Making a still 3D model like this is not too difficult. Animating it in all kinds of ways, is.

It's like the difference between drawing a piece of 2d artwork, and animating 2d artwork. If you were to animate something that looked like a painting, and have it look good, it'd require a fuckton of effort.

That's what they went for with Inside Out, wasn't it? With the faces sorta looking 2D and appealing to the camera even though it'd look weird from a different angle in the scene. Like Fear and his squashed up face, always looking right for the camera.

I think it'd be a pretty awesome look to go for, and would look amazing to pull off for a series when the tech and budget is there.

Very nice but let's see it animated.

Models like this work for simply animated or repetitive video games, like pokemon, but I'd have a hard time watching an entire show or movie with characters like this. I'd rather see genuine 2-D animation or 3-D models that someone actually put effort into rather than this cheap attempt at both.

the other neat methods I've seen are just make the drawn stuff look more like the CG (majestic prince, a pretty shitty anime, but the art handling was neat) or rotoscope or draw over some parts of the 3d model

It's all in the coloring and skins for the models. Studios don't do this, because, they believe that 2d looking animation is dead.
