Here's that environment test I posted near the end of the last thread. Would art like this be satisfactory for a "quest" style webcomic?
>>93196046
Your style is appealing to my CN/Nick tastes.
>>93196052
Very nice.
>>93196104
Thanks! Edgy cartoons of the 90s and early 2000s were definitely a huge inspiration.

>Glad to see you started proofreading, man! You've become better at paneling too. If you make tighter drawings it's gonna look beautiful.
I know that you are being nice. But, What is last comic you saw me with misspellings? I always make sure that there is no misspellings.
What is the recomended level of edgyness?
>>93196932
A while ago. It's not just the spelling, the dialogue reads better too.
>>93196987
Oh yeah!
I need to work on the flow of the dialogue. Thank you for pointing it out.
>>93196695
Daaaamn I messed with it a bit and that helps the clarity tremendously, thanks. I hadn't really realized how needlessly dark I was making things. I think my tablet may show things lighter than other monitors.
Also added a new character because why not.
>>93196959
It really depends on execution. My character Villithist here is the epitome of edginess in the form of a mcfarlane/giger abomination. BUT in the story his ridiculously edgy demeanor and appearance is acknowledged and poked fun at for how childish it is to act that extreme.
I'd say going by your chart Ryuko is around the point where it's hard to take seriously and Shadow is when it's impossible to take seriously.
>>93197260
Happy to help! Great job there.
Reached that intimidating situation when you have one empty panel and everything else almost ready for color...

That is what happens.
I mean, we could talk about our comics and stuff.
Left are twin MCs for RPG plot, right is MC for afterlife plot.
I'm really new to writing. I just want to worldbuild and draw kinda self-contained stories. I think I don't have what it takes to sticking to a long dedicated plot. Maybe some introduction plot, maybe interesting arcs, but most of what I can think of are daily life snippets.

>>93217243
Actually this >>93217281
You learn from observing and then trying to copy what you observed. Doing so with other styles is not different from drawing from life. You learn what they are doing right and then you use that new knowdledge for your own style.
You have to make sure you copy good art though, if you try to copy Liefeld unironically you are not on the best start.

hey old liefeld was good, he just lost his way after waking up one day and realizing he was liefeld. he was never the same after that
>Spunky young lass Roxanne Robinson is an archaeologist at Haven City College, an interest she picked up from her late grandfather
>On an investigation down-under in the ruins of the ancient Australian empire she discovers a scrappy young wild-child named Rex, with a connection to "the dreamtime"
>This connection not only gives him latent spirituality and a sixth sense, a profound understanding of spoken language, which is useful for her purposes
>The two go on globe-trotting adventures for the mysterious, both of the ancient world and things that never left, but were only hidden
>Setting is essentially Crimson Skies + Indiana Jones + Tin Tin

There's a militarized, vaguely communist/nazi-types as a reoccurring villains that sometimes beat them as dig-locations and the like, if that's what you're asking.Yes, there is. He's a Tarzan type who requires civilizing, which means both negative and positive reinforcement.
>>93217876
>positive reinforcement.
>>93217407
>Doing so with other styles is not different from drawing from life.
I have to disagree. While you can learn a lot from other people's artwork, especially if you want to draw stylized art yourself, it is not the only thing you should study. Limiting yourself to only studying other artists means you'll pick up all their mistakes and bad habits as well. Just bite the bullet and do some life drawings, figure sketches and anatomy studies are good for you, I promise.
>>93217922
It's just mar-mite and pets, Anon!
>>93217933
I never meant to disregard life drawing, I was more on the side of doing both. Not just stick with one method but try more than one at least once. Sorry if I wasn't clear there.
>>93217752
Being Liefeld is hard.
>>93217243
Practice, practice and more practice.
Loomis's anatomy isn't actually very helpful for beginners I'd recommend Hampton:
https://archive.org/details/FigureDrawingDesignAndInventionMichaelHampton
A lot of gitting gud is just mileage. Draw every day for at least an hour or so. Grind some studies, quickposes and croquis cafe are good figure drawing resources:
https://www.quickposes.com/en
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOq-SnwbtX9u231janaHRCo3tcTWshKML
Remember to learn things that are actually applicable to your artistic goals. If you want to draw comics, invest some time into learning backgrounds and visual storytelling as well.
>>93217876

how's your art? a comic like this will require a certain style to work, in my opinion.. i mean not a single one, but I have 5 or 6 in mind that would be appropriate
>>93217933
they're different, but they aren't of different value. most people aren't interested in drawing real life with all of its mistakes and bad habits. they want the clean perfection of 2d

look you dont fix a culture by killing people, you do it by luring them into a better culture. it's not as if there's ever anything wrong with a race.. and if there is, you fix it via breeding. just flood them with your good genes til they're awesome.
>>93218317
stop continuing your course of action despite my protests
I'm trying to draw Guro porn. still YEARS away from being able to draw it well enough to be worth posting. But because of these threads I've been able to at-least recognize my "artistic goals"
the style I'm looking for requires a strange mix of
Beauty - the characters have to be beautiful, both male, female, and horrible nightmare abominations
Realism - the guts, and anatomy need to be more or less correct. With out this there is no guro, just splashes of red drawn across mickymouse
Cartoony - the characters being mutilated cannot be too real looking or the art becomes hard to fap to
>>93218403
interesting. you want realistic gore but you don't want realistic people? well, I'd suggest you study the likes of Franken Fran. That comic manages to be likeable even if you don't like gore, because it's not so much gory as ... medical horror comedy. The kind of thing you know the artist studied surgery for real
>>93218403

