Except the target audience of this game also includes comic book readers/people who "know" about comic books. The normalfags might be the main target hence the MCU heavy roster, but considering Sam's terrible reputation inside comic circles and irrelevance in any other media there was no hope for him to make it into the game.

I want interesting characters alongside staple characters. The same characters we see everywhere is boring.

Look at Injustice 2. Characters rarely seen in games like Grodd, Atrocitius, Swampy, and Doc Fate alongside staple characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. While I think the game had a bit too many Batvillains it was a nice mix of A and C listers with DLC promising more potential surprises. Rad Spencer is the main protag of most of the Bionic Commando games and showed up in several games, anon. Yeah, they used the 09 look again, but that game was actually a sequel to the NES game, not a straight up reboot. They even remade the NES game with Bionic Commando Rearmed and then later made a follow-up that took place between Rearmed and 09.

It's the same dude in all of those games I just mentioned. It does confuse me that he's back, or that they kept his 09 look instead of going for one of his more well-known, iconic looks, like the NES one, or at least one of his Rearmed ones. But I guess the people who played MvC3 and not any of the Bionic Commando games would be more familiar with the 09 design, as much as that makes me pissed off to think about.

I'm speaking as a massive Bionic Commando fan--Spencer's actually my favorite Capcom character, even--when I say that I'm both kind of glad he's back, but also extremely confused he's back, and pissed off that I'd have to spend money to get something other than his 09 design to work with.

I actually liked BC09, despite everything about it. The gameplay itself was really fun, the multiplayer, as short-lived as it was, was amazing, and the game's level structure never bothered me much, since the game was pitched as being linear 2D gameplay, in 3D, a literal 3D Bionic Commando game. There were a ton of flaws to it though that also bothered me a lot, and it kind of pisses me off that this is the design everyone associates with Spencer these days.
