Did anyone ever update the "crying in Steven Universe" picture?

A character simply dying doesn't make something dark. it all depends on HOW they're injured.

I'm sure this is bait, but fuck it. This might have hit harder if he wasn't resurrected about a minute later. Adventure Time has often resurrected characters as well, but at least they let the viewers believe those characters were gone for good for a few episodes.

Jasper's corruption was darker, but I wouldn't even go so far as to say that scene was actually dark.

I still liked this moment but death doesn't really mean anything anymore.
>>
>>93198614

They are confused and tormented creatures, anon.

>>93198507

It would have been dark if the episode had ended with Steven cradling Lars' dead body in his arms, crying.

The one time it was 100% appropriate for him to weep.

End it with the shot of a tear falling on Lars' cheek... go to black... if you want to be a sick asshole do the 'star pop' ending...

...and NEXT episode we do the glowing thing.

....No. Now that I think about it that is bad. The cliffhanger is enormous, the pay-off too easy. Hmmm. It's almost as if they have meetings about this sort of thing.
>>
>>93198979

Lars is a boy, not a man. He's built like a twig. And what do you think kills people that are caught in explosions? He was likely dead before he hit the rock at all.

...But they didn't. The Homeworld gems did, and technically speaking they were saving the life of what they assumed to be a rebel Crystal Gem.
Remember she was already cracked, and Homeworld does not have the means to heal a cracked gem.

It was kind of dark that Pearl stuck her in her own storage dimension and apparently never wondered whether it perhaps was a person (forgivable, though, since many gem devices also use non-sentient gems) so Lapis was stuck on her own for fifty centuries.

...THAT aspect was kind of dark. All things considered she is amazingly well-adjusted.

Imagine being trapped for centuries on a foreign world, wanting nothing but to go home. Having someone finally free you from what would seem like eternal prison, only to be attacked by the supposed freedom fighters who've acted as your wardens for your torment. Finally escaping only to find that the home you've been dreaming has morphed radically, and later be taken prisoner again by the very arms you fled into. Being forced not only to return to the planet that is your hell but to assist in the attack of the one being that has showed you the slightest bit of compassion or kindness.

Too bad the writers aborted this entirely.

what I liked about this scene is that it emphasized how frail humans are. you can argue about how "dark" it was, but the fact that he fell a few feet and hit his head and bam, just like that, dead.

It did a good job of portraying just how fragile we all really are. and I think that's where the "darkness" comes from, not that it's twisted, or brutal. just the unexpected realism of a small accident killing your friend.

Then he got super powers and the moment was gone. back to the usual goofy gay bullshit.

the only thing that could be called even remotely dark in SU (even taking into account it's a children's cartoon) is that episode where Amethyst turns into Rose, simply for how fucked up that is given all the implications.

maybe, MAYBE something like Lapis being cracked and confined to a mirror for ages or the deal with bismuth could qualify but very minorly. Lars could have been if his "death" was better than "snapped his neck on a rock"-tier, lasted for more than 1 minute and he wasn't brought back pink and with powers. oh and if he wasn't a shit character.

and yet people survive shit far worse than that. sure, you could theoretically die by falling from your own goddamn hight. just tripping could be lethal but offing someone like that hardly demonstrates "how fragile we are" in any meaningful or impactful way. it just feels stupid.and in this case it feels unsatisfying since he just gets resurected instantly.
it would have been much better if he got some sort of permanent injury (scar excluded) such as losing an arm, an eye or something like that.

this honestly just felt like a sorry attempt to generate hype/attention by "killing" a character and as a plot device to make Lars have some progression and not be completely useless.

>>93198507
Every single damn conflict in Steven Universe is solved by either the supporting cast sacrificing themselves, Steven Crying and somehow convincing warmongering rocks, or the enemy being too stupid to live.

These rocks want to GENOCIDE his entire planet, but all he does is cry and watch as everyone else around him actually advance the plot. The ONLY thing special about Steven is his powers.
>>
>>93204076
>as a plot device to make Lars have some progression and not be completely useless.

Is that really so wrong?
It added a lot of world building in terms of the nature of Steven/Rose's powers and gave Lars a lot of room to grow as a character. It also gave insight to Lion in terms of backstory.

