Are we going to talk about this? Because it is weird to say the least. News sites are reporting this new Marvel character as "inspired by the Chapulin Colorado".
She will appear in Champions. I have read Champions in /co/ storytimes and it looks it is going to suck hard.

The previous issue set up a "major" plot point (Vision grounding Viv and literally trapping her in her room) and it's completely non-existant in this issue, literally not even mentioned, as Vivi is out wandering around like it's nothing.

Also the character is yet another fucking Lesbian Super Genius Woman of Color that Marvel's loved shoving into their books the last few years so at the moment she's completely worthless and interchangeable with I don't know how many other characters right now.

>>
>>93152638
Who fucking knows at this point, because it's sure not Waid.
>>
Why though.
The tech suit color choice is going to inevitably just have her be called an Iron Man rip-off. They could've at least added more color tones and tried to somewhat match the pattern of an actual red lotus.
Even if you HAD to make it a tech suit, there's so much variety nowadays that you could go with that this just comes off as generic.

She doesn't have the boomerang hammer, soundwave weapons, communication abilities, or anything else related to the character other than the name and ability to speak Spanish (Chesperin is Mexucan, she's spanish)

And her background isn't just generic, it's a stereotype at this point.

Who is this for? Even hispanic kids are less likely to get the reference given how old it is, and it's not exactly something that's very mainstream, but even with that it's so bastardized from the source material it's barely capable of holding up as a reference.

Even if it's for diversity, she's once again reduced to her race, and thus just gonna end up being some background character in an event, tops. It's not even that hard to do diversity either. Make a good character with a compelling backstory and add some melanin. Yes, culture is part if being a minority, but it's not their defining trait. It dooms it to fail as well, because not only is it one dimensional, but makes it unrelatable to people that don't come from that culture, and just further fuels the rage of a bunch of sweaty white trolls yelling about political correctness because they fear change and can't identify with a character.
Take examples from other minority characters. Icon, Montoya, Xombi, etc. Yeah, they have some relation to their culture but they're so much more than that. Like, there's so many ways to make a character, and they just keep fucking it up.
It's kind of infuriating.
>>
>>93152419
They don't have the rights, Ramos got in touch with the estate and asked if he could make a tribute.
>>
>>93152615
If they were honoring Maximiliano or Don Porfis they wouldn't be male-only in the first place. Both were more open minded on those regards, considering how mexican society was on that time. Hell Porfirio even went to the graduation ceremony to the first female doctor.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matilde_Montoya

I mean is not impossible to be sexist and still honoring those dudes, but it would be extremely hipocritical. Don't know about King Fernando.
>>
>>93152324
>Not making them be one of the other cultures who were conquerer by aztecs from time to time to get people to sacrifice instead of their own

Of fucking course only Aztecs exist in Marvel
>>
>>93152666
>>93152456

Damn satanic trips on that one.
Also this is something that always bugs me when the "only one heir and it turns to be gay" dilemma comes up. They never think of getting a sperm donor or to get a surrogate mother to continue the bloodline, they just leave it to die.

Well being honest if they are so short-sighted that they only have one heir per generation, maybe it's for the best that they die out.
>>
>>93152694

>>
>>93151603
>Her stupid fucking story had to include "The usually pass down the title to the boys but I'm the only child so I had to show them!!!" Backstory.

>And yet another super brilliant engineer mechanic girl in what amounts to an iron man suit.

Although that just makes it worse that her aztec family has been naming their firstborns after a Spanish King out of honor for centuries, wouldn't have been as bad if the family was just a bunch of Spaniards who migrated.

this was a conscious decision for this book. i'm hoping its to illustrate the above point - a future scene where the character goes "look, i didn't ask for these cannons, that i'm stacked doesnt make me a feminist enemy"

That's exactly what makes it bad. In Mexico there was an era of slavery. Mexican's don't have Spaniard last names out of honor or interbreeding they have them because they were owned by Spaniards with those last names.

The idea that she comes from an old indigenous warrior bloodline and honors the King of Spain is ridiculous. As a Mexifag it pisses me off to no end.

