They're both fine.

A combination of both versions might work.

The web he produces is organic, but like a spider, it doesn't launch out of his wrists. He can use it to stick to surface and connect webbing between two things, but has to manually apply it from a close range. He can use it to web people up in hand-to-hand, etc.

The web shooters themselves are Peter's design, reacting to his use of web, spinning it into a line, and launching it out.
