The smart thing to have done is pretend to just so happen to be doing some superheroing in the area, let one of the kids come to his aid while feigning defeat, befriend them and then slowly use charm to guarantee their natural allegiance later.

If you read and watch The Walking Dead you'll notice they got rid of every black man/white woman relationship that was in the comic when they adapted it into the show. Anyway, Conquest appeared to be one of the oldest surviving Viltrumites. If we assume that their aging process parallels a human's, but at a drastically slower rate, that fucker was pretty much ancient compared to the other survivors except perhaps Thadeus. He may have been too set in his ways.

They were a society where they literally culled the weak as a matter of habit. They had these things within themselves the whole time, but to show it would likely be a death sentence. Now they're in a situation where they can finally let it out. It turns out that it's pretty fuckin' great, and they're all good with it.

Conquest, being so old, would probably be too long immersed in glorious Viltrumite culture to be softened up by it. As for Thragg, I think he's genuinely a terrible person by nature, rather than nurture. He had his chance to go home and be a family man, but instead he's throwing his children into a blender.

Although I do love the idea of Conquest being an affable grandpa figure to the Viltrumite halfbreeds on Earth.

And then he loses his empire to the traitors who 1) made the scourge virus that decimated his people, 2) one of their greatest heroes who very defected to the coalitions side, plus his son, and 3) who then literally blew up their entire planet and pretty much wiped off the empire from the galactic map. Plus all the while everyone under his rule decided to give a big fuck you to the old ways of the imperium too, due to the influence of living on Earth.

He is a guy who fought as hard as possible and then had the rug pulled under him in every way. The only thing he has left is vengeance, and it clouded his mind. Plus he has to bone thousands of bug women to rebuild, and we don't know if that's any pleasurable or not.
