I feel like getting into comics is very difficult.
For manga there are many different sites that have information on them, filters and advanced search and ranking options, reviews and recommendations. However for comics there appears to be no such thing.
So I went almost blind into several promising looking comics and didn't like any of them.
How do you do it? How do you find stuff that suits your taste?

Just get lucky.
Just get into it and learn what creators and styles you like.
Ask for suggestions.

Just like anime vs. cartoons, nobody gives a flying fuck about the kiddie Western crap. Just go full weeaboo, you'll be glad you did... mostly.

I mostly try whatever I hear good things about. I'm a fan of short runs like Secret Six and Forever Evil.

The old 2008 run of Secret Six or the shitty New 52 run?

Feel free to suggest me something without superheroes, little or no romance (exception for yuri), no SoL, character driven, with more than 10 issues.
If that is not specific enough action or adventure, with serious story or competitive protagonist in case of sports stuff. No 'weak' or whiny protagonist. Gore is fine too.
Much appreciated.

Silly me, I meant to quote >>93188171 of course.

Secret Six is what you're looking for. All of them are villains but not full-blown douchebags. They first start out in Villains United.

Get yourself some Donald Duck comics. Can't do anything wrong with them.

Hellboy (arguably a superhero, but he's still cool)
Sweet Tooth
Wally Wood's Cannon
The Eternaut

also this, pay attention to and follow writers and artists you enjoy

I started reading comics after BvS.
It's really easy. Know what characters you and google their best stories.
Lurk /co/ to find other gems and interesting writers.
Find more stuff of the writers you enjoyed.
Follow current stuff that get storytimed.
So, simply put: lurk and google.

Do you like extreme ultraviolence bordering on gratuitous edge? Have the story of a Vietnam veteran making his own justice in 90's America: Garth Ennis' Punisher:Max.

Can be read on this site

Keep going till you see Garth Ennis isn't writing anymore, quality seriously dips. The Punisher is technically a "superhero" character, but this is a sort of spin-off set in a "real" world where he's just a guy with a skull on his shirt.

Hellboy is absolutely amazing. A modernization and reconstruction of past century pulp with some of the best art ever put to comic, mixed with Lovecraftian horror and a tinge of post-apocalyptic depending on which spinoff you read.
Fairly sure I saw a torrent with all the Hellverse (Hellboy+everything in its universe) on tpb, check.
Pic related, also these

Ain't done.
Transmetropolitan is divisive: for some it's absolute political naivety put to comic with an insufferable protagonist, for others it's a brilliant transposition of Thompson's gonzo journalism into a greasy cyberpunk future, satirizing all of modern society. Personally, it's in the middle: it's hit or miss, sometimes its jokes fall flat and sometimes its beats are mistimed, but in general it's very much worth reading, even just for the absurdity of it.
