Maybe you guys haven't watched S1 in a while but the difference in lore then and how it was in S2 is huge. I expect S3 will have slightly more lore than S2 because of the primary focus on Mewni and the fact that we're starting off the season with a "lore" episode (so who knows how much we'll have gotten by the middle and end).

There are always jokes but I do see what OP means by "comedy" episodes, ex. episodes not designed to have worldbuilding or advance the plot or have character development or whatever. "Filler," maybe, and I think those can be done differently-- seems possible to me that since even the lighter episodes have a good chance of being on Mewni, we'll get bits of lore/wordbuilding mixed in so it doesn't just feel like it's padding out the season.

There are always JOKES, but I think in the second season especially there are episodes in which the story or character stuff was more important than the humor despite both being there (the last few minutes of Just Friends, for example, have a greater focus on Star's emotions than any humor).

I also think the OP probably meant "filler" episodes rather than "this show should have no comedy ever," but that it seems people might be misinterpreting the post as the latter statement. I don't think having fewer episodes like Pizza Thing, for example, is impossible for the show to do-- can still have a funny episode while we learn something more about Mewni at the same time.

At this point I don't see the show as "90%" anything anymore. I am into the lore more than other aspects but I've been watching from the beginning.

In the first season you could arguably just watch the first two segments, St. O's, and the episodes Toffee appears and have all the "plot" out of the way.

It's more continuous in the second season, with maybe like half the segments in total relating back to the "serious" plot in some way (every Ludo appearance alone is already more of an arc than S1 had). So it's not surprising that someone could find that more interesting when it's no longer an extremely minor part of the show.

Of course even those episodes not connected to the big plot still have worldbuilding stuff that plays into it (like Mewberty), and I do think watching everything is the best. And if you're talking about someone who watches it but still hates the humor then I guess I'd agree.

But now the plot has become fairly prominent, while in the first season it definitely wasn't. Just starting off the new season with an arc directly continuing from the last finale is proof of that.

If S1 hadn't ended with a fuckoff huge finale, it might not have gotten renewed for a second at all (a 13-episode first season sure seems to project "we don't really care about or expect much from this show," just look at the length of other Disney cartoons at the time).

If S2 hadn't ramped up the lore from there Disney also might not have been inclined to go for 3 (why keep renewing when you can just replay the same episodes, if it's mostly episodic), and if it hadn't gained a larger fanbase in 2 it might not have gone for 4.

Meant on Disney's side; it had definitely been renewed long before the season got close to the finale.

Like if they ended the season with a strong cliffhanger and pretty much said to executives "yeah, we plan to continue this next season if we get one" it was that much more likely they'd get that than if the last episode had been The Banagic Incident or something. They proved early on they had ambition, is sort of what I think, and the positive reception the previews/premieres got only made that seem better.

Based on when they apparently started 2 (February 2015), I'm not sure they knew for sure they'd necessarily be renewed when finishing production of 1. Several people on the crew went on to other jobs because, unlike every other season afterward, there was a gap in between production of 1 and 2 since Disney took longer to renew it then.

Sabrina Cotugno was promoted to a director position for Season 4, a similar role to what Giancarlo Volpe had up to the start of production on Season 3.
Sabrina will be one of a team of several directors whose role is to oversee, direct and coordinate storyboarders and the animation process.
She will not be writing the show, anymore than she did when she was a storyboarder on Season 2 (and 3).

Daron Nefcy is not Rebecca Sugar, this show has been her baby for a decade and she's not going to let anybody run away with it.
Disney (XD) is certainly not Cartoon Network, they have total confidence in Nefcy and have given her a lot of freedom with the show but their content standards are still tight-laced.

I enjoy any episode as long as it is entertaining and engaging. Episodes like the Magician sucking the happiness wasn't particularly funny or engaging. The Halloween episode was entertaining even though there wasn't any lore. The same thing can be said for that episode where they had to break out Ponyhead from the reform school. If you've only jumped on board because of the romance subplot and the Toffee subplot I'd wager you're getting ready for disappointment. How can you dislike episodes like the Tomco one?
