Jurgens and Tomasi were very "play it safe" choices for Rebirth, and with New 52 Superman being a huge five year clusterfuck, I'm sure that was by design.

They didn't need to reinvent the wheel, they just needed to tell consistently good stories to get Superman back to a solid status quo that readers would want to stick around for, which they've done very well IMO.

The Black Hand had been manipulating his life and fucking with his subconscious for quite some time, and they attacked not long after Damian showed up. The whole Ra's nonsense was shoved in there as well. Then Final Crisis happened and Bruce died. Also Talia had specifically forced Damian into Bruce's life just to sow chaos.

Absolutely beautiful sequence that fully encapsulates the hopeful, bright, loving feeling that this run has had so far. Sure there haven't been many HUGE earth-shattering challenges, but it's all the more refreshing because of that. It's a story of a genuinely happy family supporting each other and growing together. There has been some really subtle development going on for everyone which is fantastic. It's not perfect but I'm glad I've read every issue of this year long run so far.

I wish the Super-Elite weren't just jobbers and they actually fleshed out their powers and purposes. This book is weird about glancing over the action parts. It sets up big action sequences that don't really live up to it's own climatic hype.

I love the art and Jon and the family and all that. I'm not completely hating. I just feel like we could get so much more out of this story we aren't getting.