Well, if I can get all the ideas together and her to storyboard, I'd like to make it happen. This is my first time posting here.
Other ideas:
>Rex (the boy) is the son of a stranded explorer and mysterious woman who may or may not have been the last of the ancient aussies
>Roxanne has to civilize Rex and get him used to interacting with others, especially in urban life.
>She's a red-head with a ponytail vaguely resembling a foxtail. She wears a pilot's jacket and indeed pilots a biplane.
>There should be a scene where they're on a train and he wants everything off the food-cart as he has no concept of money and has never seen so much food in one place at once
>>93208216
the characters lack appeal imo. clean line though
>>93212284
this has potential. needs an extra step 2 become genius tier though. meditate on suffering and meet with the wise masters of the world. don't stress it (more dynamism and pottery in panel layout)
>>93218502
>pilot's jacket and biplane
stop, I can only get so erect
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I don't have much more than some concepts of the main characters, but I could use the criticism.
>D&D universe, but set in what would be the modern day.
>A trio of gnolls who try to be evil for no reason other than because the book from The Great Gygax said they were.
>In reality, they're just tryhard idiots who manage to both be pathetically ineffective at doing anything actually evil, and yet still unintentionally cause mayhem wherever they go.
>Occasional butting heads with a group of adventurers who, despite being the "heroes" consist entirely of the That Guys you have at your gaming table.
>Trials and tribulations of the day to day life of a world where getting your skeleton ripped out by an unearthly horror is pretty run of the mill, seen through the eyes of some rowdy idiots.
Thoughts?

Or something is wrong with your head, I don't know. Everyone naturally improves after drawing a lot.
>>93219761
The art is good but the storytelling is all off. The panels and the actions within the panels should be leading the eye through the page. Having the speach bubble from panel 3 cross over with the first panel confuses the reader.

On a related note, what's your opinion on references? I think there's a fine line between paying hommage and ripping off and it's pretty hard to make it natural or give the reference a purpose within the context of the story, so they suck pretty often. But they're so fun to do...

Just a Suggestion: Instead of the "Tritt der Armee bei" do a recruitment poster in the style of the famous Uncle Sam one - but with Bismarck saying "Ich will dich für die Reichsarmee!"
So I have notes, character concepts, a loose plot etc... But how do you know when and where to include twists or spice up your plot?
Do you choose an interesting twist and apply it to your story? Do you just work on the script and try to let it happen naturally? How do I make my story not boring

oh boy, good luck to you.
Ironically, if your art was better, this could be pretty popular I think.
The last two bubbles are very good and the idea of using speechbubbles like panles is interesting. Work on the first four black bubbles, they writing is a bit too lofty there and Comes across as silly. Tone it down just a Little bit and it will be perfect.
>>93225369
I usually have an interesting Setting or character that I want to show. I put them on a rough layout and then think about how to get from Point A to B and fill in the gaps. If I have a character worked out well their dialogue and Actions emerge naturally.
I recommend Stephen King's (may /lit/ forgive me) autobiography if you're new to writing. It's entertaining and provides some practical Story-telling advice.

>>93225954
except for the chilling out, which is not what happened. I was advocating chilling out, whereas Nessie laid down the law, like any good mod when you cross the line. and if that's the line, then I'm out. Because if I can't tell someone they're being overly cautious to the point of self-censorship, and if I can't get into a mildly heated argument about the ridiculous idea that bikinis could ever, ever be considered nsfw, then.. yeah, that's not a good discussion place for me. because if I stick around I'm just gonna keep arguing and ruining your good time. If you find you have to hold your tongue for 8 out of every 9 posts, you're in the wrong place.
>>93225862
What do they need the animals for if they can photosynthesize, and don't have mouths?
I think your line work is pretty smooth! Do you construct your figures at all before using a pen, or do you start with step 2 and draw the whole owl?
The figures at the bottom-right are hard to understand. I know that one of them is supposed to explain how this creature talks, but I don't understand the transition between the top and the bottom. Not entirely sure what right-most bottom - a hand maybe?
I'll read anything, but personally I become attached to the characters. If the characters are good (in terms of what they do, how they approach problems, their interactions with their surroundings and other characters, dialogue), then I can forgive a generic plot, boring backgrounds, and boring panel work. The writing must be good.

I sometimes do doodles but always use a pen.

