If you want the real answer here it is from a real Puerto Rican.

Basically it's not going to happen but not for the reasons other people have stated. This is like Puerto Rico's 4th or 5th time voting on state hood, but each previous time the vote had the approval of Congress before hand. This time the US said that it didn't matter what the vote came to, the decision wouldn't be approved. Puerto Ricans knew the vote was irrelevant so the only ones who voted were the obsessive pro-statehood party.

So yes we ruled in favor of statehood, but only by a minority of actual voters, and either way it doesn't matter because the US didn't approve the election.

It's just people looking for something to take pride in in their history.Even if that means making it up. Taking a genealogical route most African Americans can't look back into their lineage any further than slavery. With Slaves being sold and traded off with no warning or at young ages more often than not you can't get passed a couple generations.of actual slave relatives. That since of family history is cut off rather abruptly and at a very harsh time. So that story becomes the origin point for what ultimately makes you up. It's comparatively short and filled with very little triumph, accomplishment or positivity.

In contrast, someone of European descent was probably not a king or duke, there's a chance their family even came over as some debtor but there were better records kept none the less and you can go back beyond the Americas and chances are you find something of interest. Maybe somewhere in that history you find a coat of arms or that someone served in a war you heard about in history class, or just attended horse for some royalty. It's nothing too grand but it has some connection to known history and it goes back centuries and it's a shit load better than your great great great grandpa was born a slave worked in a field maybe got beaten a few times until he was sold to some other slave owner and bred with your great great great grandmother to produce a new generation of slaves.

So all you really know is you come from Africa and the most noteworthy thing to happen in Africa was Egypt and Egyptian culture. it's in movies, it's in cartoons, it's in the bible. So you latch on to that as part of your heritage.
