I try to be a pretty thick skinned guy. Over the years I just tended to bottle up whatever emotions I felt just so I wouldn't make an idiot of myself.

A reward that he wanted from the start, but now feels hollow and empty now that he has it. They are all memories now, and with time even those will disappear.

He didn't deserve this, but he got what he wanted in the end.

The animation in The Wall is just amazing. Personally, the sequence for "Goodbye Blue Sky" always hits a chord with me. The abstract way the Blitz is depicted is haunting, and the bit where the skeletal soldier gets back to his feet, waiting for the dove to dismiss him, always makes me tear up.

I first heard The Wall around 13 though, and I didn't see the film until a couple years later. I can't imagine what it must have been like to watch it as a kid that young.

Recently, though, I saw Summer Wars, and it absolutely tore me to pieces. I lost both of my grandfathers within a few months of each other last year, both of whom were respectively the last of their generations in each branch of the family. I'm not the guy you were talking to but yes. Its a fantastic movie. Remember the good parts of the Digimon Movie? The parts with them going into the internet to fight Diaboromon and the weird family stuff Tai and Matt had going on outside? Expand that into a feature length movie but it features not-digimon and the family gets more focus. Same director. I love all of Hosoda's stuff.

God bless that man. He was the counterpart to the Gale Wolf, not one ounce less noble, and his only fatal flaw was being self-aware enough to realize what part he practically had to play in relation to Reinhardt.

That's what hits me the most about LoGH. Every death - its so incidental sometimes, and so fitting in others. Every character is an example of a way to live, and we view them without a judgemental eye.

In Reuentahl we had the most wonderful representation of a survivor, and of such a forthright concept of masculinity and chivalry portrayed in animation. He came from shit, everyone hated him and tried to kill him, and he still managed to keep alive a glimmer of hope that what he made might do better in the future. He gave everything to those he loved and respected - and in the end, he accepted peacefully the role he played. All while being completely aware of the futility and vainglory that motivated him. A titan of a man and one of the best characters, in one of the best shows ever made.

In any case, "I don't think 'crying in pain in place of his superior' is among an anon's duties." Even if it can't be helped.

That scene in the Spongebob episode "Grandmas Cookies" where Spongebob sullenly leaves his grandma's house always made me tear up as a kid.
I guess it was just sad to see a character that was always happy like him trying his hardest to have composure, and then breaking down. All because everyone in Bikini Bottom were assholes who somehow thought loving your grandmother was something to be ashamed of.
