So I may become a foster parent to some estranged family, one boy and one girl.

I don't have tv or a vidya console and they aren't gonna have access to smartphones for a while, so all I can give them entertainment wise is my robust collection of movies anime and cartoons. Problem is most of it is adult oriented.

So what should I download in advance for them, as far as cartoons are concerned?
>>

Hey Arnold
Adventure Time

Sell your shit and get a TV or they'll go crazy. Give them control of what they want to watch, don't try to project your interests on them.

Plenty of people don't have TVs.

>>
>>93210431
I dunno man you don't need TV to have a good time. Toys and like not video games do a great job. Encourage creativity and whatnot.

That said, I've been trying to do similar stuff with my baby brothers so here is like a corraborated list of "stuff they like" and "stuff I like"

The Red Turtle (Its completely dialogueless storytelling, and is a weird artsy movie with some sincerity. 5 year old baby brothers were enthralled... not sure how appropriate it i)

Voltron (its on netflix, its got action, so it will fill the "hey they can choose" bit)

Ed Edd n' Eddy (both brothers liked it but early episodes were harder for my particularly adhd-y one.)

Wallace and Grommit (I've watched the penguin one and the serial killer one with baby brothers, though my personal favorite was the Robotdog one with shaun)

Octonauts (again skews a little younger but its like Thunderbirds, but with undersea facts. Little kritters go on adventures in rescue vehicles to help out blobfish, zebra eels, sea jellies, and freshwater dolphins.)

Samurai Jack (minimal expository dialogue and lots of pretty imagery, so like good without going over little kids heads, but damn it was more like something I put on just to watch something for myself without freaking out the little ones)

Speed Racer (guilty pleasure, remembered wearing out the VHS when I was a kid, Mostly by playing havoc with rewind and fastforward
>>
>>93210728
Plenty of people don't have cable, it's unusual to not have a TV to watch movies or play games on.
>>
How old are the kids?
>>
Most cartoons aren't "adult oriented" and should be fine to show them. Anime should be fine too as long as it's not like Kiss x Sis or some shit.
>>
>>93210744
Depends on wether they get their shit together or not. I don't expect them to, though, they're pretty fucked up and only started caring about their kids once they started being strapped for cash, and they refuse to live off welfare cause they're paranoid about getting locked up for their drug problems.

>>
Star ship troopers
Running man
Demolition man
Die hard
Terminator
Rambo

My mum raised on 80's action movies
You should do the same
It'll be great, trust me
>>
>>93210913

you might only be half serious but 80's action movies are unironically better material than most child ones

they teach you:

>bad guys aren't always easy to identify at first
>people might betray you and make your life difficult for no reason
>death is a fact of life but that only makes saving lives more important
>there's nothing wrong with harming someone if there's no other way to stop them from hurting you or someone else
>you might lose friends and bad things can happen to you but you can never give up and cry
>guns are dangerous, lasers are even more dangerous
>don't let punks with crazy hair colors bully you
>girls need to know how to fight too
>>
>>93210896

They're nearly teenagers mate. Pretty much any shonen is going to be fine. Hell, even a lot of the Seinen anime out there would probably be fine, depending on what you consider acceptable levels of violence/sexuality to expose to younger folks.

They're at the age point when people start exposing folks to what they consider "acceptable levels" of maturity, based on the kid's personality and actions.
>>
>>93210913
This.

I watched aliens as like a 6 year old, and went as a xenomorph for halloween with one of those long planters painted black for the head, and a dracula fangs glued to a toilet roll for the little itty bitty mouth.

It was great.

Aliens might be most kid friendly though, mostly by virtue of being more actiony, and mom saving the day at the end.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit also works. Another favorite from being a kid.
Rango is a great kid friendly version of Chinatown but with desert critters.

Question for Fosteranon, do you have a library card or access to a library? I've started going more often lately and find that they can have a pretty decent selection of comic books (and hell regular books) too.

Fantasy Sports by Sam Bosma, and House of the Scorpion, come to mind. The latter is a sort of weird scifi tale about a kid who finds out he is a clone of his own dad, said dad is a criminal overlord who plans on harvesting his organs, to get all immortal and shit.
>>
You might want to get them some tablets or something. They will want to go online.
>>
>>93210402
Toss in Powerpuff Girls, Superman TAS, Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies, and some other more upbeat shows.

