I actually think Paulo's being awfully coy in his approach. The last time he saw Lucy he was about to confess but she suddenly asked to kiss. Paulo can be pretty dim so he probably doesn't realize she was was only doing that to say goodbye before suicide. As far as Paulo should be aware Lucy very much wants to be his lover and they just have to pick back up where they left off.

In Confrontation, if I'm remembering correctly, Paulo himself says 'thrill of the chase' when asked why he pursues Lucy. Course, that was a long time ago so it's probably not as relevant now. It also doesn't hurt that he's always had sort of a one-sided rivalry with Mike, and she was into Mike for the longest time. His current infatuation with her is probably just his old feelings being amplified because he thought he'd lost her. I'm not sure, though. Paulo is hard to decipher for me.

The character was never good, they just made him worse. He was an annoying perv comedic relief with no real depth. His feelings for lucy were like his redemption arc for me, i genuinely enjoyed reading it when it was exploring the Pxl side of the story.

And the character also solely depends on the writing to express his growth in any way especially since the person writing for them is also the creator/s of said character. When the writing decides to retcon(or maybe we are supposed to be convinced somehow he never had true romantic feelings and only did it "because she was hot". It makes the character back into the title of king of shitters because instead of exploring his romantic feelings for lucy and something developing out of it for both characters she decides to pull the rug out from under you naive fools because "oh david reminded him of his feelings thousands of pages ago so thats the canon all along, aren't i consistent :^)".

If it doesn't turn around its literally not worth investing any more interest into the character because he basically slips back into his past self instead of growing like the audience normally wants to see from characters.

Taeshi's spoke about her struggles being in a straight relationship while being attracted to girls, so why not write from that instead? That'd make such a good character. I'm a privileged cisgender shitlord according to various ~trendy~ sites, but even I couldn't help but feel that Madison and to a lesser degree Matt devaluates being gay to some kind of recurring gag out of a sitcom, except hiding behind a "WE'RE PROGRESSIVE GUISE" sign and somehow getting away with it.

And then there's the whole other side of the issue where the time and effort wasted on halfassing that could've been used on other characters so they're not forgotten or their personalities are no longer flatter than cardboard.

Every time we see her being bitchy, is when either someone is being a jerk (e.g. Paulo refusing to stop hitting on her when she told him off, Paulo's "i'd be totes free to trat you like a sexual object if you were not playing for the other team", Paulo's obliviousness to Rachel's feelings) or comparing her to Lucy (gee sure feels nice to hear that you're just a replacement for someone else).

With her friends, she is much more sweet and caring than Lucy, she smiles more, participates in their activities willingly, does not just call everyone names and put them down all the time. Her sweet side is not hidden beneath layers upon layers upon more layers of Jerk.

There is only one instance of her getting physical with someone (a punch in response to Paulo's incessant creeping). We don't see her abusing any of her friends since kindergarten.

So, while she might be indeed bitchy, and rather flat as a character(not much of it to speak of save for Token Gay #2), I don't think it is fair to call her Lucy the Bitchier.

And the thing about being a Jerk With A heart Of Gold is that, well, when you are being a jerk most of the time, people are not going to see you are really nice deep inside. She seems to have gotten better after her suicide attempt and supposed therapy, so I hope that this good side starts appearing more frequently.

Lucy was always an unpleasant person but there was always something going on attached to her, even back to the bland tsundere uguu days of early volume 1 and after that her maladjustment became part of the story. Madison is JUST unpleasant (and a lot louder than Lucy ever was). The only character she's attached to is Jess but that doesn't help because Jess is bland and unimportant. She hasn't done anything of note since fucking Paulo in volume 2.

When it comes to Madison "she's a bitch" is the only thing the comic has ever really shown us.

The tone shift from "lol slapstick XD" to "Lucy is drawing blood from Mike on a regular basis" was pretty clumsy and hard to digest. It was done in flashback! It's hard to react emotionally to wonky storytelling. Plus you don't have to like her to be interested in where her story is going.

Madison's repulsiveness is quite straightforward and her presence in the comic provides nothing of interest.
