Why would you depower a character who you're trying to make more popular? Those are characters you want to show at their best. Their flaws should involve them as a person, not their powers. Them using their powers should be their time to shine.
Once you've actually got an audience, then you can show how you character is still awesome even WITHOUT powers, because you've shown that they are, despite any flaws they have, awesome WITH them.