Maybe too many batmans for the kids, they might get confused. I would cut out one of them, doesn't matter much.
>>
>>93211346
Oh and ed, edd, n eddy, and if they are okay with subtitles maybe nichijou.
>>
For the girl
Show her miraculous ladybug
Maybe she'll enjoy it
Maybe give her the French version if she's okay with subtitles, the lip sync for the English one is pretty bad
>>
First of all, if possible, you're going to want to invest in at least a separate TV or be prepared to sacrifice at least a monitor, else you will never have your computer again.

Second, if you have a spare cheap PC or something, you may want to set it up as an entertainment/emulation center, once again, because if you don't, they're going to glue themselves to your PC.

Third, they're going to want internet capable devices at some point. The boy is going to start, if he isn't already, start jacking it daily, if not more often. That boy WILL get access to porn, even if that means sneaking onto your computer. I would imagine you probably don't want that. Make sure they have their own devices.

Finally, take all of this advice with a god damn grain of salt. You can try to prep, but you'll be way better off just having an honest to god talk with them about what they do and don't like. For all you know, you're about to inherit DudeBro and Caligirl and you're going to need to learn to play catch.

If they're old enough they might not like cartoons anymore.

Show the girl little witch academia, and show the boy my hero academia. They're good primers to see if they still like the concept of cartoons in general, or if they don't like it anymore.
>>
>>93211766
>Yeah but she's twelve, she won't notice.

Her young age only increases the risk that she'll grow up with her lipsync off. Everyone she talks to will be infuriated that nothing she says matches her mouth.

Honestly at that age it's hard to ballpark anything. When I was 12 everyone at school was watching Friends, Maury, South Park, early Family Guy, etc even though they're not kids shows. You might want to just set aside a couple hundred dollars and just ask them what they like to do.

There's certainly cartoons that are good and appropriate for that age but if they don't care about animation then it's almost pointless to bother acquiring it in advance.

OP here. Had a quick call with the parents to get a rundown on the kids

>boy gets into fights a lot at school, apparently got bullied a lot, which is weird cause he's apparently a very sporty kid. He seems really passionate about art, though they didn't specify what that entailed.
>girl got bullied a lot worse than her brother and is apparently traumatized by it, is very shy. Reads a lot of books at the library, though her parents don't know what it is she reads aside from one time the mom saw she was reading a book about nukes and the cold war.

Not sure what to make of it till I can talk to the kids themselves.

Any suggestions based on this new info?
>>
>>93210134

From the sounds of it, this is a family affair. Not child services, correct? If it is a child services dealy, get in touch with their case worker. Most of them will move mountains if the foster parent looks like they're going to give half a shit.

You have any other family members who aren't willing to help pitch in? Are they bringing any stuff with them? Can you even just flat out organize a phone call with the kids and ask them if there is anything in particular they like?

Anime and movies won't get you very far if they're not big TV watchers.
>>
>>93212081
They might both like comics more than cartoons judging by the sound of that. Though maybe not capeshit if they don't at least like the movies.

And I would generally get someone to talk to them, but I know the costs can be rough even if your insurance is good so that might be easier said than done.
>>
>>93212081

For the boy - Have some art supplies on hand. Artsy fartsy types will usually make due with whatever they have, even if it's not their usual style. Can't go wrong with a sketch pad, some pencils of varying fineness, and some colored pencils. You could expand out/get the right stuff from there. If you've got cash to burn, modeling clay is always fun too.

Find some good websites that steam professional sports and bookmark 'em for him. You're going to have to find a way to strike a balance with him so that he isn't constantly fighting, but also isn't letting himself get pushed around. Support him and make sure he knows you're on his side, but also make sure he knows that he's got to be able to make it through school.

As for girl - Not good that she's bullied, but the fact that she likes books means your life is probably going to be a lot easier. Make sure she has a library card, take her to the library frequently if its not somewhere she can get by herself easily.

She might be a history buff, or maybe she is beginning to get into a political/economics groove or maybe she's just all over the place.

Maybe try sharing some of your favorite Cold War era comics and make sure she has access to documentaries if that's what she digs.

Also, if she's been broken by bullies, probably worth trying to find groups that she might be able to associate with. Local history groups or whatever who would love to have some young blood and who she doesn't have to deal with on a peer level thing.

Also might be worth going over and talking to /tg/, they might be able to recommend some board games with themes that the kids might like and that will force you guys to interact a bit and learn about each other.

The Girl sounds like she might really love Twilight Struggle, as an example, if she's really a Cold War buff.