Yeah I noticed I was doin' that. Trust me, I was holding a lot in. It just wasn't a good fit, but had to give it a shot.
>>93226091
>I'm not sure what's going on there either. Is it a comic? Designs?
That's just doodles, mostly character designs.
It's about a sorcerer living in a Floating Castle doing sorcery stuff: turning a teddy-bear into a servant, encountering Monsters and so on. At one Point he gets stabbed and bleeds so much that his Castle flows over and the blood rains down like a waterfall.
Never seen gravity falls, I mostly take my Inspiration from films, random stuff and occasionally manga.
>>93226271
Consider using constructions lines to help give you smoother and more confident looking lines. At first it seems like a waste of time, but it helps keep your art clean and your designs consistent. After a while you can drop the construction process.
>>93226433
I think your castle has a very similar silhouette to a spaceship. Maybe some embellishments would help to really drive home the fact that this is a castle.
>>93226334
>tfw can't change my lineart and my style is easily recognizable
>>93226804
>similar silhouette to a spaceship
That's intentional.
The Castle is going to look like a flying saucer but made of glass and Stone. On top where you usually find the Cockpit there's a garden and in the centre a Rotunde (don't know the english word - Looks like the capitol in Washington but with less layers and columns)
>>93226986
ah yeah we call that a rotunda.
Hey /hyw/, my job pays for 25k in college so I'm thinking of going for some sort of art degree since it won't put me in debt. I've always thought of art degrees as a meme, but if I'm not paying I might as well do something I enjoy.
That being said, I've been considering starting a webcomic on the side. I've also been considering the possibility that if it becomes popular enough I could move onto patreon and eventually bring it to life through animation. Or at least garner enough sway and portfolio work to move to a studio as a storyboarder and work my way up.
Is this a realistic plan?
Pic vaguely related; style I've been toying with as I get used to a tablet.
>>93227171
all i can say is read the reviews from people who've gone to the college of your choice.. because the reason nobody can agree on the value of an art degree is that some schools are great and some are terrible
you aren't gonna get much for 25k though.
It's a realistic plan for sure, but not as realistic as, say, learning a trade and getting a normal job. Something you don't hate, that doesn't stress and tire you out so badly that you can't do your comic on the side.
Pretty cool style
Some layouts I drew this week. Anyone else have the tendency to draw more panels on a large piece of paper and less on a small one?
>>93227249
we certainly work within the boundaries of what we have.. the few times I work on paper, I find I'll start drawing smaller and smaller as I feel the urge to conserve
>>93227222
Oh, I'm fully aware it isn't the most profitable thing. But I sort of made a choice to actually try and make something to enrich people's lives over my bank account.
And top be fair, I most likely only have the grades for community college. I'm confident once I have training for real I can make a portfolio that will speak for itself.
>>93227367
If that's your motivation, then you'll go far. but just keep in mind there are ways to get trained other than college. There are definitely lots of options to consider but your plain is a valid one

On one hand the art feels very sterile and the style of humor is literally McFarlane (plus "Hitler dropped out of art school" is a pretty overplayed gag imo), at the same time the characters are likable enough to make the joke work anyways, and I do want to see more of this to get a better idea.

>>93217243
SHIT ARTISTS GET THE FUCK OFF MY THREAD REEEEEad the /ic/ sticky dude, seriously. Loomis will make your construction better but you need to study work from life and images to get better at drawing people and shit. In order to get better at THAT you need to first get better at sight drawing, for which you'll need Keys to Drawing. Work through that at like an hour a day pace and you'll see your studies start to have more of an impact, both from life AND from Loomis. Also the first three Draw a Box lessons will help you a lot with pencil control, perspective, drawing circles/ellipses, and box construction. If you don't get it at first don't get discouraged, just do a couple exercises a day as warm up practice.
>>93227851
there's some rick and morty in there.. i'd love to see what got IDd as kim possible style though, seems like a stretch unless you changed a lot

Speech balloon tails are rather wide, especially in panels 1, 3 and 5; they should taper along their length. The bases should be about the same width as the connectors in panels 1 and 2.
Speaker in Panel 2 is Connor, in panel 1? Maybe have a tail leading off the lower balloon that points to Connor in panel one and breaks the panel border.
>apparently like 99% of what matters is just having characters people like, with character interaction carrying basically any setting as ancillary.

>>93233732
stark black and white is a tough thing to pull off, at least one shade of gray makes things a lot better...
but in this case, that would mean logically you'd wanna make the sky gray and change the clouds to white. and then you'd have a ton of other white-shaded-to-gray and gray-shaded-to-black stuff to worry about.. I wouldn't blame you if you didnt want to
i would suggest though that you may keep it binary and just turn down the contrast a little. what if the white was light gray or the black was dark gray or blue
>>93233732

My friend and I had an idea for a Marvel Comics AU called 8-Track Marvel - Reimagining of the Marvel Comics universe as a 70s period piece with Lovecraftian themes
Ancient elder gods and cosmic forces are breaking into our physical plane (called 616 by SHIELD), causing various tears in reality where space and time are warped (how many characters gain their powers)
Captain America is from the Revolutionary War, a legendary soldier who fought for the Colonies' independence and was rumored to have punched King George himself in the face.
In the year of the American Bicentennial (1976), he mysteriously reappears from a patch of New England forest that was in fact a time-space anomaly. As a result of exposure to these energies he cannot age.
Spider-Man gains his powers from the symbiote and has a techno-organic costume, kind of like the Guyver. SHIELD attempts to clone the symbiote but finds that it will not obey anyone who isn't Peter, leading to 8TM's version of the Clone Saga.
Black Panther is an Idi Amin style dictator that stages a military coup in southern Africa, forming a new nation that he dubs Wakanda, distributing fake history and propaganda with the help of SHIELD. Looks and sounds like Big Man Tyrone
>>93237824
>Looks and sounds like Big Man Tyrone

Tony Stark and his Stark Industries profited heavily off the Vietnam War. He has plans drawn up for the Iron Man armor, but doesn't actually don it until much later in the story. He and Bruce Banner are friends, and Tony is partially responsible for the events leading to Banner becoming the Hulk.
Dr. Strange is the head of SHIELD’s paranormal investigation division
Scarlet Witch is Dr. Strange's apprentice, meeting him as a young girl on his return from the far East. She studies the ways of magic hoping to one day rescue her brother Pietro from a dimensional anomaly that opened up in Eastern Europe (Latveria?).
The Punisher (Frank Castle) was a Vietnam War veteran who served in the same unit as Johnny Blaze. Johnny and Frank were forever changed by their experiences in Vietnam. Frank came to the conclusion that the world’s problems would never truly be solved unless he took them into his own hands, becoming a vigilante PMC who eventually takes over the Baja California and makes it his own nation.
The Fantastic Four were astronauts on the last manned mission to the Moon.
Black Widow, Wasp and Ms. Marvel are “Tony’s Angels”
Wolverine is a very minor character in this universe. He is SHIELD's janitor who is surprisingly unfazed by all the weirdness that goes on. He doesn't really fight, he only uses his claws to open beer cans.

