I know this isn't /co/ related, but what the hell
>>
>>93168234
they're cheap, they cover everything and everyone sells it
not to mention cheap plastic made that has no moving parts makes it more appealing for normies to collect and put them anywhere and not worry if they get lost/destroyed

I don't understand why people get worked up over these. I've been reading comics my whole life, have a huge collection, & yes I have a few of these. Specifically the Swamp Thing, the Dark Knight Returns Batman, & the Space Ghost one. They're not the crown jewels in my collection, & I have other figures I like more, but I like looking at them on my shelf. Why do people care about what other people choose to buy? Is it just autism, or is there an actual reason people don't like the pop vinyls?
>>
>>93170163
Well there's the simple fact that they're ugly, they're everywhere, and then there's the idea that so many franchises get little to no merchandise and now everyone's complacent to make basic ass Funkos instead of legitimate figures.

Me? Eh, I've never bought one and not sure I ever will, but I've gotten some as gifts and I don't hate 'em.
>>
>>93170163
No, it's autism. Funko pops are the normiest of entry level collectibles from the vinyl scene, which was, and still is, very underground. Because of that it is hated and that is literally the only reason. Some people don't like the aesthetic style (like me), which hardly justifies hating it. I can acknowledge their appeal, they have sculpt in, which Mighty Muggs, Dorbz, Munnies and other shit didn't had. They are cheap but the quality is ok.
I'd even get the ones where their style is less pronounced, like the Fallout Power Armors.

funko is shit tho, even /toy/ hates them
>>
>>93170600
/toy/ only likes high-end weeb shit, who gives a fuck what they think

Why does someone liking something you don't like upset you so?
>>
>>93170316
Bill had some fucking scruples and bless that man for exactly that reason.

As much as I adore calvin and hobbes I hope I never see licensed merchandise of them. If I never see any it means he's being respected.

The day I do see any I'll be sad because it'll be that he's dead.
>>
>>93170265
What's autistic about it? They're ugly as fuck and they're everywhere because normies eat them up. It's not really "autistic". My LCS is pretty good but it's getting increasingly taken over by these fucking things. The back room, which is a huge collection of back issue boxes and merch, used to have a pretty good variety of merch and some things like Gunpla. All of it is getting slowly muscled out as more and more of the space is getting eaten by shelves of Pops which are likewise starting to make their way to the front of the store too which is exclusively comics or board games (since it's half-comic shop, half-tabletop gaming store).

Call it autistic I guess but a lot of hobbies do straight up get worse as normies invade them because the companies increasingly alienate their long time supporters in favor of chasing a quick buck and Pops are a good indicator of that. Why make an actual nice collectible figure or other merchandise when you can just license out your IPs to Funko so they can shit out their low quality, low effort figures for easy dosh?
>>
>>93170600
>>93170718
/toy/ is absolutely tainted with weeb trash that only buy generic ass girl figures. They hate funko exactly for the reason I've said, because it's normie, that's all.
>>
>>93170753
Wasn't it those shitty Calvin peeing decal knock-offs that turned Waterson off of merchandising?

Either way I'm kind of glad Calvin and Hobbes doesn't have any merch, it feels right
>>
>>93170571
there's absolutely nothing wrong with collecting low-quality, ugly collectables anon
>>
>>93170718
>>93170791
funko is objectively trash
>>
>>93170774
They aren't replacing anything. If it sells it'll be on stores.
People get mad because Funko has licenses, but anyone that is into the industry knows that they have it because they are the only ones that even bother going after them. No one else gives a fuck, only superheroes sells toys. They aren't stealing properties or space, no one else wants them.
>>

>I wasn’t against all merchandising when I started the strip, but each product I considered seemed to violate the spirit of the strip, contradict its message, and take me away from the work I loved

