Sunday Superman thread. Let's bask in the warm glow of Kal-El and think about how Superman has enriched all our lives.
No matter how many versions of Superman there are or how many people shit on him, to me Superman is the true American superhero. He is the good Samaritan who will rescue your cat from a tree or help you pull your car out of the mud. I understand that to keep him interesting they have to have him be involved in 21st century moral dilemmas, but at his core he will always be our #1 boy scout. who always saves the day.

Picked up "The Golden Age of Superman Vol. 1" and was surprised to see how the very first Superman was so short with criminals and savage af.
He forces a munitions manufacturer to join the army by threat of killing him, enlists with him, watches him break down and promise never to manufacture munitions again. Then he forces the Generals to fight out the rest of the war, and they say "I don't have a problem with him!" and resolve that wars are only fought to sell ammunition.
In the first issue he just ruthlessly beats people up and only says asshole one liners.
He is a total spineless fag in front of Lois in the first issue though. The real world story of Action Comics #1 is interesting as well.

Can Superman break lightspeed at will?
I have read a bunch of Superman comics where he goes from the earth to the sun in less than a minute.
You'd have to travel at 8 times to speed of light to do that. We're talking 2 398 339 664 m/s here, which is pretty fucking insane.

Met Dean Cain on the weekend, he was pretty cool

Yeah, running he's slower than flash, but flying he's as fast if not faster over time

I'm all for Superman's first foray being an enormous undertaking.
But the weight of having to kill Zod to save the day isn't something the works as well without a properly established moral baseline for the character... Which is exactly why you got all those "Man of Murder" post immediately after the movie.
One film does not establish a firm enough handle on your movie iteration to allow for that without blast back.

I want to be a good man like Superman but something has clouded my mind and I think I might be traumatized. I was on /tv/ a few weeks back and some anon posted a webm with a spoiler tag which I clicked on, I felt sick to my stomach because it turned out to be CP. Nothing usually gets to me, I'm quite thick-skinned, I've seen gory pics on /b/ and it didn't phase me much. But since I saw that, I can't seem to get it out of my head. I'm probably overreacting but I'm not sure how to just forget about it.
What would Superman do, /co/? I just want to go back to the way things were.

>>93314981
>Parasite
>I feel like this would be a welcome change of the formula.
Agreed but something critical with Parasite for me is that they do not do the blob monster forms he has had, it will look awful in cgi.
He needs to be more subtle, humanoid and slender man-ish like Alex Ross's version you see here.
>MEtallo
>Feel like he's a solid choice.
Only if they make him kinda sympathetic like in Tas.
>The Elite
Absolutely fucking not.
They are a condemnation of the desperate heroism under limitations that the Dceu has accepted as their reality so far. They would feel like a irrational demonization of Mos & Clark choosing to kill rather then let MILLIONS of lives die just to avoid getting blood on his hand like a negligent fucking coward.
Agreed on Livewire, I think she could team with Volcana.
Superman is looking for the good in everybody. Even people who try to kill him.

Take comfort in knowing that shit like that actually disgusted you and that you weren't indifferent to it.
Is Superman immortal?
As I understand it once he gets old he can just fly to the sky, consume radiation and become young again, correct?
>>93315601
Sometimes it's that the older he gets the slower he ages.
Some embrace his 'retirement' in becoming The Sun's janitor, where after a billion years or so he comes out and gets to be with a cosmic iterative of Lois forever.
Me, I want Superman to age normally, retire some day, have grandkids that visit him and he tells them silly stories they only half believe but are all true.
>>93315601
He ages very very very slowly. His post crisis canon ending(by way of jla 1M) is he becomes a literal golden god who is effectively immortal
>>93315601
Yes and no. It depends on which version.
>>93315586
It's a three-issue miniseries, circa 2005, written by Scott McCloud (of Understanding Comics fame) with art by Alur Amancio (a cartoonist and and animator who worked on Superman:TAS). It is seriously fun stuff. Unfortunately, it's also kind of obscure. It never got a TPB, so you have to hunt up either back issues or not-that-good scans.
>>93315230
He used to say great scott all the time. Might be too many field trips to old krypton and it rubbed on him
Not familiar with the comics, I only know about Superman from the last 3 movies and the Justice League cartoon, but can anyone explain why he limits himself to Metropolis? Couldn't he do so much good all over the world?

>>93315841
He doesn't limit himself to Metropolis. But he lives and works there, and so do his rogues.
>>93315841
There are several reasons depending on the writer. The most common is the post crisis reasoning that superman is just a facet of his life along with being a journalist; this means he needs to be on metropolis most of the time to be on the job, consequence of this is he with metropolis disasters most of the time and only deals in global events whenever needed.
>>93315841

>Gareth Edwards for Superman
Love his directing style. HIs visuals can be better than Snyder's because he focuses on natural scenic views rather than busy designs. He also knows how to make CGI blend into an environment better by shooting on location, not a constant green screen.
What I do fear though is that he'd be less void of character if he did a Superman film. We'd still have a basic Cavilman, basic Metropolis, but just a different tone. But other than that, he truly captures the spirit of whatever he works on.
>>93308280
I love these occasions in which he has to use his powers in unconventional ways instead of just puching or burning his enemies.

Kingdom Come has one of my favorite Superman moments. It's when he comes out of retirement, stops the firefight and saves the civilians.
>We need HOPE!
>Superman arrives
Now, we, as the reader know that things aren't going to be 100% okay, but even with a new darker, symbol, and even with that uncharacteristic scowl he's wearing, everyone immediately relaxes. They cheer. Because Superman's there, and everyone immediately knows that that means things are going to be alright.
>>93295632
Oh easily. He once had to go at a miniumum of 2.36 million times light speed, due to travelling to and from Earth and the Andromeda Galaxy in about 10 hours.
..and that's lowballing it, he was likely a magnitude of order faster.
He once flew back from the edge of the universe to earth, moving at least 250 billion times light speed.
Sure the Flash might be faster, but Superman is still fast as fuck when he needs to be.
