Whats the most sad cartoon episode?

When courage lost his parents
My mom died when I was 5 years old so it was just me and my dad. He devoted himself to raising me and made sure I had a great childhood despite it. He was always there for me, the man sacrificed so much for me. When I started college he started doing weird things like forgetting appointments and putting his car keys in the fridge. He'd laugh it off as "senior moment" even though he was still in his 50s.
He almost missed my graduation because he had a hard time finding my university even though he'd been there many times. Still he said it was the proudest moment of his life. A few months later I'm over for my usual Sunday dinner with him and he tells me he's been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. It hits him very aggressively. In less than two years he's hospitalized. Then I watch him relive my mom's death like it's a fresh wound when he's told she died years ago and when he asks for his little boy I see the fear and confusion on his face when I tell him I'm his son. Eventually I stop telling him. I'm just a stranger that comes to visit a confused and terrified man.
It was a mercy when he finally died, 2 weeks shy of his 59th birthday.
Couple of years later I'm up late watching Cartoon Network and working on a work project. Adventure Time is on. I've never really watched it before but I hear it's a goofy, quirky kid's cartoon that's light and funny.
It was the episode with that fucking song.
I fucking bawled like a baby, raw fucking ugly crying. It was like my heart was ripped right out of my chest. No cartoon, movie, tv show, book has ever made me cry that hard.
>>93356145
Not that one
they way they did Pearl's crying came off dumb and cringey, like how overly stupid they made it seem

>>93356780
Im sorry anon. Alzheimer's is no fucking joke. Its the most evil disease on earth imo. It slowly and systematically takes away pieces of who you were. You are a very strong son for staying with him to the end, even if he didnt remember you...
Fuck now im all emotional. I hate Alzheimer's.
>>93356431
There are even more sad episodes in that series but Reddit goes nuts over Jurassic Bark.
Last of the star makers has to be up there.
>>93356431
Not even the saddest Futurama episode.
>>93357124
What happened? They kill off a character or something?
>>93356780
Dude... my condolences
>>93357706
Not just Reddit, it's a pretty mainstream opinion because it's an episode that aired when the show was still popular.
>>93357124
That was not so much sad as bittersweet.
Still had me crying like a little bitch
>>93357939
Well they removed pretty much the last bit of doubt of apple parents being dead but the episode was a romeo and Juliet thing. Nobody died in it. Just an old man having to live with the regret of disowning his own daughter over stupid shit and having the realization of what he did not come until after she had been gone for years.
>>93356807
>I't's dumb, I cringed and it's stupid.
Like, I'm not denying there could be criticisms of that scene, but what exactly are yours?
>>93356807
It's the only scene from Steven Universe that make me cry. It hit too close to home. Losing someone you love and being left behind hurts.
The show has lost a lot of what made it good, but that scene was one of its highest points.
>>93356780
>Eventually I stop telling him. I'm just a stranger that comes to visit a confused and terrified man.
>>93356145
So jealous that Steven got to wrap his arms around Pearl like that.
>>93356145
>>93358414
>"EverythingI everdid, Ididforher."
>"Now she's gone,butI'm still here."
The hug after actually gets to me on a deep level. Being left behind, though death or separation, is something I've been through. Maybe seeing things through rose-colored glasses is how we get through it, but when it comes to light that things weren't always what they seemed it really shatters your worldview.
Also another one that gets me:
>"Can't you talk to me just once like a real person?!"
>"...but I'm not...a real person..."
>>93358414
Same here. The ending montage with this track playing is the most poignant moment in the show by far.

>>93358313
I'm saying the expressions and delivery of her crying, especially the part in the OP, is dumb, like in a weird dramatic way that's hard to explain.
I get it was dramatic but it felt weirder than just a sad crying scene.
Like those slowmo impact things like when Lars died, how floaty and slow it was to have an intense effect, it's stupid but I can't explain it
you either get it or you don't, 2 different opinions
>>93359056
The right term is hamfisted. That's what SU is when it tries to do drama.
>>93356145
>Pic related
>You bubbled me away and didn't ever tell your friends... My friends...
Fucking great delivery!
>>93356780
Amazing scene in the cartoon (and that's a very touching personal experience you shared). Love how music is the main part of the story AND compliments the atmosphere so well.
>>93357934
This is an incredible heart-clenching moment. I mean when the realization hits, it's just overwhelming.

>>93359241
Bismuth is still my favourite episode.
It really did a great job of showing how nothing was black and white.
People to this day argue about how was in the right Rose/Steven or Bismuth.
You know a cartoon did something right when something like that happens.

