>May 2017 was a win for the comic-book direct market, if a qualified one; comics shops ordered $48.16 million worth of comic books, trade paperbacks, and magazines in the month, an increase of more than 8% over the same month in the previous year. That month, however, had only four Wednesdays, while this May had five New Comic Book Days. Last May was also one of the weakest months of the year, a "holding pattern" month in advance of Civil War II and DC's Rebirth. But it's the first up month since October 2016, so we'll take it.

>Marvel's performance, about which much was written this winter, improved year-over-year — although, following a pattern we've seen in 2017, the rest of the market improved by more. The overall market was up around $3.7 million; $700,000 of the addition came from Marvel and $3 million from everyone else. That said, Marvel's last year-over-year beat was back in August 2016, so positive movement is noteworthy. The market without Marvel is up 4.2% for 2017, so a few more good months for the publisher could turn the industry's year positive overall.

[...]

>It's all a reminder that, as I've written many times, the distributor charts are not a scoreboard. They were created to help retailers place their future orders, and it's helpful for them to, for example, know how the lenticular and regular versions were ordered relative to one another. Yielding a true "winner" every month for spectator interest is irrelevant to the charts' purpose; for the shops, it's not a game.

They still had to divide up the lenticular/standard covers up due to price, huh? Guess it'll be the same as last month where it'll be some standard "SECRET EMPIRE'S ON TOP!!!" followed by laughter when they see the combined sales.

Also...

> 1. SECRET EMPIRE #1 (MAR) $4.99
> 2. VENOM #150 (MAR) $5.99
> 5. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: MISSION BREAKOUT #1 (MAR) $4.99
> 6. SECRET EMPIRE #2 (MAR) $4.99
> 8. SECRET EMPIRE #3 (MAR) $3.99
> 9. ALL-NEW GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 (MAR) $3.99

Christ, no wonder Marvel's dollar share is so high. That's a complete reaming of their customer base.
>>
Me and my friends have been enjoying Secret Empire so far, I'm the biggest Cap fanboy of the group and I'm perfectly fine seeing him playing the part of the villain for a bit.

Never understood the buttrage over the event, it's the most I've been entertained by Marvel since some time, even if I agree that they need to fuck off with events for a while.

Probably not. Combined Lenticular/regular covers beat out a #0 issue in April. #0 issues sell considerably less than #1 issues.

I can't get mad of Secret Empire doing well. I hate event comics these days but it was set up a long time ago and it's decently written. Even though i only read issue one and Pymtron i actually bought cause I'm a Pynfag and been collecting his stuff since he merged with Ultron.

It's the GotG that's frustrating cause they haven't had a good comic in a while. Are either of them decently written?

And Venom...Spiderman sells and by association Venom. Do people bitch about Batman selling? yes and not the point

Fuck rebirth, fuck giving fans what "they want"...they want these Events and whatever character is popular (Guardians of the galaxy, Batman, Wolverine, etc.) having N°1´s comics.
That sells and that what marvel did, do and will do.
>>
>>93247398
Hi, Shifty Ducking!
>>
>>93246715
It is. DC has been pretty ginger (by modern standards) about events.
>>
>>93247336
Marvel's sales continue to slump and events makes less and less money. Rome wasn't built in a day and it didn't fall in one either.
>>

>>
>>93245790
>1. SECRET EMPIRE #1 (MAR)

>8. SECRET EMPIRE #3 (MAR)

No wonder they're burning through these in one month. Retailers wouldn't know to adjust their orders until the next month or two so it'll still make Marvel's sales look good.
>>
>>93245790
>> 5. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: MISSION BREAKOUT #1 (MAR)

I like Hasting's work, but this seems unusually high on the chart. Were there incentives for this one? It wasn't in Funko's Marvel Collectors Corps box (the last one had Secret Empire #0 and the upcoming one has Zdarsky's Spectacular Spider-Man). Maybe it was in another subscription box?
>>
>>93249166
Was it any good? I haven't read any GotG since the movies are either of them even worth pirating? Cause the bendis stuff was unreadable
>>
>>93249255
The new ongoing by Duggan is actually pretty good. The latest issue had really good art.
That "Mission Breakout" that you mentioned is just a tie-in to a new Disney ride
>>
>>93249166
That's Hastings? I thought he was just doing I Am Groot and Gwenpool.
>>
So, Saga was no1 right? Those 25 cents not counting aka shit reason not to count a core issue of a series would attract vast amounts of people to their LCS to buy it, even if they never heard it "Shit's is 25 cents though"
>>
>>93249332
>That "Mission Breakout" that you mentioned is just a tie-in to a new Disney ride