Remember, they're going to need to learn about you and how you work just as much as you need to learn about them and how they do.
>>
>>93212081

>Any suggestions based on this new info?

Well, apparently your choices right now are either going to turn these kids into functional members of society or outright terrorists.

If the boy is into art, roll with that. Figure out what his thing is, get him some supplies. Don't automatically assume; I remember hating it when my family learned I was into art and everyone got me the same goddamn Chris Hart anime book.

The girl is hopefully into history, not killing people. She might be one of those people who can legit watch documentaries and enjoy it.

Just be honest with these kids, saying that you don't know anything about what they're into but want to learn and help them be happy. They know themselves better than you, or their deadbeat parents who don't even know what their daughter reads.

Keep them from being shut-ins, too. Get the boy in some sport or art club, get the girl into some nerd shit like DnD.
>>
Hope you post another thread in a few months time
I wanna hear how this all goes
>>
>>93212081
Just talk to the damn kids, lad. They probably won't open up right away, but it's worth a shot. Also worth noting, if they're 12 then you're just barely at the troubled teen phase which is one of the hardest parts of raising kids.
Why don't you have any vidya? I mean you got a PC, Deus Ex and DMC4 run on toasters, you have no excuse
>>
You can always pick up a ps3 or 360 for cheap. May not be ideal but it's better than nothing. Don't waste your money until you talk to the kids though.
>>
Check first and see if it's something they'd be into, but see if your library has something like a zine or comic creation club. That covers art for the boy and maybe the girl can turn some of her interest in reading into writing (which is much easier to turn into a social activity). Creating something you can sell, trade or share opens up an entire field of options for meeting new people, and it gives shy people a reason for putting themselves out there.
>>
>>93210134
You could probably get some basic shows that appeal to all ages like Adventure Time, just to start out.

Then when they actually move in with you, your priority should be to help them feel comfortable and get to know them. Learn about what they enjoy and hate. If they let video games, maybe invest in a console. If they enjoy certain types of toys, do that. Don't smother them with all sorts of new crap, but don't just neglect them or go down the "oh kids love this stuff...right?" path.

Fuck man, that is some rough shit. Bad age for a "parent" shift too. Wishing you the best of luck. As far as recommended cartoons ask them what they like and get some "stupid" shit like animatics, looney toons, spongebob, etc. At that age most kids can watch the same shows over and over again as long they get to choose what they put on.

>tfw you will never be satisfied replaying the same VHS every three days.
>>
>>93210591
Cuck? He's doing society a favour, who knows what would happen to these kids otherwise.

I'm saying this from the heart - kill yourself.
>>
>>93212081
Anime wise: It's hard to pinpoint something, but like >>93211803 said, show them more basic stuff. Dragon Ball also works well for the boy, at least to see if he's still a more boyish boy. If he doesn't seem to like it, more lighthearted stuff like My Hero Academia will definitely let you know if he likes cartoons still or not. But considering he seems to be an art guy, he probably will.
By the way: for arty kids, make sure to get a notebook/notepad/looseleaf. That and a pencil combined with privacy will do wonders regarding his art. It'll let him express himself early on, and from what I remember (I was one of those kids myself at 12), it'll let him get out emotions privately.

As for the girl, I feel worried, but hopefully it's unwarrented. Most likely, documentaries and stuff should be right up her ally. The History Channel is a great source for that. I would also recommend pirating some live-action shows, stuff like Doctor Who or Star Trek would work. Maybe even older stuff like Chips or M*A*S*H. Seems like kids like that really like live action.
And don't forget Indiana Jones. That stuff is history-buff heaven, it would definately be exciting.
>>
>>93212081

If you find out the girl legitimately loves reading, I suggest buying her some kind of e-reader. They can cost anywhere from 30 bucks to 100+, which depending on your economic situation may be quite a lot, but if the girl devours books like I did at her age the ability to pirate books will repay itself in an instant. /lit/ has a tutorial on how to use the mIRC channel #bookz, which contains pretty much any book ever published unless you're looking for super obscure shit. I've heard that Amazon e-readers can be funky with their protection system and drm so I would avoid them.
>>
don't forget to take them to the library

local community centers are a thing too in more populated areas (don't know what your area is like)
>>
Although each child is different, I would bet that the kids are going want at least a certain amount of stability.

I'd also get prioritize shit that models self sufficency, because they're going to need to be able to hit the ground running and get into the workforce as there's not a lot of margin for paffing around.

Some of your adult oriented stuff may be OK.