There are tons of other problems too. A big one is that here
>>93156711
she says her bloodline comes from an area that became the United States. Then it shows a typical mesoamerican scene complete with a pyramid. However that style of pyramid isn't found anywhere near the states. In fact I'm not aware of any pyramids found in those regions since the tribes there are primarily pueblo people (nothing wrong with that, just a very different culture). It's almost as if the writer originally wanted to say that "it goes back to pre-cuauhtemoc days" (or something equivalent) but was asked by the editor to change it so that Americans could relate to her.

In your opinion, is Hummingbird a better Mexican character?

Personally, although she's another Mexican character with links to ancient Aztec past - instead of one of the MANY other possible cultures or ethnic backgrounds of Mexico >>93152854 - from what I have learned here, that past is ridiculously well researched, like including ridiculously obscure symbolic subtleties you only learn from reading codexes and work of Mesoamerican archaeologists.

Plus, she's fun, insane and kind of "not completely there" (dodging the "genius girl" trope? I don't know if that's a bad or good thing. But it is different).

>This much cringe.

First of all, >>93156711, says the soup, Pozole, is Aztec. She doesn't say anything about herself, in fact she says that her ancestors came from a region in the United States. As I pointed out earlier that is retarded for many reasons (including the fucking pyramid in the picture).

Second of all, Aztec isn't really a thing. It's a term popularized by Europeans who had trouble keeping track of the over four hundred tribes in Mexico. Depending on context, "Aztec" may refer to different things. The only objectively correct usage of the term is to refer to the Mexica (read: Meshika) tribe in the period when they were nomads before they founded Mexico (read: Meshiko) Tenochtittlan and became Mexica (read: Meshika). In fact Aztec means "from Aztlan" (the original home of the Mexica before they became nomads) in the same way American means "from America".

Typically what Europeans refer to when they say Aztec is a big empire that sprouted up around Lake Texcoco in what is now called the Mexico City valley. You see, there were a lot of different tribes with big city-states both around and on (floating cities) the lake. Three of the big city-states (including the Mexico-Tenochtitlan) decided to form an alliance called the Triple Alliance. It is this group that Europeans often refer to as Aztec.

Moreover, the Triple Alliance didn't really conquer people (that's just something people say to justify the Spaniards), rather they created states of perpetual war with other city-states (ones that they could have conquered if they wanted to). Their goal was to keep their warriors constantly trained for battle (it was a huge part of their culture and every male had to serve in their military). Within the Alliance the city-states would organize planned battles (termed: "flower wars" after an ancient Toltec tradition) with the intention of producing sacrifices, this was different from normal battle.

(cont.)
>>
>>93165676
All of that said, yes there are a lot of other cultures in Mexico that they could have based a character off of. It is true that far more is documented about the Triple Alliance. Part of this is from the codices but it's likely the more major part is due to their warrior spirit combined with the fact that they transmitted information through song-poems (even through a period of slavery where they were forced to tear down their cities to build Spanish style cities on top and had their languages, religion, philosphy, and history all banned, they still managed to maintain their history to some extent). Why do song-poems matter? Compare them to the Maya who had a written language with big libraries containing history, religion, philosophy, and other information. All it took to wipe almost the entirety of Mayan knowledge from the world was to burn their libraries.

The most frustrating thing about them doing Triple Alliance characters is that the writer is often so poorly informed on the subject matter.

Hummningbird just from the fact that she's not a priviliged Spaniard who comes from a long line of cultural appropriation is already 10,000 times a better character than Red Locust. That still doesn't mean Hummingbird is perfect.

Moreover, modern Mexico also has it's own culture and identity separate from the indigenous culture and identity. It has a complicated history frought with many wars and heroes. I am Mexican indigenous and I would like to see a comic that deals with that BUT I do NOT want to see garbage like this!

Nobody uses Aztec for anything that isn't the Mexica on this day tho, and if anything people just ignore that there were other cultures besides them and the Maya because either don't care or skipped history class on Mexican elementary/high school/fuck even in college I see half a semester of prehispanic history.