Jesus christ, that episode was fucking rough.
>>93356532
Courage had a hard life.
The ending of Leela's Homeworld made me cry.
They gave her up but still watched over her.
>>93358733
>>93359750
I only like the episode because for the first time Steven wasn't able to pep talk his way out of a situation.
And it's led to more moment where he can't pull his pacifist bullshit anymore and that's a great thing for the show's dynamic.

I was reading a green text really early on in the shows life on /co/ about all of the Crystal Gems dying and singing their respective parts of the theme song as they were shattered.
I was hanging out with my Grandma at that point, and I started thinking about how she'll be gone soon, and I'll still be here. I don't cry that often but I had to get up and go into the bathroom because I got really sad out of nowhere.
Three months later she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died a few days after the diagnosis. I was the oldest grandkid, and she loved me so much, and we would watch disney movies together almost every weekend.
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss her, or wish that she was here to see some of the accomplishments I'm doing.
It's the unexpected feels that hurt the most, /co/.

;-;
>>93365031
That's because I can't find the right term.
I just watched it casually before I knew what kind of shit it was, and by "you either get it or you don't" it's just you either have the mindset to understand where I'm coming from or you don't, example being telling a fan it's shitty and them saying that's impossible.
Anyway, I'm trying to figure out the term for this shit, the cringe dramatic type stuff. I can't find the exact example I want, where Rose's face appears in the sky, but the specific part was how it bounced, like the bounce specifically. It's the same kind of thing that makes me annoyed when Pearl made that expression in the OP
>>93357934
Jurassic bark makes me tear up, this one makes me cry
>>93365400
interesting that you mention that Mindful Education example, since it was done by a guest boarder
but yeah, generally its just always going to be really down to the individual whether a dramatic moment lands or not - you can talk about specific technical elements but its never going to be a completely objective thing

BACK IN THE '90s
I WAS IN A VERY FAMOUS TEEEEEEEEEEVEEEEEEEEEEEE SHOOOW
>>93374622
The two songs are really the same disease from two different perspectives.
"Nuts" is a child caregiver who is tired and frustrated caring for an ailing parent, but they still love their parent and know it's not their fault and they live for the tiny, fleeting moments of lucidity where they get to make contact with the parent that was.
"When I Don't Remember You" is the parent when they feel their lucidity slipping away and they and they know what fate has in store for them and they're telling their child to please forgive them for whatever they might do or say when they're no longer themselves.
I had a friend who died of Alzheimer's in her mid 40s. The saddest part was before she got sick she had a big fight with her teenage son and he left the house and moved to another city (he was only 17). By the time they tracked him down and told him what had happened she no longer recognized him. He'd forgiven her because he realized that her behaviour that led to their falling out was actually caused by the dementia of the disease setting in. But she didn't know he was her son anymore. To her her son was still a little boy. She died in less than a year after she was diagnosed.
At the end she didn't recognize her husband anymore and she didn't remember even having children. When her husband would visit she'd ask him why her father wouldn't come and get her (he father had died over a decade earlier when her kids were very little). He found it was less upsetting to just tell her that her father sent him there to see if she was okay and needed anything and that her father would come for her very soon.
Apparently the younger you are when you get it, the more aggressively it attacks you so she didn't have to suffer with it for very long. My aunt got it in her 80s and just lingered for years in a state of dementia and terror.
Diseases of the brain have got to be the scariest way to die, because they kill who you are before they kill your body.
>>93356780
I feel like I've seen this before; not the exact story but another story that connected it to Alzheimers.
Never understood why people really linked them until stuff like this began to pop up. Makes it kind of worse how joking with IK then on becomes tragic comedy or just sad.

This episode is why I can't fully hate Eustace. He's a massive fucking jerk to be sure, but considering how his life played out it's hard to judge him, considering his entire family treated him like shit and nobody but Muriel ever seemed to care about him.
I mean hell, the reason Eustace hates Courage so much is because he thinks Muriel loves Courage more than him (which given the way they interact might be true)

My condolences bro
My Grandma had that: it's terryfing what that disease does to your mind. She was very smart, and did her best in order that my uncle and my father spoke correctly our language, without the typical accent of the place my family comes from. When Alzheimer kicked in, her mind rapidly started to become more and more childlike. She started to speak with the accent(probabily like how when she was very young) and than after like two years, she was only capable of gibberish like a toddler. The "funny" thing is that the last time I saw her it was like a year before she died: I don't want to know how she behavied in her last days...

That was kind of the point. Nuclear war is fucking godawful and terrifying. A lot of people (myself included) now have had the luxury of living in a post-Cold-War era where we aren't under constant fear of nuclear war.