They usually have one of these behaviors.
User 1

The comments like cover yourself are coming soon.
Why? Are Muslims wearing burka writing them?
User 2
Those (always the same) who comment under each page as it comes out with It sucks or similar phrases in a negative way.
Why do they follow him if he does not like it?
User 3
Those who comment on every page with I feel disturbed or emotionally disturbed or similar things.
What??? Does not happen anything strange.
User 4
Those who comment that you have to close the webcomics because it sucks.
Do they really believe that one follows what they say?
I leave maximum freedom not censoring negative comment and other users usually respond to negative comments to defend the webcomics.
I would like to know your experience and if even your negative comments follow some patterns of behavior similar to or not to my own.

>>93217281
that guys correct
your art style should be based off all the things you like in one
you like how one artist draws eyes? take it
you like how another person draws mouths? take it
do this for everything and soon you will have your own style
eventually over time this will mold into YOUR style as you get more comfortable with recalling things from memory
this is what a lot of artists (if not ALL) do
kerbump
>>93217243
>>93243607
>>93217281
Actually that can screw you over in the long term.
You need an understanding of why an artist does something in order to learn something from it. Basically learn the basics like perspectives and figure drawing first otherwise you'll be stuck with habits that are hard to break.
Trust me, the aforementioned 'steal from other styles' was how I initially learned to draw and I regret it.
Because I'm so used to drawing a stylized form of eyes or noses, there were certain perspectives that I had problems with. A problem with one part of the body can lead to you moving other parts to other places and making a disproportionate figure. Having a bad foundation lead to mistakes in the art or it not feeling right. Then you have to rebuild that foundation in order to move foreword because everything you've learned holds you back from properly understanding how things flow and move on a page.
It's like building a house on an uneven framework.
My advice to you is basics first. And draw a lot. and I mean A LOT. I've been doing so for years and I still have a lot to learn/relearn.
Minimum canvas size (pixels) that I should be working in for a hypothetical print run?
>>93195859

>>93245994
What's your physical print size?
Produce your work at 300-600 dpi for print.
Pixels = dpi X print size.
>>93245994
Decent modern software should let you set up your canvas in inches/millimetres and dpi, so you don't need to think of dimensions in terms of pixels at all.
Identify and work out your final print size. This should ideally be a standard size and format to avoid problems in the long run.
Print ready artwork should be 300dpi minimum. Your drawn pages should be ideally 600dpi or higher.
The only time dimensions in pixels is important is when scaling down for web display.
>>93243555

>>93245994
3000 x 3882. that's assuming the same aspect ratio as an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. but remember to leave edges for 'bleed' (why the printers cant just do this themselves I have no idea)
Larger than that would be great, but no smaller than that (8.5 x 11 x 300 dpi is a bit on the small side)
>>93247700
my goddamn sides. also woo open robe
>>93247733
What make dpi a meme?
Do printers ask for work in pixels?
8.5 inches X 300dpi = 2550 pixels.
11 inches X 300dpi = 3300 pixels.
There, question answered, but only for 8.5 X11 paper.
The standard American comic book is about 6.625" X 10.25" and other countries will vary according to THEIR standard.
A printer will print exactly what you give them. They assume you know what you're doing and if it seems 'wrong', then either YOU made a mistake or YOU have a very good reason for doing it like that.
If you're going to work for print, then it's a good idea to know about how things get printed.
>>93247971
>>93247733
Woah woah, let's be civil. But yes I was looking for pixel size because I plan to be working on an iPad (yeah, yeah...) And I need to see if this program will let me work at a big enough size.
>>93247493
Shrinking down to web size is also a concern. I want to ideally work in a way where I can see the final page, so I know I didn't make the text/details too small. Is it a bad idea to work at 2500/3300 ish? Should I be going double that and scaling down? What's the practical benefit?
Thanks to all
>>93247752

love the style, man. You gotta tumblr? I was in the same boat for a long time. Not confident in my writing and ability to pace out an epic story, but really interested in making a comic.
Then I found a writer that was interested in working with me and the vague concepts I had (plus rewriting the ones I was set on to make the story work better).
Maybe someone out there will be willing to help once you get the vignettes on the web to introduce the characters/world? I had years of false starts with lazy goons before I found my penguin.
>>93247971
Yeah but you select the paper size (if the printer even offers different options), and whatever you made will get scaled down. As long as it's big enough, and the right aspect ratio, you're good.
>>93248142
Web size should be 1000 wide, or so. So you'll definitely have to save separate files for web display and for future printing / working size.

