She was generally insecure because of a history of dating scumbags and thinking that Marten would either cheat on her or leave her for Faye, who he had been pining for since the start of the strip. That "girl with a penis" strip was just one in a long line of insecure moments for her.

The shameful thing the characters are referring to is from after Dora broke up with Marten. He started going to this other bakery/coffee shop that had Padma, who was basically indian Dora, and Renee, who was basically black Faye. She revealed that she would have to move out to another state because her grandmother was doing poorly, and cognizant of that they still started a relationship. Marten was dreading the split and really didn't know how to deal with that sort of temporary thing because he really liked her (she liked him too, she got a similar sad expression thinking about having to move away), but ignored the time limit and tried to just enjoy the relationship. She extended her stay a little longer, and Marten might've convinced himself that it would become more permanent. but then Padma eventually had to leave as planned.

The shameful thing, is that when Padma called Marten to have a date/talk before she had to leave so they could come to some sort of closure, Marten lied and said he was too busy or tired to meet with her. Padma ended up leaving without the two ever saying goodbye. The idea is that it's shameful because despite all the cards being on the table from the start, and them both genuinely liking each other, he decided to withdraw at the last moment. And in doing that he almost punished her for her circumstances, despite them being out of her control and him knowing them upfront and still pursuing her.

I think it would work fine as a mistake he beat himself up for, but Faye, space station soldier girl and now Renée have called him out over it.

The main issue with Dora is that no one calls her out on her shitty, toxic behavior other than a light chiding and her insecurity should have made her relationship with Tai crash and burn pretty quickly.

I think the reason why everyone got so invested in the Trappening was because Marten had to be an active participant in the plot. It's also why the emotional high point of the story was Marten asking Claire out. It was a story of his personal agency; he wasn't being setup by his friends, he wasn't the one getting asked out, it was Marten saying "I want this, and I will pursue it."

And you're right. Tai and Dora should have erupted pretty quickly. That said, I'd buy into the relationship lasting if I ever saw them getting into fights and working out their problems, but Jeph skips all the most interesting scenes. Like with this week's mess. A more interesting decision would have let Marten sit there a bit while Claire pried into his past with the black chick. Or hell, it's a visual medium with a more or less objective camera, let Marten walk away and give us a chance at dramatic irony by letting us see the conversation. Likewise, Tai and Dora seem like an unrealistic pairing because we only know that one sleeps around and one has deep insecurities. It shouldn't work, and the fact that it does signals a huge misstep in what information we get to see.
