I haven't seen half of the later seasons, but he was pretty much a quasi celebrity prick on the offset, who enjoyed running the kids through their paces and clearly had no few issues about it.

The only time I can recall him showing even the most basic sense of humanity was when he said aloud how wrong it was that Heather read from Gwen's private diary on air.

Past that, he got comfy in his position. Every season involved twists that shook up whatever defenses or accomplishments the contestants managed; as time went on we went from just enjoying his position as the host and became a sadist enjoying every moment of putting these kids through hell because their failure meant ratings and more accolades for himself.

It's clear from Pakitew Island that Chris fears for his job and will do anything to get Total Drama renewed. To make the show a ratings grabber he has had to increase the harshness of challenges.

His character archetype is the homeschooled redneck from rural Canada. His sexism is probably the result of his upbringing rather than an concious dislike of women. Keep in mind that he works with Beth and Lindsay without issue during the final episode of TDI.
