I think they meant Era-2 gem.
That basically means gems born during the second era, when Homeworld can no longer produce quality gems due to resource shortage. That's why Era-2 gems have technological enhancements.

The theory isn't that Aquamarines and Peridots didn't exist in Era 1. It's that they might have been taller and had innate powers.

The Aquamarine we've seen doesn't seem to summon her wand the same way that gems summon their weapons, she just turns her hair tie into it.

Depending on an Aquamarine's function in Era 1 she may not need full limb enhancers like a Peridot
