From what I can tell, until ZIM came to earth Dib was the kid too into the paranormal and who saw paranormal shit everywhere he went (possibly both real and not real) so he was a case of "cry wolf." So once Zim, a real alien comes to school no one believes him because it's turned out to be nothing so many times before. He was his own downfall, and the more he tries to prove he's right the more crazy he drives himself. He'd be happier if he focused on just stopping zim's plans when they actually work, ignoring him when they aren't working, and stop trying to clear his name as a crazy big headed kid.

I think a lot of people also gravitate to the fact that they're both in a similar position of outcast and how little anyone gives a shit about them despite them both thinking they're on an all-important mission. That's supposed to be what makes the dynamic funny, but from what I can tell shippers see potential for angst and understanding. I remember seeing a ton of angst type stuff in that pairing way back during its heyday. Plus I think people take the "fine line between love and hate" thing and run, especially because of how obsessive they can be about each other.

That's how I always saw it anyways. I never shipped anything in IZ but to me Dib/Zim and Dib/Tak always made some kind of sense in that I could see why people shipped it. Gaz ships not really but to each their own.

I both Zim/Gaz and Zim/Dib (and Dib/Tak, Zim/Tak, Gaz, Tak etc.) and while I actually like Zim/Gaz more than ZADR in this case the fujoshits might have gotten it right in the sense that that relationship does have the most to work with. Why? Just because Zim and Dib are co-protagonists and most of the show is about their interactions.

Also the unaired episode "Mopiness of Doom," if you read the script or listen to the recording, would read like a love story in other contexts, probably on purpose for humor. Basically, Dib decides to give up on chasing Zim for "real science. Zim gets severely depressed without Dib and mopes around eating so much food he gets fat and lies around all day. Meanwhile, Dib pretends to be happy but is also miserable. In the end, Dib goes back to chasing Zim because he just can't stay away and the two are happy again. That's way more to base shit on then a lot of ships.

That said, it doesn't fucking matter what ship is likely to happen. You are talking about the love lives or make believe cartoon characters. All ships have the same percentage chance of "really" happening: 0%, because the participants don't exist.
