The big problem with Pharah is that they quickly seemingly retconned the only interesting thing about her (Mommy issues, when said Mom is considered one of the greatest heroes in the world).

It quickly turns out that she actually loves her Mom big time, the only reason she acts so bitter about it all is that she knows her Mom never wanted her to be a soldier but she became one anyway.


D.Va has less personality for the record though. She's just slotted in with no real link to anybody else, and the only argument she has with anyone in the game is Widowmaker calling her a child, which brings back the epic response of "WHO ARE YOU CALLING A CHILD?!" I might miss some bits here, because Genji is the character I care the least about. This is split into two parts.

Genji was the second heir to the Shimada Clan. He was also a brat. While his older brother Hanzo took his position and training seriously, Genji would rather go down to the local arcade and waste his time slacking off. Genji disgraced his clans name repeatedly, until eventually he went too far. Hanzo was ordered to take care of him. While conflicted, Hanzo did try to assassinate his brother. For many years, Hanzo assumed he had killed Genji and would soon run away from his Clan in shame, questioning what on earth he had just done. But having fled the scene rather than check the body, Hanzo never knew that his hesitant shots, while mortally wounding Genji, hadn't killed him on the spot. He was found by Overwatch.

Dr Angela Ziegler, aka Mercy, Overwatch's young medical scientist got to work on rebuilding Genji. Part machine and fueled by anger at his brothers betrayal, Genji was put under the command of Blackwatch's leader Gabriel Reyes (Reaper. Jesse McCree was also part of this team). As part of this team, he would work in the shadows, doing the jobs too dirty for Overwatch's name, while also sparring with Overwatch's new recruits such as Lena Oxton (Who would go on to become Tracer).

Mercy would join Tracer and two of the founders of Overwatch (Lt Reinhardt Wielhem and Torbjörn Lindholm) in a mission to save London from the Omnic Terrorist group Null Sector. While they were ultimately successful in their mission, Commander Morrison's decision to send them into a place that they had been told to stay out of would ultimately see the Governement take apart Overwatch. Mercy would disappear for several years after this, off to do humanitarian work mostly. Supposedly.

Finally tracking down his brother after all these years, Genji confronted Hanzo and was able to defeat him in combat. Instead of killing him like he had imagined all those years ago, Genji offered an olive branch. He asked Hanzo to consider joining him at Overwatch. Genji would leave Hanzo to think.

Mercy would come out of hiding too, and hasn't aged a day. Mercy is a woman of mystery, but it is clear that at least one hero, Mei-Ling Zhou, is growing suspicious of who Angela really is.

She isn't acting of her own accord, she was tortured, brainwashed and biologically altered to become Talon's asset.

Eh, maybe I worded it poorly to hit the character limit. Plus I was thinking of a line where Mercy asked Mei, in a rather concerned tone "W-why are you looking at me Mei?", but it turns out that line was about Mei wanting to make Snow Angels in Volskaya.


But their interactions do make it clear that Mercy is obsessed with a "Fountain of Youth" kind of quest and that Mei is the only one who seems to notice that Mercy is still youthful (She's roughly the same age as McCree, but while the cowboy has clearly aged, Mercy still looks the same as she did when she was 18).

One interaction is Mercy eagerly asking Mei what her secret for looking so young was. Mei mumbles that she wouldn't advise anyone try it.

A second has Mei curiously pointing out that Mercy hasn't aged a day since she last saw Mercy so many years ago. Mercy immediately deflects attention away from her by coldly pointing out that Mei hasn't aged either.

The world is pretty dark underneath the games optimistic tone.