The death accomplished a lot of things, much more than just having a character lose a limb or something that will ultimately be superficial.
>>
>>93204785
We already knew Steven could heal people, logically speaking but would make sense resurrection fell into that realm.
>>
>>93204785
>lose a limb or something that will ultimately be superficial.
in a cartoon where the status quo rarely changes for long, someone permanently losing a limb is pretty significant, on top of making the whole "these people are in danger because of me" aspect all that more vivid. not to mention Sadie's, Lars' and Lars' parents' reaction to it would have potentially been stronger, at least stronger than their reaction to "now he's pink and doesn't eat.

also, it didn't really give us much in terms of the nature of his powers, it just gave us insight on what lion is and how he came to be. as for Lars' development, it isn't a problem in and of itself but it felt rushed. in a couple of episodes he goes from an unlikeable angsty anoying pussy to a more assertive and confident guy who's willing to be left behind for Steven's sake. all because they had a chat, cried a bunch and he got res'd. this is the kind of progression you build over a whole arc sometimes a whole series, not 4 goddamn episodes.

appart from how it might have messed with their fusion Connie might have been a better candidate for this. hell she barely participates in any important fights despite the whole "learn to fight to protect steven and keep Rose's sword" thing and instead they use fucking Lars.
>>
>>93198507
Dark is when your mother chooses immortality over raising her son. Dark is a father abandoning his son so he can end the world. Dark is being a six year old girl walking in on her insane mother hanging herself.
>>
>>93204785
>>93205267
this is another problem with this whole thing. look at how many powers this fucker and his mom have. floating, giving life to vegetables and such, healing/healing gems (something even diamonds can't do apparently), resurecting people and having them connect to a pocket dimension, bubbles, and anything else i'm forgetting.

holy shit. either the whole Rose was actually a Diamond in disguise thing is real or they better have a very good explanation for RQ having all that when most gems only have 1 major ability.

Despite what most television, movies, comics, and so on would have you believe, the human body is actually incredibly fragile and very easily damaged by sudden-force impacts.

The problem is the issue of healing had already been introduced. Plus Lion. And they couldn't exactly have Steven heal him after several days. It had to be within the ''resuscitation limit" otherwise he really would have god-like powers.

Steven is mentally and physically 8. So many retards here criticize him based on his age, when they don't even bother checking the facts.

>>93198614
I mostly see SU fags do this. they also make threads asking if any other shows have as deep lore. both of which are not exclusive to SU, but for some reason they're convinced it is.
>>93198639
also this. just because something aimed at a young demographic does something mature or dark doesn't make it inherently good or special. if anything that used to be the norm with cartoons.
>>
>>93206023

He's just turned 14, he's mentally and physically 8 and only God knows how old he really is given that his mother was thousands of years old and still frequently behaved like a kid (I mean, it seems all the gems are emotionally immature, aren't they?); plus his dad was also a giant manchild.

It's nature conspiring against him.

wow, that only took like 50 filler and townie eps.

Any fall over three feet can be life-threatening, especially if you fall on your head, back, or buttocks.
>>
>>93206335
interesting. Does it still air regularly or was it another bomb and hiatus for 6 months?
>>
>>93206203
This is how the show works. The plot moves in sudden lurches then falls asleep again for another 20 episodes. Just gonna have to deal with it

And then left. Face it, nothing is going to happen for another half season
This is our fate. Our punishment.

He's brought back to life and he only was brought and died to begin with so the writers had an easy way out of the story so they could go straight back to the status quo.
Can't wait for more townie episodes revolving around feelings with absolutely no magical flair as used to be part of the show, just talking and crying, no magic, no gems, no nothing.
Boy has the show lost all punch, it's such a boring mundane show now, you occasionally get a look at the diamonds but they always find a way to go back to everyday life and the status quo.

Bomb and hiatus. Woe is us.

I imagine Sadie and Lars' parents might have something to say. I mean, he's gonna look Lars up every other day or so, isn't he? Maybe not for food, but to get him clean clothes every now and then.

Oh, man. I want this so badly...
>>

Nope, the reason why they wrote in he doesn't need to eat is so they don't have to keep needing to check in on him

I know, it's pathetic. Rebecca Sugar wants to be the western equivalent of Hideki Anno.

I'm a fan of Evangelion, but I admit there are some faults in its execution.

He raises a point, there's nothing dark about Pikachu crying over Ash's, I mean Steven crying over Lars' body and resurrecting him.

But you can't do dark in kids shows because the mothers will scream and piss rage out of their baby-ruined twats that someone would inform their developmentally stunted twelve year old that people die.
>>
>>93205414
They probably made Rose Quarts gems to powerful and then assumed they could control them.

When one went rogue, they made sure none of the others followed suit. After Rose shattered Pink D I guess they wanted to ensure that Rose Quarts gems couldn't do anymore harm despite it only being one and bubbled all the others.

Rose isn't a Diamond but has the influence of one and many more powers than the gems we've seen so far. (I don't know how she would deal with an Aquamarine stasising her though.)

So I've started marathoning Steven Universe at the request of a friend. I'm over half way through season 1, and I have to ask: why is Lars so hated? I mean, yeah, he's kind of a dick, especially compared to the rest of the cast, but he always receives comeuppance for his actions.

I find Onion to be worse. He steals Steven's Ranger Guy, uses the duplicator to straight-up attack the Crystal Gems, and then gets off scoot-free with a "You don't get to spend much time with your dad?" sob story.
>>
>>93215100
