I liked his character arc as well, tragic as it might have been. The whole idea of a character being sympathetically racist is an intriguing one. It was portrayed as a negative quality, but he was still willing to work with and even help those he thought of as an inferior race. It made him appear noble in a way.
The whole thing about him being unable to raise a hand against those he saw as superior, even when it bit him in the ass, also helped with that weird nobleness.

For a long, long time I would rank my three favourite HS characters as Karkat, then Equius, then John. By the time we neared the end of the story and it was becoming clear that Karkat was irrelevant to the plot and had been for some time, it became impossible to remain emotionally invested in him. He was a sad, pointless tag-along just grumbling nearby while more-important characters were doing more-important things.

The fact that at that same point Equius was swiftly and most unexpectedly becoming one of the really important characters (and got probably the final truly great and hilarious scenes of the entire story) made it clear that he deserved that top spot.

The implication of the whole black/red vacillation thing was that trolls were just so fucking weird that hate could turn to love on a fucking dime because they're aliens and they don't have the same emotions as humans do. Her hatred became love, at least in that moment.

But then Hussie never really felt like doing anything with it again and sank that ship with cruel abandon the one time we saw them interact again later (aside from Equius's harem of ghost robot Aradias in the dreambubbles).

I do not wish to harangue about the billions of 'wasted potential's and whatnot (that had been done enough times), but yes his internal conflict about hemocaste ideals and how his friends fit into it was really interesting.

It could've been definitely built upon, at least to get just a few more scraps of trull culture out there (even if hussie dislikes worldbuilding, which boggles my fuckin mind to this day); and not just "D --> Welp I'm no longer above anybody and I never was!". Oh well.

Equius/Feferi.

He would have been dotingly, worshipfully solicitous towards her in a way that I think she would have found herself entitled to; she always seemed a bit snobbish to me. They were both STRONG, which he would have respected, and made physical affection between them realistically viable. She would have ordered him to tone down his more overt weirdness and he would have done his best to comply, and I think she would have found his occasional breaches and slip-ups endearingly funny and silly.

I think it would have been entertaining.

Funny how the tactical midget who was shouting about being the leader all the time just fell in the background and stayed there without any input to give.

Meanwhile the designated joke gets to be on the last page that's considered to be the best moment in HS (according to huss), is part of the big bad, takes a very important role in the final fight, can do whatever he wants (being a sprite and all) and reunites with his best bro/platonic partner in the most spectacular way, on a separate flash page DEDICATED to him and his friend.

You know getting to that point from "(paraphrasing here) if you expected equius to have an arc you're a fucking dumbass" is quite something.

I've seen a lot of people mention sol and aradia getting really lucky and all, but I don't think that's true.

If you look at the troll team you can clearly see who are important and who are throwaways. The red team is full of em (kar, tz, gamzee, vriska, kanaya) and tavros gets to have a separate arc as well. Meanwhile the blue team is nothing but jokes, one-offs and non-characters. Eri and Fef really were just extras. Nothing more. I think that's apparent. Eq and Nep were the stereotypical 'two guys'; never apart often played for jokes. And finally sol and ara were the one-offs, whom after doing 1 thing per allotted time disappear from the comic for a while.

I'd argue that Eq's and Nep's journey were better than the rest of the blue team's because, they've risen from the second lowest category of troll characters (in a meta sense) and have become semi supporting characters like the red team. Even if just towards the end.

Boohoo vriska mindwashed sol to kill his sweetheart oh fuck off with your crocodile tears. After that initial squabble with the FLARP teams they had the easiest fuckin mary-sue tinted ride throughout the rest of the comic. You don't know jack shit about pain.

We did not get to see Equius after Seek the Highblood for a fuckin year. SEEK THE HIGHBLOOD! Everyone STILL references that flash as the scariest shit in HS. EVERYONE was ridiculing equius fans, daoots and all.

But then BAM like a majestic fuckin winged horse hatching from a phoenix egg, he returned. Not to mention he was sanctified as pretty cool by the appointed jesus of the comic, Vriska.

Too bad at that point I was way past giving a fuck about the comic, but this last gesture was nice from Huss I suppose. Or anybody else on the 'inner circle'.

I have left behind everything related to HS. Except for my love of Equius.

It definitely would've been entertaining at least. Hemocaste drama is pretty cool and would've given us more worldbuilding. Also would've helped her be an actual character instead of just a wasted oppurtinity. Like many many others. But we can always find "what could have been"s.
