I always get way, way too detailed with my drafts. On the plus side, it usually means I just have to erase some shit for it to be the actual sketch I end up using, but y'know, the draft is supposed to be this quick, messy thing to get the general idea down. S'not supposed to be the final product.

It gets bad when I end up not liking what I've done, and want to start over, but already invested so much fucking time into it.

When I first started using a tablet I made soo many fucking sketchlines the initial sketch looked like a horrible mess that I'm embarrassed to look at now, but I got better with a ton of practicing exclusively on the tablet. Possibly use a stabilizer, that helped me to the point where I was able to disable it after a while.

I use Paint Tool SAI, so I can't really walk you through how to adjust it in whatever program you're using. Could just be that you press hard when you draw? If you do I would go for a less sensitive line width setting in your program. Sorry I'm not much help, I'm technologically retarded

When you start getting tired of it all, do what I do and focus on a portion of the body. The leg, the feet, hands, noses, whatever it may be. Take that and just draw it in multiple styles. Calvin and Hobbes, Looney Tunes, Flintstones, some anime, an artist you know. Do it in as many styles as you can think of, and in different angles and poses. It'll give you a break from the norm, improve your art by seeing and drawing multiple styles, and give you some thought on what to do next.

Oh, I gave up on sai pretty soon after using it as well. I just didn't care for it. Krita on the other hand feels a lot better to use. Not only is the UI a hell of a lot cleaner on it, it's brush toolbar is fucking brilliant. Right click that shit and have fun being able to smoothly switch brushes and colors on the fly, and swapping through different presets with no problem. I think the only major problem I have with Krita is some of the default shortcuts are kinda wonky, you'll need to fix that manually.

Just loaded it up to see what else Krita had going for it.

So it saves the colors you have used in your color wheel. The one you conjure by right clicking saves 13, the one on the right saves more than 19. That's interesting, I can see that being really helpful for painters.

The lines are amazingly crisp for inking, so much more so than Photoshops will ever be. It's a big reason why I keep using Krita, even if I wind up doing an image in Photoshop first.

This program is... weird when it comes to the eraser. It technically has two ways to do erasing, the first is hitting that 'E' button which toggles the erasing. Only now, it uses the brush YOU ARE NOW USING as the template to how it should erase. Really weird. Hit it again to return the brush back to drawing with colors like it was previously. The other way is to go directly to the brush selections (right clicking) and selecting the eraser you want to use. I have both a soft and hard eraser for usage.

It has a mirroring selection in easy use at the top, for both horizontal, vertical. And then there's the multibrush on the side toolbar. That is a strange one there, it's toggled by hitting 'Q'. Now you are drawing the exact same line in four corners of the screen.


If the other programs have these things at all, they do not make it clear from the getgo. Krita does.

Go for a certain genre to help, or possibly have a set of music you only listen to when you draw. That way when you listen to it, you associate that music with drawing and get into the mood. I remember this happening plenty of times for me.

Whenever I listen to Trivium now, I get in the mood to run or do something active. That one I enjoy. The one I don't is whenever I hear music from New Found Glory now I want to play Harvest Moon. Yes, I know, it's weird. Whenever I want to get in the mood for drawing, I listen to Bad Religion, Queens of the Stoneage, Infected Mushroom, or some music from a cartoon/game.

I just tend to not care, I mean I have my light on the ceiling but the shadows don't bother me too much. I mostly draw digitally anyways. If the shadows are really bad for you, get two different table lamps and set them up at different angles.

If I could make a recommendation? Try doing different expressions on your characters, they all seem to have the same face, that of a simple smile. Maybe pucker them lips up, or swerve them brows. You seem to be getting the medium down, just need practice with using different emotions.

here's a reference that I saved years ago, back when I couldn't draw muscles. I had totally forgotten about it until I looked through some old files and found it. I feel better about it because now I definitely have a better grasp on anatomy than back then. Just start drawing them, use the references to try and copy the picture. Even if it looks terrible, that's the beginning of practice. Then years down the line after you've drawn tons of anatomy practices you'll laugh at the old image you drew

Don't downgrade. Uninstall and don't look back. A lot of artists love sai but it's objectively not better. Less features, options, tools and brushes.

Photoshop is the best art program you can be using. The ONLY reason to use sai instead is if you find the learning curve for PS too intimidating or are just outright used to sai. At face value, Sai is better for linework, but PS does it better if you install Lazy Nezumi with it.

Sketching fast is a good skill to learn, though. If you get bogged down in tiny details and doing exactly the right lines during the sketch phase, the piece tends to lose a lot of flow.

Also Manga studio is bad but the 3D reference dolls are an interesting feature.

Here's a friend of mine who has been drawing since the old flipnote ds days. Some of her stuff gets thousands notes and has won countless local and i think a national competition once.
This always discourages me from drawing because I feel like I can never compare lol.

Eh, getting thousands of notes on a picture doesn't necessarily mean it's good, just catered to the right fandom. I drew something a couple years ago for Steven Universe when the fandom was starting to get big and it's sitting at 12k notes even though it's just a jokey sort of drawing. The competitions are cool though. When someone close to you shows promise in art, the worst thing you can do for yourself is discourage yourself from drawing instead of being inspired by said person. Sometimes you'll never be able to compare your art to the old masters, I know I sure as hell can't. But it doesn't stop me from drawing because it's something fun that I like to do. And when you decide to start drawing you don't need to post it online if you feel like you can't compare to others, draw for yourself and you'll get better.

I draw something, then I forgot what reference I used, I question if I did it as it is supposed to be, then erase what buggs me out, search for another reference, redraw, forget what reference I used, erase and redraw again, this could go on for 3 or more times!, in the end drawing is extremely dirty, the paper is to hurt! I don't care anymore and leave it as it is knowing anatomy is fucked up.

And yes I do have plenty of "how to draw" books, but they never helped me, to ambiguous, to limited, drawing from life and keep track of refeces is the only answer to me, I suppose is because I just can't visualize, its like having severe brain fog. As if I was computer with very low RAM.