That'd explain it. They probably have copies of it over at Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure.
>>
>>93246822
>Are either of them decently written?
I have no idea what Mission Breakout is and this is the first I'm even hearing of it, but Duggan's GotG is alright so far. At the very least, it's leagues better than Bendis' run. And Phyla-Vel showed up!
>>
>>93246526
No shit, it's Batman. Batman is always in the Top 10. Hell, it's usually in the Top 3 unless there's an event comic or hot overshipped #1 to bump it down, as is the case here.
>>
>>93250008
Yeah, but those copies wouldn't be ordered through Diamond.
>>

>> 2. DC ENTERTAINMENT - 27.93%

>> 1. MARVEL COMICS - 39.91%

But I thought Rebirth was going to have long standing sales?
This is what you get DC, you tried to beat Marvel at their own game and now you find yourself publishing crap and still selling about as much as you always do. But hey, don't try making great comics, just run after that fast buck like marvel is doing.
>>
>>93250095
We don't know for sure. Diamond doesn't distribute to newsstands, but Marvel stopped using the newsstand market five years ago (the only Marvel magazines that show up on newsstands are the Disney kids magazines and that reprint digest being done by Archie).
>>
>>93251368
Yeah but image has only 10% market share. They are doing trade sales well
>>
>>93250715
According to what I've heard from LCS workers those 25 cent issues really don't do much for the sales of the book long term.
>>
>>93251835
It doesn't. Cause floppy buyers don't look for sales much. How many people look at thos back issue boxes stores have? I only go on the 25 cent day cause they are layed out decently.

Cheep trades get a person. 10 dollar image trades get me trying a few books i didn't before
>>
>>93245790

I guess all those SJWs buying copies so they can burn them bumped up sales.

Not really strange, here's DC's 1:5000 cover for Dark Knight 3: Master Race #1. I know DC did a 1:5000 for a Vader mini-series too but I think those two are the highest numbers. I thought there was a 1:10,000 SW book but I could be wrong.
>>
>>93253041
>I know Marvel did a 1:5000 for a Vader mini-series

fucked up, sorry
>>
>>93252786
Basically the idea is that the demand for the rare variant might make up for the cost of any unsold comics. I forgot, how much do retailers pay when they order comics? Like 50% or more off cover price?
>>
>>93252856
DC are retarded for trying to chase the fast buck and imitating marvel, they should return to making GOOD comics instead of shitty gimmicks that will give them a small boost before returning them to their usual place.
>>
>>93253138
Discount through Diamond is depending on how much you spent, but anyone buying 1000 of one book is probably paying the minimum. I believe tthe discount is 55-60%

A smaller stores discount is probably only 25-30%, so they're not going to bother with a variant like this.
>>
>>93253189
You are delusional, do you know how many #1, SE and etc Marvel launched from 2016 to this month? Every other month there is a couple of new books + all the star wars bullshit
>>
>>93253189
How is DC copying Marvel? They had no #1 saturation or major event books come out. The Button was a crossover made out of comics that were being made anyhow.
>>
>>93253376
>They had no #1 saturation

That's exactly what Rebirth was. They relaunched all their big books to #1 (even gave them specials the month before so they could get TWO #1's! Smart).

Why do you think DC beat Marvel in sales for a few months? Quality had nothing to do with it. They shit out a bunch of new #1's with all but a couple of them focused on or centered around their biggest most popular characters.
>>
>>93253431
> New 52 was in 2011
> Rebirth was in 2016
> 5 fucking years in difference

Now count how many events, crossovers, special editions, gimmick covers and complete relaunches Marvel had between Marvel Now! and Marvel Now! 2.0

C'mon dude you can't be this stupid and you are baiting us
>>
>it's a Marvelfags don't understand context episode
Good on you guys. All you had to do to "beat" DC was out out 25% more books, have a massive event, have tons of tie-ins, release a bunch of new #1's and have a shit ton of incentive and store variants (plus maybe some free over-shipping for good measure)

Grats guys.
>>
>>93253431
>Why do you think DC beat Marvel in sales for a few months? Quality had nothing to do with it. They shit out a bunch of new #1's with all but a couple of them focused on or centered around their biggest most popular characters.
So you're blaming DC for something they did last year, while ignoring that doing that very thing is why Marvel "won" right now?

Besides I bet The Button still outsold SE when you combine the issue numbers together retard.

>>
It is impressive how much garbage Marvel can release, and people still buy it in huge numbers. I know there's this whole thing about Marvel supposedly stumbling, but the shops buying this crap from Diamond don't seem to have heard.

I'm okay with it - if people want to buy tons of Marvel shit, it keeps comic shops alive and that helps keep actual good comics available.
