He had a shitty best friend, a boss that was always on his back because of the shit his friend did (usually), the job he's in being because of his friend, and despite having 2 women that wanted his dick, he couldn't stop having social anxiety. It didn't help one girl was a psychotic bitch and tried to kill people over misunderstandings. His life sucked and there was no way out.

Mordecai is my favorite character in fiction. His design automatically made him a cool character.

I kinda feel Stuck in an Elevator was tied to New Year's Kiss where future rigby using some advanced tech told s5 rigby that if he fucked up and shit mordecai wouldn't be happy, and most of mordecai's depression stems from the romance shit being dragged out with cj, which makes me wonder if future rigby, or s8 in space rigby, was supposed to attempt something.

Because in NYK Mordecai was either not supposed to kiss CJ and that Tracy chick, or just one or the other, but he apparently got where he was destined to be in the end because Rigby didn't stop him apparently kissing Tracy which means Mordecai's fate wasn't changed from what Future Rigby was warning about.

I felt his whole series arc was about figuring out how to be an adult. It's all growing pains. Mordecai has stunted his own growth, is realizing it, and he doesn't know what to do about it. So he's sad. He's sad and he isn't doing anything about it.

So every episode is kind of 1 step forward 1 step back. Every once and a while its 2 steps forward 1 step back. or just 1 step forward. But he's figuring it out.

But when you aren't seeing the progress he hates himself for it. Sounds like depression.
At the very least its a quarter life crisis.

In Mordecai's case he was settling with doing little with his life and barely bothering with it at all, he wasn't happy about it and that's why he was always goofing around and slacking

Not throughout the whole show. Season 1 and 2 especially were more episodic and simply focused on the premise.

I think that the writers and storyboarders always tried to lay the foundation for possible arcs for the characters, but then had to abandon or rush that idea. Mordecai getting an arc not related to girlfriend trouble would have been much better.

It's also worth noting that everything you just said also applies to Rigby, and Rigby has the bonus issue of horribly debilitating self-esteem issues. If Mordecai is feeling down, Rigby will immediately jump up and try to make him feel better, but Rigby has to fucking move the earth itself just to get Mordecai to give him the support he desperately needs, to hear that those mean put-downs and jabs are just jokes and that Mordecai really does like being Rigby's friend.

Despite that (or maybe because of it), Rigby managed to mature sooner than Mordecai, and mostly overcome his issues (he still has his moments, obviously, but he grew quite a bit from the "STOP TALKIIIIIIING!" spaz we knew from the get-go).

that was just because they wanted to focus on mordecai falling into a rut and having his more deeper characteristic show, that he was really sucking at life

meanwhile rigby was different, he had a different attitude towards life and basically coasted by, with very few bumps, he was simple in the life game but mordecai was complicated, therefore he needed more screentime to deal with it and make it apparent

i agree though with jake making him the mentor type sucks

Honestly I can get down with depressed Finn but I don't really like the way they handled it, like in that episode where he made out with all the girls he was depressed then he got his arm back and was happy, that was a wack ending to that thing. But whenever he shows in the rest of the show how he's sadder my heart goes out to him, kid deserves a happy ending.

Also, sort of unrelated, Jake was always a mentor? I mean early on in AT Finn would be the crazy kid who wanted to rip and tear everything and Jake would calm him down and advise what Finn should do, that was a thing since day 1. I feel like Jake just got less relevant as the series went on because he was always the secondary character then the show went to focus on people beside Finn and Jake.

he was ready to accept his death whenever just because it was destiny, and the weight of not being the father he wish he had been is on him constantly, along with the problems he had with his family

while for finn I think breezy could have been a better episode yeah but at the same time some people misinterpreted it in my opinion, during the whole episode he was just trying to feel something, dating princesses was his way of trying to do that, but he was so out of it he couldn't even bring himself to care with the whole LSP thing. And then in the end the part with princess bubblegum, it meant his love for adventures, not for the princess. The arm growing back was iffy but hey at least it's gone again now, this time for good

Ross tells Mordo he noticed his resume at a job fair, mordecai gets nervous since Rigby's beside him, Rigby gets sad hearing it, and after he hands him the card and gets ready to leave says something like "If you're tired of paying for other people's mistakes, give me a call".

It added depth where Future Mordecai ended up working for him, shame it was cut.

How do I get back into RS?
I liked it back in the day but sometime in like 2013 or so I fell out of it, it just couldn't keep my interest, and from what I've heard over the years they kept going with the boring Mordecai love drama that no one ever liked. I just wanted fun 80's music and wacky shenanigans.

...I was fine with the romance stuff until Season 6. It's a bumpy road but it pays off if you like the characters themselves. If you're in it for the 80s references and wacky fun times, that's still present in most episodes. I'd say just give it a chance and go into season 6 with an open mind.

It's amazing that every song they used in the series I liked, there weren't any shitty ones, JG had top picks.

It was a thing in the recent seasons that he did get slightly better, and the series tried to portray it as him getting marginally better and Mordecai said "I always liked that I was doing better than you before", despite that not meaning maturity I can see how he said that, plus in the mid seasons Rigby started just helping Mordecai out with his love life in a way that made him seem above it