>Basically, I’ve decided that licensing is inconsistent with what I’m trying to do with Calvin and Hobbes. I take cartoons seriously as an art form, so I think with an issue like licensing, it’s important to analyze what my strip is about, and what makes it work. It’s easy to transfer the essence of a gag-oriented strip, especially a one-panel gag strip, from the newspaper page to a T-shirt, a mug, a greeting card, and so on. The joke reads the same no matter what it’s printed on, and the joke is what the strip is about. Nothing is lost. My strip works differently. Calvin and Hobbes isn’t a gag strip. It has a punch line, but the strip is about more than that. The humor is situational, and often episodic. It relies on conversation, and the development of personalities and relationships. These aren’t concerns you can wrap up neatly in a clever little saying for people to send each other or to hang up on their walls. To explore character, you need lots of time and space. Note pads and coffee mugs just aren’t appropriate vehicles for what I’m trying to do here. I’m not interested in removing all the subtlety from my work to condense it for a product. The strip is about more than jokes. I think the syndicate would admit this if they would start looking at my strip instead of just the royalty checks. Unfortunately, they are in the cartoon business only because it makes money, so arguments about artistic intentions are never very persuasive to them. I have no aversion to obscene wealth, but that’s not my motivation either. I think to license Calvin and Hobbes would ruin the most precious qualities of my strip and, once that happens, you can’t buy those qualities back.
>>
>>93170824
>>93170923

> A doll communicates even less of the strip than the things mentioned before. A doll only cashes in on the recognizability of the character. Products like that take the character out of the world for which he was intended. If you stick 30 Hobbes dolls on a drugstore shelf, you’re no longer talking about a character I created. At that point, you’ve transformed him into just another overpriced knickknack. I have no interest in turning my characters into commodities. If I’d wanted to sell plush garbage, I’d have gone to work as a carny. The idea of a Hobbes doll is especially noxious, because the whole intrigue of Hobbes is that he may or may not be a real tiger. The strip deliberately sets up two versions of reality without committing itself to either one. If I’m not going to answer the question of who or what Hobbes is, I’m certainly not going to let Dakin answer it. It makes no sense to allow someone to make Hobbes into a stuffed toy for real, and deprive the strip of an element of its magic.

>In my case, I’m convinced that licensing would sell out the soul of Calvin and Hobbes. The world of a comic strip is much more fragile than most people realize. Once you’ve given up its integrity, that’s it. I want to make sure that never happens. Instead of asking what’s wrong with rampant commercialism, we ought to be asking, “What justifies it?”

>Popular art does not have to pander to the lowest level of intelligence and taste.

As someone who owns some nendos, they're more like nendoroid co-des. There isn't any articulation so they're just a static figure. Obviously there's a gap in quality, but there's also a gap in price. I wish Japan did more western characters so I could actually buy figures from cartoons I like.

That's fairly standard if the lines they have in stock aren't particularly popular or they ordered a large amount of 'em, I know that most HTs are trying to clear out the GITD Steven Universe POPs that have been shelf-warming for months.

Another great Watterson quote

>... Selling out is usually more a matter of buying in. Sell out, and you're really buying into someone else's system of values, rules and rewards.
...

Creating a life that reflects your values and satisfies your soul is a rare achievement. In a culture that relentlessly promotes avarice and excess as the good life, a person happy doing his own work is usually considered an eccentric, if not a subversive. Ambition is only understood if it's to rise to the top of some imaginary ladder of success. Someone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake. A person who abandons a career in order to stay home and raise children is considered not to be living up to his potential -- as if a job title and salary are the sole measure of human worth. You'll be told in a hundred ways, some subtle and some not, to keep climbing, and never be satisfied with where you are, who you are, and what you're doing. There are a million ways to sell yourself out, and I guarantee you'll hear about them.
>Bill Watterson in his address to Kenyon graduates of 1990
>>
>>93170244
i don't hate them as well and people can buy whatever they like but i agree with the everywhere part went to a toy fair some time ago and while it was small like 10 to 15 or so people selling stuff there more then half was dedicated to nothing but the pops

Pops are garbage designed for faggots who want to collect figures but don't want to spend money on anything of even remote quality because that would be "weird." They are the equivalent of people who watch the Big Bang Theory religiously, are huge fans of the MCU, worship Zelda OoT, and think Cowboy Bebop is the best anime ever. In other words, "lol I'm such a nerd XD." That's who you are.