Maybe make the villain have some orange?
Blue's contrary color is orange so it could work better if you want to go for an opposites/contrast path. Red works too but it may bee too strong of a color and your mc already has red eyes.
>>93251665
hmmm, maybe. It's a bit difficult to gauge with her since she's intentionally supposed to not look very natural, so going for warmer orange skintones doesnt seem totally doable, but I can experiment. I was thinking some purples could work, cause you know, protag is red white and blue, antag is green and purple and black, it's an established thing. The background could also be bleeding into the overall tone.
pic related is what I'm aiming for as far as the look and vibe goes.
>>93251653
yeah, figured I should give it another shot. I'm actually making two webcomics at the same time, one that's scripted and traditional and has flat colors and more of a regular hero's journey
vibe, and this one, which is experimentation and trying to cram in a lot of taboo stuff to try and make something that kinda pushes boundaries for how far out a webcomic can get.
>>93251812
>protag is red white and blue, antag is green and purple and black
>protag has primary colors -and white- while antag has secondary colors -and black-
Hey that works too. Yeah maybe some purples can do the job. Maybe try some yellow too, even if it breaks the secondary color scheme, yellow is related to stuff that looks sick like green does.
>>93251923
I could probably change her sweater to be purple pink ish. Her hair is supposed to be yellowish bone white, might've used too much white. maybe some more yellow on the skin? not a lot of room for it with all the black.
Maybe sickly yellow eyes?
>>93250099
ive made another!
>>93251978
Yellow-ish scleras probably. It both shows that there is some sickness on the character while also adding more crazyness.
>Her hair is supposed to be yellowish bone white, might've used too much white
Ah damn idk how I missed that the hair was already yellow. Although yeah it feels like it has a bit too much white.

why is learning to draw so hard? how do mangakda do it?
>>93253395
I have to agree on the part of not being able to see how a nip progresses in their art
>>93230136
I'll look into that. I use Indesign CS2 to letter the pages, and you sometimes have to go with odd shapes to have a point at the end. If there isn't a good way to change it, maybe I should finally consider switching to Manga Studio 5.
>>93237916
I'm not sure what you mean. That I'm going too far with mouth expressions? Or that I need to have more variety?
>>93254189
I mean I've only seen this one image so it might not even be a problem but it's the ^U mouth shape
>>93254189
At least take a look to see how it's done in MS5/CSP. I'm not that familiar with Indesign, but I'm guessing they're vector curves? Tails are essentially just a triangle with two curving sides and a short base; the key part is getting a uniform curve on both sides.
Looking at the page again, the balloon in panel 5 is nearly making a tangent with Connor's elbow; nudge it up a little to give it some space. Similarly, the balloon in panel 4 could move up and break the border (or move down away from the edge).
I hashed my pantheon out
Names are still kind of up in the air. I just had a big list and sort of distributed them to whatever sounded good at the time.
I'll go give it like a full colour treatment at some point

fixed and remixed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeUpsYrTr4s&feature=youtu.be
Hey guys, I have a question. I'm not really from here but a few months ago some people from here raided my Instagram account? I'm just wondering why, I don't think I did anything to provoke anyone. I mean nothing's happened since, but I'm just curious because I don't even make real webcomics.
started posting today, Maggot Treats!
https://maggotreatscomic.tumblr.com/
a slice of life about Stu, the IT guy (fly) with questionable moral fiber and a naivety regarding what is Predator and what is Prey in a world consisting of mainly insects, arachnids, mollusks, and sometimes small amphibiansi'd really appreciate the critique, this is my first whack ever at comics

You're being to ambiguous.
What do you mean you're not from here? You're not from /hyw/ or you're not from 4chan?
We don't have control over the whole site man. Did your stuff was posted in a /hyw/ or what?
>>93254649
It is a bit confusing on some parts because of how similar are some colors from the characters and the background plus the thin lineart, but the designs are really cute!
>>93254508
Those designs are neat anon. You are the one from the spider pantheon, right? Which aspects they cover? So far Kurvenne looks like war or similar.
>>93254587
I think I remember that. If I'm remembering right, it was just some random dickwad who was jealous of you for having Instagram followers. I don't recall much reason to it beyond that, and I think most of /hyw/ though the raid was pretty dumb anyways. I'm sorry you got slung out like that, that dude was just a piece of shit.

Well thank you, I appreciate that. Now at least I know it was bull. I don't hold a grudge against this place at all but it's good I cleared that up.
>>93255395
Kurvenne is definitely war.
Nescus is a god of seeing and knowing. Lascera attempted to smother him in web but his eyes are unstoppable.
K'thir is the god of the moon (which, in this situation, is physically broken.).
Likewise, Quellte is the goddess of the sun, and all things round and radiant
Venoure is a god of nature, and takes the form of the fungus and plants that the spiders live around.
Xirana is the goddess of control and mastery. She is clothed entirely in grasping hands.
Pemelle is the goddess of webbing, weaving and delicate craftmanship in general.
Lascera is Death, and dangles precariously over every one, and every thing, winding ever down.
Nexenvon is the master of science and mindcontrol. Around him are a trio of floating pheromone censers (which are used to mindcontrol the slave drones) and he is decorated in bioluminescent fungi. He is said to be the ascended form of the mortal spider that discovered the art, and thus saved the spider race.
Kurvenne is the prince of the art of swords, and wears a necklace of the palps of his enemies. At some point, one of the characters dresses up a lot like him.
I have no idea what Rothe is but they're something.
Possibly hunting. Possibly darkness

I'm slightly concerned but I also think I could learn a thing or two here from real artists! I'm going into animation school next year so maybe I should stick around. I can't offer quality work because I'm poor and don't have proper equipment, but do you think I could take requests easy here? I love drawing for people and maybe this /co/ place is just the place to do it.
>>93256693