Also is not as much a conquering thing as much as it was kind of a shitty deal with the neighbors. Sure the flower wars were kind of agreed on equal parts, but Mexicas were the Spartans of Mesoamerica, the smaller groups eventually grew fed up of them, which is when some went to aid the Spanish instead.

Yet I agree that this is just a fuck up from the writer in charge not knowing shit about what he wanted as background for Fernanda/La Langosta Roja. It's all a clusterfuck.

Besides if the brotherhood comes from the lost territory of Mexico then she should be something more on the line of Apaches and similar, Aztlan is theorized to be on Nayarit which is closer to the center of Mexico than up north.

>and...prehispanic history.
You're right but that's beside the point. Schools in the US shouldn't really be required to learn about all the different tribes that existed in a separate country. They (poorly) cover a bit of the major mesoamerican tribes as part of ancient history and that's reasonable. At the same time, just because schools cover something poorly doesn't mean that it's okay to perpetuate misinformation.

Wait why was Mexico wanting independence but still wanting to be ruled by this guy?
>>
>>93170836
Going by all the instances of Spanish "colonies" asking for kings right after independence I'm inclined to believe that Spaniards were cool guys way ahead in human rights because of their catholic background over the dumb protestants that always rampaged over everyone until they were caught in the act or became inefficient.
Also, that the slavery thing was invented by faggots who wanted to create an anti-West sentiment in Latin-America to advance mostly directionless agendas; the "revised" version of Spanish occupation of Peru is along the lines of that and since that one wasn't adopted or taught by murderous commies and every semblance of order outside of the capital comes from that era I'm going to believe it.
>>
>>93170836
I don't know about the rest of the countries, but in my country's case they taught us that the juntas swore allegiance to the king after he was captured by Napoleon's forces so they could buy additional time to organize their forces and avoid an immediate response from the Viceroy's armies (early attempts to revolt in places like Peru were crushed). Also, Napoleon's figure was highly demonized during that epoch.
>>
>>93171002
lolno, Spanish periods of slavery and occupation were far more complicated than that. There was a period of slavery and it's strange to believe otherwise considering all the evidence. That said, the church's involvement is also fairly complicated in that sometimes they were less heavy handed than the other Spanish political bodies at play and other times they were worse. There were efforts by the church to understand and document indigenous languages and beliefs but the primary purpose was so that they could aid in religious conversion. This is why you get weird things like people being baptized under indigenous iconography and latin-american catholicism having all these weird cult beliefs intertwined into it. At the same time the church was also involved in a lot of torture and banning of religious beliefs. In Yucatan a certain priest collected and burned a mountain of Mayan books. There are a few written reports that the fire could be seen all the way from Cuba (forget where in Cuba exactly). This priest repented later on and spent his later years trying to collect and document all of the remaining Mayan literature (barely any survived).

That said, the church wasn't the only political body at play. Many of the atrocities were committed by non-missionaries. Some are even documented in the codices.

There are even some nahuatl records that talk about corruption by politicians and government officials, well after the period of slavery. Stuff like banning indigenous people from being allowed to produce certain goods so that Spaniards could monopolize the market and so on.

You might want to think it's just anti-west propaganda but you'd only be deluding yourself, especially since no matter what there would already be anti-west sentiment in the region.

I am Mexican indigenous and I would like to see a comic that deals with that BUT I do NOT want to see garbage like this!

As a Mexican with some indigenous roots (not much) & a hunger for ALL history (modern and ancient), that's something I would really love to see too.

And I think Hummingbird could potentially be that character to explore that (and many other interesting things) through. Or at least she is in a perfect spot to be - obviously with a good direction and the support of people who have both a knack & passion for this kind of stuff.

The fun thing about her is that right now Hummingbird is mostly a blank canvas - we know next to nothing of her life and the precise nature of her connection with the teotl - and the "mistakes" done with her are fairly minor and easily waved away by explaining that due her convenient amnesia they come from biased sources (the Coyote, who is most likely Huehuecoyotl, a man with its essence - a demigod/Hombre-dios/something else? - or a human acting in his behalf) or uninformed people with only second-hand knowledge of the truth (the disposable minions like the Lobos werewolves and the not-so-disposable like the Salamander, who seems mostly enforcer muscle with an inkling of understanding).

