What are some compelling stories about the Kingpin?

Born Again. Ran in Daredevil. Nothing can beat it.
Civil War II tie-in was pretty good.
Bendis run

EVERYTHING written by Miller is 10/10.
I'd even go so far as saying that no villain in comics history has ever been better written than Miller's Kingpin.

It kind of diminishes Daredevil, throughout his run Daredevil was barely anything more than an annoyance.
Aaron's Punisher MAX is nice. Great version of Bullseye, too.

I liked last rites too
OP Here. Thanks for the input. So this is what I got for Essential Kingpin.
"Born Again” (Daredevil#227-233)
"Daredevil: Love and War" (Marvel Graphic Novel #24)
“Gang War” (Daredevil#170-172)
“Hardcore” (Daredevilvol. 2 #46-50)
“In the Clutches of the Kingpin” (Amazing Spider-Man#50-52)
“Kingpin” (PunisherMax#1-5)
"Last Rites" (Daredevil #297-300)
“Spiked” (Daredevil#179-181)
"Spider-Man: Family Business"
"The Murdock Papers" (Daredevil vol. 2 # 76-81)

You should really read the entire Daredevil run, Kingpin is prevalent there throughout.
I'd drop Last Rites because, well, it's just terribly written, Chichester can't write for shit and it's only of value because Matt got back at Kingpin.
Kingpin also had good moments during Ann Nocenti's run (like how Matt was ghost lawyering an attorney in a case against him) before hoe got mad.I'd drop Aaron's PunisherMAX, it's unpopular opinion, but it's just edge-fest with Kingpin getting buttfucked and Bullseye being more on the "cuz lulz" side rather than being obsessive skilled assassin

Is it just me or does Fisk in these panels look a lot like Bendis?

You really should read ALL of Miller's first run, not just select issues. Kingpin goes through such an unbelievably in-depth character arc that it's almost depressing to think that there's nothing even remotely comparable to it in modern comics.
