He's spent decades acquiring these talents, skills, knowledge and know-how, but there will be a time - soon - when those skills will be of no further use to him as his body fails him and old age sets in.

He wants those skills to continue to mean something after he's unable to use them. After he's gone. He wants to pass them on to someone who can use them so that it will have all been worth something.