The Lobos revaled she is rumored to be the reincarnation of Huitzilopochtli. But they themselves admitted that "opinions vary" and aren't probably in the know about what she really is.

From what I understand, reading books on the subject & talking to people, the idea of a incarnated or reincarnated teotl is not exactly right, if compared to say, hindu / buddist concepts of reincarnation.

There were the transient incarnations, most the ones destined for sacrifice, the teixiptlahuan, where a person would adopt aspects of a particular teotl and with it, slowly become transformed into the teotl (or at least, acknowledged as such) by the essence or force or power of the teotl that would enter or awaken in him/her.

There were also those who momentarily became an teoixiptla for other specific purposes, like curing people or performing rites (Tlazolteotl forgiving sins).

A more rarer form was those who claimed, mostly rulers, to hold the essence of a teotl, of one of the "grandparents", since birth, as one of their "souls" (people having multiple souls). To these many powers & fantastic capacities were attributed and great reverence was given (as long as they behaved & accomplished what was expected of them).

And in a possible greater scale were the ones whose history is submerged or indistinguishable from myth in the older eras: Ce Ácatl Topiltzin Quetzalcóatl, Kukulkán, the Divine Mayan Twins and all the sacred ancestors who walked with the gods & spoke to them as almost equals.

So where does Hummingbird/Aracely lie?

Of course, we have to take into account that things could be different in the Marvel Multiverse, where Teteo & Teotl have to exist at the side of Odin & the Aesir, the Olympians, Dr. Strange & Dormammu, Chton & Gaea, Galactus & Eternity, the Celestials & Beyonders.

Also, as far as I know, the most prevalent examples of the underlying spiritual metaphysics of Marvel have people with one soul each ala most common Western depictions of it. There could be room for something closer (and a sense, Eternity and the Aspects kinda resemble some properties of Teotl in some, but not all ways).

Also, the Teteo & other pantheons in the Marvel Universe are "second generation" gods and whenever two gods or more of different pantheons appear in the same story, they usually behave more like individuals ala Greek gods or magic super-powered bricks (Superman with some abracadabra thrown in) than anything resembling the most amorphous, changing, boundless, "without clear borders" nature of some of them. That said, some stories depict a more malleable sort (usually Loki's with its "gods are stories" elements), but normally occur exclusively inside one pantheon and devolve to the other approach as soon as a foreign god shows up.

Owing to those limitations of this shared universe, one can't discount the possibility she's what it says on the tin: a mortal reincarnation of the teotl " entity" known as Huitzilopochtli. Which is not bad, from my point of view. It's something kinda unique and sufficiently interesting.

"Chespirito" and his family spend decades fighting one of his closest friends for the ownership of a secondary character (he even died and never reconciled with the "Chilindrina") I wonder how much they will fight for this, how much they will ask???
Honestly I want to see Ramos burn.

But what if she were more? Something else, something weirder? Most codices and oral stories depict Huitzilopochtli as an absolute determined being: he will undertake any action that is necessary for him and his people to achieve his perceived goals. He's the essence of force of will. If there were one god that would utterly break any convention regarding souls & how things are "supposed" to function, despite the insane cost or complete "strangeness" that may result of it, in order to achieve his aims, it should be him. And if there are pantheons that defy expectations and function in their own crazy ways, the Mesoamerican ones should probably be among them.

So, what if she were a literal fleshy extension into the material world of his larger self in the cosmos? What if she had some or all of the essence of Huitzilopochtli + all the souls of all the dead warriors that pledged allegiance and lineage to his tlaquimiolli? What if all the teteo share the same "soul" and she is the manifestation of the conglomerate or aspects that are Huitzilopochtli + a mortal body? What if she had since birth the souls of a Mexican girl and the essence of the god, but lost the first in her trafficking to Houston and now must function with the second and thus her amnesia? What if she's the blend of two, three or four teteo gods?

