Why doesn't Gordon run for city mayor?

See the Dark Knight scene where he meets Dent in his office. He's not a politician. he's just doing the best job he can. He'd never make it to mayor because Gotham is too corrupt and he's too controversial and if he did make it his power as a law enforcement agent would be gutted.

IRL this is all bullshit because a police commissioner essentially is a politician and a lapdog to the mayor and a police PR person more than anything else. Even chiefs are a million times more political and less hands on than Gordon. He behaves more a like a lieutenant or sergeant. They're the highest rank that are still doing police work.

Because he's far more efficient as a commissioner. He couldn't do nearly as much good work if he was a mayor. He also wouldn't be able to work with Batman in the same capacity.

He DID run, back in the 90s, but only because he had been forcibly demoted by the current, corrupt Mayor, Krol, and some political hustler convinced him he would have a better chance of beating Krol than his female, liberal competition, Marion Grange.

Bruce Wayne didn't support his campaign, because he supported Grange even though they disagreed on some issues, and because he knew Gordon would be wasted in politics and that he's a much better ally and asset to Gotham as police commissioner. So he made a big donation to Grange's campaign in exchange for her appointing Gordon back to his old job, and he eventually dropped out of the race.

Why would anyone vote for the guy who allowed his city to become infested with an entire ecosystem of supervillains during his tenure as police chief?
