The plan is for the theme of the series to be about maturity and growing up. Star will grow up into becoming a proper queen and have to leave Marco behind. Marco will grow up beyond his simple childhood fantasies of Jackie and realize the perfect girl for him was by his side the whole time.

Manna end was being set up from the very beginning, down to even the character designs. Even Janna's and Marco's color pallets were chosen to fit together perfectly.

We're definitely getting more tomco moments in season as confirmed by Daron in the Mexico meet & greet.
Based on her comments in the same event, it seems she's indeed keeping starco apart for as long as she can for dat sweet angst and will-they-or-won't-they excitement and drama, so it's entirely possible Starco won't happen till the last season, and meanwhile Tom and Marco will deepen their epic bromance.

Honestly there's actually a chance there'll be a brief, fleeting moment in time where tomco will seem more likely than starco, if you squint and are willing to ignore the obvious endgame signs. It's unbelievable but it might happen.

As a rabid tomcofag, I have to say that in my opinion the chances of tomco being endgame are, in light of all this info, close to non-existent, sure Nefcy could pull a Korra ending for the SURPRISE BITCHES shock value, but I doubt she will and everything seems to be steadily building towards Starco. Which is fine, imma just enjoy the ride and the blatant über-romantic ship trolling from the crew and the fun, fuzzy and warm feels

Yeah, as good as the show got in S2 I think a greater focus on Mewni is pretty necessary by now. The Mewni plot/lore episodes were so far ahead of the Earth SoL episodes last season it was ridiculous; at least SoL stuff on Mewni can provide worldbuilding.

Also forgot to mention that 3 and 4 will each have 21 episodes, so we're not even halfway through the series yet.