What if she doesn't have a soul at all and is just a sentience created by the force of will of the universe, of Teotl?

What if Teyolia, Ihiyotl and Tonalli are things in the Marvel Universe and a writer like Ewing can find support for it in some obscure 70's comic?

I know that whatever ends up being the pantheon of teteo in the Marvel Universe will be a bastardization of it. But that doesn't mean it should be a pathetic watered down one; with research & work it could be a great one! Something one can admire, feel it has the right tones, that it clicks the right clicks, grandiose, something worthy of being read. Something like what Lee, Kirby & Simonson did with the Asgardians, that even adds good, enjoyable elements and twists to it.

I dream of a good creative team taking the time to explore it in great detail over the course of 50 issues or more. Along with many other facets of Mexico, both history and current reality - showing the secrets, the paradoxes, the diversity of people and places, the strange, the sad stories and heart warming things, the corners and oddities that abound in this land stretched in a million different crossing directions,

And I think Hummingbird, with her dual nature, can serve as our introduction & explorer to all that, with her amnesia she has now to learn again about her home and see how it differs under the light of the memories of the "multiple lives" she had (the ancient Huitzilopochtli teotl who guided the Mexica, maybe previous mortal holders of her essence & the Mexican girl she was until recently) and the "weird new thing" she is now since awakening in that truck container with no memories and an angry Spider clone hobo picking her up.

I want to see her meeting her family.

I don't know, maybe make so they are from all corners; throw a hard-working ice cream shop owner Chinese grandma from the immigrant community in the northern states or Sinaloa, a stern Mayo or Yaqui mechanic granpa from Cajeme, another Nahua grandpa from San Luis Potosí who is a retired firefigther, a mestizo grandma historian from Yucatan. Or make it so she is mestizo from Spanish and Tlaxcalteca ascendancy (the ultimate irony?) originally from Puebla.

Also, I would like to see her grapple with some questions of identity (but not let the whole comic by devoured by it).

Like, Aracely is a "pagan god". What if she learns she was a pious Catholic school girl before all this?

Will she remain Christian? Is she really the same girl that was praying to Jesus back then? What weight does her memories as Huitzilopochtli of the destruction of the sacred city of Tenochtitlan and the conversion of his chosen people carry? How much laughs at her expense will the other teteo have when they learn of this?

Will she seek to reinstate the old ways, accept or reject the "new" religion of the invader/the faith her old grandma taught her in Sunday school? Or will she subvert all?

Does she believe in God? Can SHE believe in "that Spanish god"?

What does she want to do with this new Mexico of the XXI Century? Who will oppose her or help her? Does she have time or the power to do something with Micltan coming (& all the superhero crap too)?

>>93176525

Sorry for taking so long to respond. Your posts were quite substantial and I wanted to take the time to think about them more thoroughly.

I agree that some really interesting and honest stuff could be done with the material and I do think Hummingbird is in a great spot to do that with.

I am concerned that delving too much into Nahua religion could rustle some feathers (whehter that's good or bad I do not know). For instance there are those (especially in European circles) who disagree with all of the philosophical aspects of Teotl as a thing (they much prefer the narrative where Teotl = God, Nahua philosophy doesn't exist, Nahua religion is too primitive to compare to Christianity). That said, I think it would be disingenuous to cater to these groups.

There are certainly lots of interesting things that could be done with Hummingbird while still leaving things very open. One idea I like is to make her a Huitznahua (goddess of the southern stars) with amnesia. Two notable stories come to mind.

The first is about the Huitznahua woman, Malinalxochitl, who guided the early Mexica tribe.
https://tlacatecco.com/2009/01/29/malinalxochitl/

The second story is neither an old legend nor even a story about a Huitznahua. Most likely it is a frivolous modern invention made up to explain a popular song. At any rate, it has, in my opinion, several elements that would make sense as a huitznahua story.
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Bikina#Leyenda_cristera_de_La_Bikina
I could maybe provide a translation if people want it (I could not find an English version of the story), though another anon could probably write it up sooner.
