If anything the next step putting in the work to properly build up a Sinister Six film, something which Sony already tried and utterly failed to do last time. It's a classic Spider-Man kind of story, and that's what you do as with a young Peter Parker if you want to elevate the stakes. Make all of his choices as Spider-Man come back to bite him in the ass hard when all of the criminals he's put away come together to defeat their common enemy, and make it so that he has to question if his heroism isn't going to make things worse for people (especially himself) in the long run. It'd be a good way to cap off their planned trilogy.

Even then though, assuming they don't go that direction, there are dozens of more interesting storylines in the comics that they could (and should) adapt before even considering Venom.
