The only thing I don'l like so far is HD&L loudly telegraphing their distinct personalities. The newphews are ONE character in 3 bodies; I don't know what's so upsetting about that for modern writers.

The boring art direction and staging do trouble me. Something a bit more exuberant in the style of the new Mickey shorts would have been nice for the former, considering the International Shenanigans concept of the show; as for the later, it comes with the Zeitgeist, so that's that.

I'm generally optimistic; I just really hope it's not just 20 minutes of wacky high-energy chases and they actually go for some elaborate settings and adventures though.

Freakin' amateurs. This is what happens when you animated characters on 2s, then drop them into After Effects and do a tween on 1s. The animation is constantly jerking back and forth because each image is being displayed twice at different positions, so it ruins the original FBF animation.

It's especially apparently in the early shots where they're trying to do fancy stuff with the panels. Really tedious to fix and most people won't notice, but I agree, it just kind of subconsciously grates on you.

I watched DuckTales every goddamn afternoon after school and it was fucking brilliant. Had the opportunity to watch some of the new Mickey Mouse shorts recently and they were very good.

The animation is a bit hyper-stylized (but admittedly I think old stuff looks better nine times out of ten), similar to the material we've seen in the new DT footage that's been released, but there's great direction and, yes, that classic Disney feel.

Disney XD doesn't do TV ratings anymore, at least for their cartoons, don't know about their live-action shit. It's all about the Disney XD app now. That's what got Star vs. 4 seasons and Milo Murphy a second, even though absolutely nobody cared about the latter at all on TV. If you want to judge Ducktales' success to Disney XD, it'll be when they report the views in the app

They were "competent" in the fact that they rarely got hurt during adventures, always had a solution, were able to give wise advice, and didn't really take shit from anyone (I'm combining the two right now obviously). Not competent in that they were Tomb Raider levels of fighters.

However, Beakley NOW seems to be that case and even Webby seems to be gifted in the art of adventuring. They're going to be even more boring than before. Flaws and mistakes is why people love Scrooge, Donald, and Launchpad so much while characters like Daisy and Webby are forgotten about. The only way to make a fun girl character it seems is to also have them be a villain.

Steven Universe really has a lot of different female characters who are very flawed. Rose was a patronizing oblivious do-gooder even if she wasn't Murder Rose, Pearl a neurotic perfectionist with her creepy Rose crush that extended onto Steven who she almost killed a few times, Amy has issues about being "defective" but wanting to be strong, Jasper has her Nietzche strong crush the weak philosophy but she craves some kind of community, Peridot is an autistic bitch but trying to get better, Connie needs a mission and thinks for a while being a footsoldier/warrior is it even if she throws her life away. You can not like the show or its writing but it has a lot of different female personalities and they're fucked up.

I also think that Star Butterfly started out meh but has gotten a lot better and more interesting.

Sylvia and Lord Dominator from WOY were both fun characters.

The first Avatar was also good with this. Katara, Toph, and Azula had different personalities and you didn't see many female villains like Azula. Korra's writing was shit overall but there was potential in characters like Lin Bei Fong who again you didn't see a lot (hardened old female police chief, I guess Barbara in Batman Beyond but she wasn't in the show much).

I think it's gotten a lot better since the 80s and 90s.

Except for the grappling hook and seeming energetic, Webby does seem more like Dipper than Mabel so far in some ways. She wants to be an adventurer and fangirls over an adventurer (Donald) like Dipper did with Ford. Mabel didn't really care about the adventures. Actually I always had that problem with GF. Mabel should have cared about the adventures.

Unfortunately Mabel was a huge hit and really popular with normies and kids so there might be a push to "make another Mabel" or maybe "make more Mabels" in general.

It's okay to admit a show has flaws, you know? You don't have to pretend as if everything is perfect all the time, and that any and all criticisms are merely hatemongering and unmerited.

I like the direction the show is going in, though, it feels really genuine. I never really liked the original Ducktails (har har sue me) but this seems true to what the original intended. The animation is choppy during times it shouldn't be, but I won't hold that against it. I'm glad to see that they're giving Donald the "Duck Dodgers" treatment in others playing up his expertise.

It seems pretty clear that this is going to be Disney's backup Gravity Falls, and because of that, I'm willing to look past the blocky, constricted, and ultimately less emotive art direction. It's a test in writer competency, whether these people can pull off a worthwhile adventure. I'll probably come back when the whole season airs.

I just noticed that the Donald's Birthday short does show a picture of a pair of ducks who do look like the parents of Scrooge as depicted in Don Rosa's comic-universe.
So in that regard, we do now have a canonical animated version of Scrooge's father and mother.

Most of them are simple gags whose comedy can be understood visually. Except this one. Here, Della bemoans her popular childhood nickname "Dumbella" which unfortunately for her, stuck. To cheer her up, Donald makes up a song that makes fun of her name, his name, and Gyro's name which cheers her up. As he walks away, Donald secretly thinks about how he always found her nickname funny not because of the "Dumb" part, but because it reminded him of "Dumbo" and the fusion visual always cracks him up.
