Toonami is having an AoT rerun marathon on July 1st even though the 4th is on fucking Tuesday.

Adult Swim is funding two new 6 episode seasons of FLCL. Expected release 2018.

Last week, ratings went up ever so slightly but were still in the gutter. This week we finally have the ratings black hole known as Unicorn off the block, and now we have an even bigger black hole known as Lupin which got embarrassed by Naruto. Everything else was pretty much the same, only big gain of note was Tokyo Ghoul

11:00 Samurai Jack 1085 0.49 631
11:30 Dragon Ball Super (r) 984 0.44 569
12:00a Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters 944 0.44 560
12:30a Attack on Titan 776 0.34 441
1:00a Tokyo Ghoul 711 0.32 413

1:30a Hunter X Hunter 650 0.29 372
2:00a Lupin the 3rd: Part 4 545 0.24 304
2:30a Naruto: Shippuden 588 0.26 330

Your meme animes couldn't keep the Toonami bubble for long, and finally, it will be soon time for THE FINAL DELETION.

I'm really sad and sorry for everyone who believed in Toonami lasting longer than 8 years, though.
>>
>>93342961
Why does anyone still care about this all-but-anime-only block? It produces essentially nothing of its own since after SJ, just let it die already.

This isn't the early 2000s, when you needed it to watch anime.
>>
>>93343168
Probably both, it's way too different from HxH and Naruto to be between them, just as Unicorn was. Also it's probably another example of a memetitle a handful of people begged for that the masses don't care about
>>
>>93343129
>What happened all of a sudden?
More people started using sites like Crunchyroll for their anime fix instead.

But hey, its Space Dandy and Attack on Titan days were pretty cool
>>
Sorry, kind of naive to this stuff, but is Toonami actually going to be cancelled again if the ratings are shit? Has this been stated somewhere or is it just speculation?
>>
>>93343419
You don't need confirmation to know if something gets bad ratings that it will be cancelled.

That aside, last time ratings were this bad half the block was chopped off, so we know what happens when ratings dip

Picking edgy bullshit like Ghoul and SNKs2 was a bad idea. People can watch that anywhere. Jack was a good gamble but failed in a way because it felt rushed. We need something special to keep this block alive. I kinda hope Dandy nets the rerun spot when GiTS is done. They paid all that money for it,why not show it again.

I would assume it's TMS's fault. Discotek is just a distributor and Demarco probably had no idea there were multiple versions of this show when he got it (in his defense, the existence of the Italian OST is not well documented). TMS is the one footing the bill for the dub and they're the ones who sent the dubbing studio the materials.

>>
>>93349682
Not him, but I thought it would appeal to the western audience.
>>
>>93350390
Lots of different things can appeal to the "western audience". But it depends on which western audience. Toonami's audience isn't really interested in a comedy series from the 70s even if its done up in an incredible style with gorgeous animation. Toonami's audience are a mix of nostalgiafag 90s kids and scene hipsters from tumblr who obsess over the latest fad anime and then drop it like garbage as soon as the next title comes along. It's rare to find a show that appeals to both demographics equally.
>>

>>93343052
It's too bad they threw the show away before Saobaody. But it's a good thing they did it before Impel Down. The One Piece anime would definitely become a ratings sink. I'm surprised Funimation still wants to dub it.

>>
>>93351718

Now it gets interesting. Barring TG and Root A, their small block, while stale is better than half of the stuff we have now.

Maybe it'll be three months before it drops or alternatively, Demarco gets a fire under his ass and he stops slacking off.

You should want it to do good.

So what's the brilliant explanation for Jack reruns suddenly not being ratings poison anymore?
>>
>>93352108
its on after family guy

like dragon ball used to be
>>
>>93343419
Toonami won't be "cancelled" for at least a year and a half. Fooly Twoly is the block's next big exclusive and one of the highlights from this year's Momocon panel was that [as] was happy with how Jack did and wants to do more original programming for the block.
>>
>>93352017

>>93352077
>>93352032

>>93352108

>>
>>93343031
He's been railing on "Samurai Meme" for some time now, so he probably will until the reruns stop
>>
>>93352224
He'd have to have pre-screened both the sub and the dub. As mentioned before, the fact that the international dubs of Lupin Part 4 got a different OST is not really documented everywhere. Unless he had watched the episode in both languages, there was no way of knowing.
>>
>>93343419

"Ratings" is just a smokescreen. A fucking cartoon channel doesn't give a shit about ratings. Things get pulled when somebody behind the scenes personally doesn't like a show.
>>
... ok looking at this weeks AoT promo, they are going to fuse arnt they? Eren does not have legs, and Amari or whatever her name is has no arms.
>>
>>93347462
> not a fit for the block

Why not? Black Lagoon and Michiko&Hatchin made the block. Modern gunplay series are a pretty solid niche in anime.
>>
>>93352384
I think his point was more that it's a fun comedy with occasional action over something with a serious plot and story. Which still leaves argument holes
>>
>>93351718
How can Tokyo Ghoul air on two channels at the same time? Aren't these deals usually exclusive?

>>93351718

>>
>>93353758
I don't know. Maybe the rights lapsed. But that would be odd, seeing as they were airing the new uncut HD version for 4 episodes a few years ago before the block got cut short.
>>
>>93353758
I think it's just Funimation trying to prepare in case Toonami and/or [AS] goes under.

That or they want to expand their presence on television some more. Honestly, who knows?
>>
>>93349643
And given the comedy reruns before and after come off of or help establiish the ratings for Toonami, would it be wise for [AS] just to can those if they can Toonami?