>>93256825
> I also think I could learn a thing or two here from real artists!
I'm sorry, but most of the decent artists left this place a long time ago, and getting decent crit is a struggle on these threads. Take it from someone who's been here for a year now that these threads get stupid fast. People will be receptive to requests, but if you want to improve and learn /ic/ is a much better pace to go, they even have dedicated animation threads there (even if they have their share of assholes as well). If you just want to do requests, try /i/ or the the /co/ drawthread.
>>93256825

We have a lot of shitposters (or one really dedicated one), especially today apparently. Just ignore them.
The best thing you can learn from us is just how to be an artist on the internet, that's really all we can do.
As for requests, you'll want to go to catalog.neet.tv/co/ and ctrl-f "drawthread". that's where you do requests. I can vouch for those as a great way to get practice.

what would be a better schedule for updating, daily weekly, or dumps whenever a scene is ready?
>>93257733

yes, ovipositor, meaning where the eggs come from. it's a vagina. it's not a tail. Just saying, you don't put draw a beegirl with antennae on her tits, right? they go on her head. the stinger goes on your vagoo.

>>93239502
You're really good with making scenes *click*. The way you frame your scenes gives them a genuine cinematic feel to them, like I can imagine the show that would come from these storyboards. The way that you hold a scene and keep locations consistent while moving the camera, and your knack for making characters come alive with facial expressions and dialogue, really makes it easy to visualize how this would play out on the screen.
>>93247700
This joke I think better plays off your characters than just one off scene cut gags.

I actually drastically changed older designs to fit a more Modern cartoon style. I know if I kept my old style nobody would even give it the time of day.
Kind of loving the way it's coming out in this new style, though.
>>93262357
is this what it used to look like? not too different, could see this flying today too. either way youve gotta pitch shit like 6 times before you get in even if you do, so.. no worries about changing stuff
The anon with the Life and Death characters from a few days ago is back and now with more concepts to fill!
Well since the main idea is pretty much Life dealing with her existencial crisis on the job, it was always the idea to have more concepts to be running around on a sort of "company" that pretty much employs them. I made some -very- rough sketches for them.
From left to right on top are Space, Emotion and Mystery, with Time alone at the bottom.
Space and Time are not really busy on Earth but on outer space instead, since the universe is still growing and as such they need to move stuff in there, they are seniors. They still show up for some interactions and some shenanigans but they aren't so active on our mortal planet. Space is a serious guy who is always aware of where he is in and acts accordingly, while Time dresses in a nip-cyberpunk fashion because she is getting ready for "the future". She sometimes gets the times a bit messed because she sees past-present-future all the same.
Emotion is actually a "teenager" guy, being one of the youngest of the concepts. He dresses cutely mostly because it makes him feel good, but doesn't miss the chance to play around. It's very moody and prone to quick changes of temper.
Mystery is the manager as well as the oldest of the bunch. Pretty much everything about him is, well, a mystery. He is more concerned about everyone meeting the cuotas so he can act very cold.
These were the guys I originally thought of for the cast but I'm not sure if I should add more concepts into the mix.

Someone posted this mangaka documentary series on /ic/ and it is awesome. Here are two episodes I like, but you can see the other episodes appearing in the side bar. Seeing how different artists work is just amazing. It's also nice to see their personalities too.

Hey, nice to see you again. I just marathoned Vigor Mortis and it was a fun ride. Does demon guy have a keikaku? Can't wait to find out. The water Colors make it really appealing and you're always experimenting with paneling (many webcomic artists don't realize how fucking important it is, paneling is essentially to Comics what editing is to film)
Anyways, I have a question:
I recently teamed up with an Artist and we're currently developing the first chapter, she's drawing I'm doing the writing (including dialogue) and composition Layouts. Do you have any tips, experiences or advice concerning the work in a writer/Artist Team you can share? Thanks in advance.

The way we work (writer here) is I draft a chapter's worth of script, work on it (redrafting/tweaking/etc.) until I'm happy with it then send it over to the artist. She reads it, we confer and then we start producing it page by page. Artist will turn my ramblings into a rough, we discuss it, make any changes then go to pencils, inking, paint and finally scanning and adding the speech bubbles (whereupon I sometimes make a few final dialogue tweaks if I'm not quite happy with what I've written/the page feels like it needs it).
I'd say a key thing is to make sure you can both see the WIPs so stuff can be checked and adjusted if necessary as you go along. In our case, the artist sends me photos (but this is obviously even easier if you're working in digital).
What the fuck is the point of webtoons? Who/what does it cater to?
>hey it'd be cool if there was a webcomic site where there's a fuckload of pages on one screen so it's really hard to navigate and find certain pages!
>>93265363
that's why I don't read depressive or sad manga no matter how good they are.
Not quite the right thread probably, but I need a second monitor so I can finally start practicing with my tablet. I've never had a second monitor before and I'm not too tech literate. Is it just plug and play or do I need to make sure the new monitor will play nice with the old or whatever? It would just be for things like quickposes and reference images and the occasional bit of netflix.
>>93268386
You might be better off asking over on /g/: >>60937347
But it shouldn't really matter. I switch between my monitor and TV all the time and the worst that ever happens is my desktop icons getting disorganized. You can either set your display to only be on one screen, duplicate it so both screens look the same, or in your case you'll want to extend the display so that you can have different things on both screens.

