it was kind of inevitable there would be something like it. I just expected Marvel to put more effort in.

You don't really have to be paid to be a shill, retards everywhere are doing it for free. Image just isn't as great as people meme it out to be. It's got the same storytelling sensibilities of big 2, creators continue to write their series because the things they write become really popular because of people's shit taste. Memender actually admitted on a podcast that he would continue writing Deadly Class for the foreseeable future because it's getting a tv adaptation. There's just no creativity in Image books.

>>
>>93372866
Image's problems mostly aren't inherent to Image, except that they mostly take on the same types of books.

I don't see how you can really hate the concept of good creators getting to do stuff entirely controlled and owned by themselves.

Like you said in recent years creator-owned comics have become more and more of just a TV IP farm, but that's hardly a problem just with Image, that's the natural consequence of the big money being in TV. MacFarlane made his crap to sell toys and cartoon rights, for example.

The fu-THAT'S CALLED PRAISING A THING YOU LIKE, YOU FUCKING TROGLODYTE. I fucking joke about it being against the rules to like things on this website, but it's come to the point where a percentage of the user base literally does not understand that sometimes people enjoy things and like to speak positively about it. Image is very much part of the problem. They'll sell garbage series as long as they are making their money back. Not only that but they encourage creators to write for TV/movie pitches and write for as long as they want. This isn't necessarily the worst thing and creators are definitely looking for this but this is exactly what lead to the stagnation and downward spiral of slShonen Jump. And there's definitely stagnation in image, both creatively and financially. Shonen Jump recently realized this problem and are adapting, hopefully Image does too.

That, but mostly it was because Marvel stepped in and made him change some art for a Spider-Man issue, so he quit the title. If the Image thing had not worked he would've just gone to DC. At least that's what Liefeld said the back up plan was if Image failed.

>what lead to the stagnation and downward spiral of slShonen Jump
Or Vertigo. Graham complains that the wave of former Marvel writers takes up too much of the company and just makes Image Vertigo 2.0

I mean Remender is writing 4 different books right now, but because like a lot of writers his bag of tricks isn't too deep reading more than 1 is kind of a waste.

Ah, fork, missed most of storytime.

Was anything worth actually reading today? I still have like a dozen open tabs from last week.
>>
>>93373161
Yeah, Remender has like 4 Image books, Hickman has 2 and third on the way, Kelly Sue has 2 or three and so does Rucka. I'm sure there are a few other writers who have more than 2 books. I know it's a business model and you allow all the famous writers to write as much as they want but it isn't doing any favors for you creatively. At least Lemire doesn't put all his eggs in one basket.

No honor amongst supervillains...
>>
The Lobo/Road Runner comic was kind of disappointing, way too much set up, but the jokes were great. I mean Lobo is the perfect DC character for slapstick antics
>>
Why do so many Image books feel like they were written and drawn by the same guy, with so many premises that don't feel very different from each? Is it because a lot of the ex-big two creatives are still just doing a lot of the same stuff they were already doing at the big two?

Besides the social isolation likely to make their kids supervillains?

>Hickman has 2 and third on the way
Manhattan Projects may be coming back too, the artist posted what looked like Oppenheimer on Twitter. Unless it was a commission and he's a cruel tease.

Yeah Lemire's work is varied. He as his cape book Black Hammer at Dark Horse, Descender which is one of the better big SciFi comics at Image, that OGN Roughneck just came out, and the comic with Snyder I forget the name of.
>>
>>93373255
Eh, not EVERYONE is doing stuff solely for the possible TV options. I'm sure they know there's a lot of money in creator-owned whether you get optioned or not, but I still think most of their stuff comes from a creative spark somewhere.

The main problem with Image itself is it gets a little wanky with its focus on creators that have already made a pretty big name for themselves at the Big Two. But every publisher is a business at the end of the day and has to carve out their niche.

I'll disagree there. They've got a great list of artists working on books at Image, probably the best list of artistic talent from any mainstream publisher.

Under arm, pretty boring name.
>>
>>93373295
High-concepts are not hard to do, so if you're creating a book you can pretty easily come up with "it's x but with y!" to get people buying the first trade. The story doesn't matter all that much because if stuff gets bought for TV or a movie it's because they want the concept not the story itself.

Honestly I feel the same way about most modern TV, it all feels very samey with some sort of high-concept to get you watching and then generic drama with lots of plot twists and cliffhangers.
>>
>>93373349
Thanks for posting as always, Storyteller.

Even stories published by other companies aren't immune to SM/WW shipping. Goddammit.
>>
>>93373373
Maybe, it just feels like most of the ones I've seen have similar art styles. Maybe it's just an effect from how a few of them immigrated from Marvel and DC.

Dammit OP.

>I'm sure they know there's a lot of money in creator-owned whether you get optioned or not
Not really. Remender mentioned that he's still in the hole with most of his old stuff at Image. People really like to overlook the countless Image stuff that gets canceled because the creative team just can't keep dumping money in new issues because they aren't making enough money off them.
>>
>>93373343
>and the comic with Snyder I forget the name of.
After Death, it was pretty fucking great.
>>93373345
>The main problem with Image itself is it gets a little wanky with its focus on creators that have already made a pretty big name for themselves at the Big Two.
This is my problem with them, too many of the same writers writing too much of the samey material. Compare this to Fantagraphics or European anthologies and you'd see the difference. No abundance of same creators with same style.
>>
>>93373407
But isn't this taking the piss out of it? Shit, Dick!Hyperion even uses the Woman of Kleenex justification.
>>
>>93373408

Ah yeah, thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that's a major part of it. Way too many with similar color schemes.
>>
>>93373345
>Eh, not EVERYONE is doing stuff solely for the possible TV options.
I feel like you are kind of wrong there. Big creators can afford to have books running long time and still be profitable but small creators need that extra money because they're losing money a lot of the time or barely making a profit.
>>
>>93373437
>European anthologies

I think that our reading choices here for the last year or so has shown that for all the technological changes things have gone through, there is a very real level of cultural stagnation since the at least the 1980s.

I mean, fuck, Foolkiller could have been printed LAST YEAR and the only thing you'd need to change was how his interaction with the internet worked.

http://www.cbr.com/image-publisher-argues-independent-comics-as-movie-pitches-arent-a-bad-thing/
It's a very old interview but this sentiment is still very much at the core of Image even to this day. He has said about this recently as well a lot of the times, if Image really wants to compete with big 2 it needs a lot of Walking Deads.
>>
>>93373619
Oh yeah, Eric Stephenson is kind of an idiot.

I still don't understand these threads hate-boner for Image desu

>>
>>93373644
We are all capeshitters.
I think we are definitely all a bit jaded and kind of hipsterish here, so we like to point out at the flaws of popular things and laugh. People do this with big 2 as well, also hate the capeshit movies and the normalfag audience. Personally though, all the criticism here for Image and other popular stuff feel totally valid. [/spoiler
>>
>>93373708
Oh, yeah, John is clearly the better Buscema.

Sal is... competent. But age did his drawing skills no favour, because his work in the last decade and a half or so was not great.
>>
>>93373736
It's biased as fuck, most people shitting on Image here feel like bitter shits that are /totally/ not jealous of those stinky Image writers who got their ideas published instead of them and therefore are sellouts and hacks.
