John just makes a legal living, he never shits on people for nothing
It's a lazy easy character.
Characters are allowed to be one dimensional if you rip off Wolverine and/or your favorite old action movie protagonist enough.
Because they give the writers more flexibility and the ability to take the best of both worlds. Modern audiences reject the old-school earnest goody two shoes Boy Scout types of older comics but you usually can't base a series around a flat-out monster. The antihero allows you to have an actual hero but with the cool/dangerous aspects of a villain.
