This is a good reason for a new Thor. Not cancer that someone refuses to cure, not trying to drive up sales. Give a character a sensible reason to be in a new role and people will read it. It doesn't even have to last forever, it can be interesting and fun.

What price? The Asgardians aren't lying to her. The cure may not work perfectly? It's the same with modern-day cancer treatment, she loses nothing in the attempt. Does she think she'll get cursed or ensorcelled? She has how many people including Thor who would try to help her if that was the case? She's choosing to suicide and hurt her friends instead of trusting them in an attempt to stay alive (or it is just bad writing), and that just annoys me.

In all seriousness, after Jean's death in the Morrison run, and subsequent upgrade of concept, "The White Phoenix" version of "Jean" made a few cameos in Marvel's god-themed stories where large collections of deities were congregating.
I'm not 100% on it, but I think she was a witness to the ceremony where Ares introduced Phobos to the rest of Marvel's god cast as a fellow full-fledged god.

So yeah, there were opportunities for those two to "mingle".

Or just send in some nanomachines to do it. Using chemotherapy in Marvel's universe is just barbaric.

I can understand her not trusting magic cures given her negative experiences with magic and consequential obligations/damnations, and something like nanotech, teleportation, or any other mad science would be cost-prohibitive...

At this point the only excuses are either some pig-headed ethical stance about wanting no special treatment, or she's become addicted to the hammer and being a god.

If I lived in the Marvel universe I would worship the Phoenix. There should be some Cult or Church based around it on earth, popular among muties.

Another possibility is that another Phoenix from Secret Wars has survived. There were more than 1 Phoenix there (there were from many universes).
Cyclops died with the 616 Phoenix, killed by Doom, but Rachel was a governor of one of those Battleworld States as a Phoenix Host with Phoenix as Codename. IIRC the tie in book was called Xtinction Agenda.

Storm also technically worships the phoenix since the "Bright Lady" she worships is actually a time traveled Rachel Grey that she met as a child.
