When I think about how to do it, one thing that comes to mind is kind of the She-Hulk route. Some boy, some orphan, is wounded, or otherwise cast off by society. Diana takes pity on him and, to save his life, brings him to Themyscira. The Amazons object to helping her, but she finally wins them over when she promises to take complete responsibility for the boy. In the process of healing him, he somehow takes on a fractional degree of Diana's own powers. And, since he's both superpowered and tethered to her for life, Diana decides she might as well teach him the Amazonian arts of warfare, too.

Female superheroes have never been taken seriously until now. Side kicks in general stopped being taken seriously over time because they were basically child soldiers.

Therefore women heros usually don't have side kicks because they haven't been popular until now while kid side kicks lost all credibility.
