Cats Don't Dance

It's a little iffy in that the story isn't a very strong one in my opinion but it's got some good songs and I think it something that, if made for adult audiences, adults would've loved and appreciated more than kids (Just take the theme and the overall tone and push it further and it could've been better).

But I adore it. Darla is the perfect villain

It just failed because of Turner's animation studio being dissolved during the Time Warner merger. I don't think the far-off future of 1997 gave any particular shits about an obscure niche of the early internet, and if Zootopia is any indication, no one cares about it now, either.

Fight Club did so poorly that Orion Pictures was disbanded. It didn't make its money back until well after rentals. Part of the problem was that David Fincher was told to cast nobodies (Orion was a boutique studio originally created for Woody Allen) and he instead put 3 name actors at the top of the billing who wouldn't work scale.

After it went overseas, by which point the studio was being shuttered. This was 1999, and studios couldn't afford to determine successes from foreign/rental/home video. It still did half its production cost in domestic box office which is a failure by most calculations.

Also while I hate the marketing costs meme, I remember it was heavily advertised for what was supposed to be a low budget independent movie. It's likely that $100,853,753 still didn't break even.

Fincher is a greedbag who's careless with other peoples' money and when it pays off he's forgiven. But note that even a name director like him still can't get conventional backing for The Goon since it doesn't have pretty boy actors in it.

Probably because "treasure island but with aliens" sounds like a weird plot to most people. I watched it when I was in high school and ended up stumbling on this girl on deviantart who like EXCLUSIVELY drew the main character and wrote long journal posts about how empty she feels because she's truly in love with the character and it hurt knowing he'd never really hold her. I kinda lost interest in ever rewatching the movie after that.

It'd be cool if they chased down some other ancient treasure. It's been long enough since Atlantis has come out by now so that could be something they could explore. Dreamworks make it happen, I'll even settle for 3d animation if you'll bring back the voice actors for all three (or match them as well as possible if any of em are dead).

I bought this on a movie collection of Laika films recently (Had Coraline, Paranorman and one other movie on it too) which made me think it didn't do that well if it's already being packaged with their arguably more successful films (but stop motion has trouble competing to 3d in general).