it works for comics like Sword Interval where each update is a ton of pages, if I'm remembering webtoons.. and sword interval.. properly.
the worst is tapastic though. Even scrolling down the page always fucks up and glitches so you accidentally skip a page. and now it refuses to show you the latest comic every time you visit each comic's site, instead keeping your place from the last one you read
>>93268712
Yeah that was a good interesting
But also a kind of elaborate interesting. might be more than I can take in right away. I'm sure the comic will pace it out nicely, right?
>>93268775

>>93269930
> I'm sure the comic will pace it out nicely, right?
I hope so. I mean, well the main idea is to be slice-of-life and kinda gag-a-day in pacing, mostly because you can do as much with it. There will be some longer chapters with mini-stories but I don't want to throw powerlevel fights nor anything. Just the fun of the workplace with antro personifications (which is why I'm not sure if I should add more characters, since 6 people looks like a small workplace)
>>93270224
I would suggest using TV as your guide. I feel like The Office got a large-ish workplace cast perfect. You don't have to see everyone all the time, but every so often they all chime in. That, or Star Trek. All of them, really. They have a nice big ensemble cast but it's juggled just right

Well thank you. I was watching Animaniacs and forgot how much I loved Rita, though just making a comic about her doesn't really work since the big draw of those shorts is the singing. So let's go original.
>>93273425
>the big draw of those shorts is the singing
well,.. bernadette peters is a treasure, yeah, but as a kid I found that kinda cringey and embarrassing, but mostly enjoyed her attitude. she wasn't quite Slappy-tier but she had a feisty new york attitude and it was amusing
>>93273472
I was planning on keeping the personality fairly similar, though the idea's still in its infancy so far. I just thought not writing literally about Rita would be better since I'm taking out the singing and most likely Runt too. And keeping them in present day instead of using them as actors.

I absolutely love webtoons. The site could be formatted better, but I love the vertical comics. Webtoons are best viewed on mobile. You'll find they load fast and the scrolling is more ideal to me than flipping pages. So I would say they are more catered to mobile audience, but I also use my computer.
I think the vertical format of webtoons allows you make a comic that is more thematic, and reads almost like a storyboard. They come off as tv-like to me, almost like I'm watching an episode. And I've seen people add music too, and I like that extra element.
I do agree that the site and app could be formatted better though. Your reading progress isn't saved between PC and mobile, so that sucks. And, if you have a webtoon that is over 50 chapters long, it can take forever to find the chapter you want, and the thumbnails are often spoilers. Also, I do find it hard to discover people, even with their discovery feature.
>>93269897
I hate tapastic, the interface is really shit. I'm really disliking Tappytoon though, because the paywall is so fucking expensive. I really don't understand why they have the token system. People would be much happier buying a monthly subscription fee, and then being able to tip an author if they like.
Anons, I have all my story elements down, I don't think my art skill is too bad, I only have one question left.
How the fuck do I write a script?

Anon from before. How do you deal with pressure when in a combo? What are some problems that might arise? My partner's art is good and her style is extremely appealing so I think the only thing that could possibly fuck this thing up would be my writing. At what point did you decide to set up patreon and how do you communicate with your fanbase?
I realize these question may be a bit personal so it's fine if you can't answer them all.
>>93271753
Those are some great character designs, I especially love 1,2 and 4. Good coloring too.
It's a bit nitpicky to say but I think the names sound too generic, like your typical made up fantasy name, they don't really have a natural feel to them.
Unless there's allready a context for those names in the storry I'd recommend thinking a bit harder on it, maybe give them a uniting theme. These are spiders, so maybe derive some names from latin spider race descriptions? Maybe a bit obvious but not random...
>>93276163
That's a great page but I'm a bit worried about the character, she looks out of place. Is that intentional?
>>93276393
I just had sort of a long list of spooky fantasy names compiled like 3 years ago for a previous project that never went anywhere and just doled them out from there.
The only context i can think of is that Nexenvon was originally actually a mortal (kind of like a saint but is considered posthumously as a god), so i thought it worked that he sounded different to the rest of the names
I don't think I'll be bothered to come up with 10 completely unique names with a theme.
>>93276439
I suppose not. It was a style choice for the previous chapter, because of the environment, but now that she's in a different setting, I probably should see about changing things up so she won't be so out of place.
>>93274724
thank you. i try <3 glad you like it

>>93276163

>>93276263
You just need to have full and complete communication, just like any relationship. if you feel inadequate, let them know. just make it a statement, not emotional. if you ever have a problem with the art, just say so. anyone worth working with recognizes that the most desirable scenario is one where you tell them, even if that's slightly unpleasant
>>93276509
awesome. I compile names like that too
>>93252179
>>93251812
>>93250855
you shold really stop using black unless it's for either backgrounds or big masses, I really like the refrence you posted but if you look closely none of the colors of the children has black, black it's only to offer contrast in the background (I even doubt it's black but a really dark sienna)
I think you should work your colors in blocks rather than a shiton of black kines for shadows and you should really explore your colors if you want your characters to be color based since black is one of the ugliest ways to show value unless you know how to use it, good luck!
>>93276509
If find remarks like this really confusing, maybe because I'm really bad at drawing and it's so hard for me. 80% of a comic is drawing so if you invest all that time to make nice art, why not put in some extra effort to improve the language and dialogue that accompany it?
I haven't read your comic so this might not hold true to you but I find it really baffling how lackluster most webcomic artists are with their writing. It's the least time-consuming aspect of a comic and still it's neglected so much. Grammar errors, wonky dialogue, continuity errors and just plain bad writing everywhere. How frustrating.
>>93276590
lol its intentionally stupid. ive stopped trying to make big serious "official" comics, and now focus on silly comics for personal fun. its a lot more enjoyable to me than what i used to make. something i can always look back on and laugh at and smile
and yea i really wish people used dotted screentones more. looks so sleek
Can somebody help me out?
I'm trying to use a format like those gook webcomics where the page seems to continue endlessly perpendicular and the artist just sprinkels a panel on top occasionally and you have to scroll down super fast to see anything Happening. Like tower of god or what it's called...
I can't find out how the format is called or what program to use and I'm starting to feel like a fucking idiot since many of the people who make those kind of comics are apparently teenagers...
>>93276722
They're artists. They're good at art. They're not necessarily good at writing.
Either way, I just don't think that giving them fully themed names is really worth the effort. A random spooky name is fine. They're only names.
>>93276827
There's no special formatting tool/program most people just make their comics on a really long canvas to do it. Most people call that style of webcomics webtoons, afaik.
>>93276855
I see your point.
I think many webcomic artists are a bit delusional about their writing and don't think it needs improvement or even consider it unimprotant. You can make a comic if you can't write but you can't make a comic if you can't draw and that fact seems to shift opinions on writing unfavorably.
Maybe that's why we see writer/artist combos so rarely although they probably are a natural solution to some of these problems...