There's only so much Family Guy, KoTH and R&M one can take before people begin dropping it like they do the non DB portions of Toonami itself.

They certainly care if people are watching their block or not. Ratings matter in terms of where a channel would best position themselves to go in the future. From the looks of toonami's ratings, the future of CN may not include the block for much longer.

If it was good recent stuff that might not be so bad. I actually wouldn't mind MHA replacing Super at 8 or Jack at 11. The problem is that most of the recent pickups have been trash. who the hell thought Ghoul and AoT after an almost 4 year break would be good pickups?

No. The pain arc is considered the best of Shitpudding and aside from some really good moments, it's still just okay. It's all downhill after this arc and we still have 6 1/2 years of Nardo left to go, assuming the block survives that long.
>>
What was the thought process in starting with Lupin III Pt. 4? Did they expect us to know who all these characters are and the relationships they have with each other?

Also do people actually like AoT? I watched half of season 1 and it was the most Mary/Gary Sue shit I'd seen in a long time.

I got a feeling that Toonami will replace Shippuden with Boruto by the end of the year
>>
>>93360584
Lupin is a very episodic series, even this one where there is some slight sense of continuity between the episodes. Most episodes of the series you can follow along as long as you know the basics of who the main 5 characters are, what they're like and how they play off of each other.
>>
>>93360625
Boruto is only 12 episodes in right now and Shippuden isn't even finished being dubbed.

>Shit like Family Guy is made specifically with frequent reruns in mind.

But even factoring that, people (unless they're clinically retarded) will get tired of seeing the antics of BETER GRIFFITH and his pals.

Hell, R&M wasn't made for rerun potential with its current run of 26 episodes, yet [AS] is whoring it out until it's dead in the ground.

Point is, people will eventually get tired of the same things over and over again, doesn't matter if it's Jashi or the antics of a retarded dad.
>>
>>93352224

>>93369700
> people (unless they're clinically retarded) will get tired of seeing the antics of BETER GRIFFITH and his pals.
You say that, but look at the ratings of the reruns before the start of Toonami.
>>
>>93369700
Family Guy has been the highest rated thing on AS pretty much since the day they got it. And it's been on the air nonstop too. It's never going to lose its drawing power because it's designed to be background noise. Jack and anime is not, which is why whenever they put reruns on it's a disaster
>>
>>93365626
The best toonami shows are ones that are easy to make fun of. If I wanted to watch a show seriously I would watch it on my own time
>>
>>93369701
>be the faggit in charge of buying shows for your dying block
>it's not MY responsibility to see if they sent the right shit

How many times has this happened? Multiple times with KLK post credits, that short that was supposed to air with subs but just got cut instead, the entirety of GXP, probably more. Demarco's only job is to make sure the crap he puts on is right, and he can't even do that
>>
>>93369862

You would think of all people, Demarco would be the person who remembers what this block was really for. It introduced new viewers to stuff they may not have given a chance. It never was the nostalgia and popular show block, and that's why it's dying. Robutt was in a shitty show, but no one knew it was shit without watching it. It's just too easy to skip everything now.
>haha remember Gundam here it is again!

If people genuinely wanted to watch anime they would do so via Crunchyroll or Hulu or whatever they have. Why would they watch stuff that came out years ago at the rate of one episode at a time?

The only real way to try and reach out is to do normalfag shows, because they probably don't watch a lot so they just tune in for Dragonball and maybe stay for something else.

The whole "anime on TV" model in general is destined to fizzle out anyway and nobody can stop it. It's inevitable. No amount of Demarco money laundering or autismo 4chan armchair quarterbacking will make a difference
>>
>>93370973
Why did it work 2012-mid 2016? Streaming was just as prevalent then and Toonami was doing amazing
>>
>>93369117
She can't do the voice anymore. Supposedly she did record an episode of Kai, but the recording went so poorly that they agreed it was best to replace her.
>>
>>93361835
By the "end of the year" Boruto will have only like 30 or so episodes and still won't have a dub.
>>
>>93351718
>Vice

Well let's see, might be interesting to have Faye Valentine and a obese black woman with a huge afro.
>>
>>93371298
People watch Toonami for more than one reason. There's nostalgia appeal, and then there's novelty. You can broadly categorize viewers by which of the two appeals they care most about. Nostalgiafags mainly only watch for a nostalgiafix, and the noveltyfags only care about whatever is popular, they're fad-chasers, scene hipsters, whatever you want to call them. You can also maybe generalize by age. The younger audience will care more about newer shows since they are too young to remember most of Toonami and so don't have nostalgia for most of its old shows (DBZ being the exception due to its ubiquitous exposure), and so they're more into the fad shows that Toonami picks up. While older viewers are probably more in the nostalgiafag camp since they are old enough to remember Toonami all the way back to the 90s maybe.
>>
>>93351718
>airing both Tokyo Ghoul and its sequel at the same time
Seems dumb. Their lineup though is a lot more robust than Chiller's, but without Toonami's branding I don't expect this to survive.

>>
>>93369839

>>93369819

But see, I don't consider R&M designed for background noise either, and the fact that they're pretty much running that show into the ground like they did with Bebop back in the day is going to hurt them one of these days.

Same with Cleveland Show, no one's biting on that. Not even as BG noise.
>>

>>
>>93372737
The reality of running a TV channel is you need a lot of shit to fill the schedule. You need money to fund new shows, but if you were suddenly making less money due to, say, a global economic downturn or a shrinking market share for your target demographic's free time, then you'd have to be more conservative with your budget. Write off the old shows, make fewer new ones, don't acquire shows from other networks as frequently, and do a lot more reruns to fill space.
