Lucy always cared about her friends, but was always wrought with so much insecurity and trust issues that she hid behind Mike and the "don't need no one" shtick, and only showed that supportive side to her pets.

One of the few things I looked forward to with Lucy coming back was her showing some signs of maturity like this.