these challenges are really helpful to develop as an artists and to develop a style!
the challenge is to draw pic related in your style or make a character based on it!

>>93276968
>Maybe that's why we see writer/artist combos so rarely although they probably are a natural solution to some of these problems...
Writers control what is and is not drawn
Artists draw what they want.
There is inevitably going to be creative differences, which usually boils down to the artist having to draw things they don't want to draw.
>>93276920
Why are so many webtoons utter garbage? The average quality of webcomics in general is pretty bad, but webtoons are just terrible in an annoying, unapologetic way.
>>93277054
>which usually boils down to the artist having to draw things they don't want to draw.
Yes, but the comic will probably be better though. Wouldn't you rather make something good than have your way?
I guess it makes sense if you just want to have fun while drawing and the product comes second? Maybe I'm just too old for this whole webcomic bussiness...
>>93277003
>P-pakunoda?
>>93276722
>I haven't read your comic so this might not hold true to you
trust me, it doesn't. he puts lots of work in. he just makes it look easy because that way it has a casual feel, which a CYOA should.
and I don't know why his saying he just picked names from a list he compiled (over 3 years) isn't putting-in-the-effort. I love the names he chose
>>93276827

>>93277123
>Wouldn't you rather make something good than have your way?

Obviously.
Artists make webcomics because they want to.
>>93277123
>will probably be better
wrong, majority of "writers" are delusional idea guys. just because you put text to paper doesn't make you a writer
>>93276722
What most artists don't realize is that comics are actually about the story. The writing is the most important part, comics are just the medium of choice to tell that story. People take writers for granted, because they think everyone can write. They don't realize that the storytelling that gets people to keep scrolling, or turning the page is hard.
>>93276827
>>93276920
Yeah you can use any program. Just make your canvas long. Read more webtoons to get used to the format.
>>93277056
I think the average quality is about the same. Though a lot of american webtoons are horrible because they're made by weebs. Weaboos come up with the worst stories, and I've seen a lot of American webtoons that just have weird formatting. It's like they make a regular webcomic and just put it vertically, and it doesn't work as well with the scrolling format.
where's the new thread cucks
>>93277123
>Wouldn't you rather make something good than have your way?
Art takes a whole lot longer to do than writing, why would you draw a story for free if it isn't even a story you wanted to tell?
>>93277249
there needs to be a story, but I like the most aimless, seemingly-improvised stories. The important thing isn't the writing skill, but the taste. As long as the comic contains things I like, I'll read it to see those things I like, and see them doing things I like

>>93277441
Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys is extremely underrated. The writing was stupidly clever and the references were not something kids were going to know, but it sure didn't seem like a 'we're making this for parents' thing, at all. I'm not trying to argue that writers are better than artists or something stupid like that - I just wanted to point out that writing is important and a lot of webcomics could turn out a lot better with just a little more effort and a more open attitude of artists.
Also I am frustrated when I see a comic with really good art and the writing is bad. Like seeing an awesome cake splattered on the ground, it's just a shame...
>>93277662
That's kind of what I meant.
You put the work in in training yourself to become better at improvisation. The work goes into giving yourself better taste and style, and keeping lists of the things you don't improvise as well. That's similar to what I do
>>93277539

>>93277679
I'll agree that i'll read a comic with good writing and bad art over the reverse anyday

>How do you deal with pressure when in a combo?
Pressure as in the pressure of meeting deadlines, for example, or generally? Either way: good communication helps a lot with most potential issues.
>What are some problems that might arise? My partner's art is good and her style is extremely appealing so I think the only thing that could possibly fuck this thing up would be my writing.
I can't really predict potential problems with your particular project without knowing it, but I wouldn't beat yourself up about your writing, especially if you've hardly begun. Getting one or two people to read through your scripts before your artist starts drawing them up might be helpful for you.
>At what point did you decide to set up patreon and how do you communicate with your fanbase?
That's different for everyone, but for Patreon you want to have a good amount of content up first so people know what they'll be pledging for. As for communicating with your fanbase: kind of hard to go into the whole social media thing in brief here, but if you mean an existing fanbase then keep an eye on which platforms are most popular with your target audience and use them to bring them interesting stuff related to your project in addition to comic pages.
