In jr high, I had a friend who raved about King of the Hill. I tried watching a couple episodes and found it boring. It was no simpsons or family guy. I just couldn't understand what his obsession was about.

But someone gave me the DVDs a couple years ago and now I think it's the best show I've ever seen. And in rewatching the golden era simpsons and family guy, I realize that those haven't aged that well (especially the latter. It's embarrassing actually).

Same. I think some of it was being turned away from the "kids who save the world with kid-related gadgets" because of the fucking Spy Kids trilogy that ran about the same time as KND had begun. Also didn't help that it seemed like the show was very indecisive about the origins and nature of its world. Sometimes it sounded like the kids and crazed adults were just caught up in a big make believe game while the rest of the world actually didn't give a shit and continued on without a care, then at others there was the whole origin where kids were originally some immortal youngling race and made adults to be servants.

It isn't very wacky and vulgar like most American adult cartoons and usually grounded in reality. Compared to the likes of South Park or any of Seth MacFarlane's shows, it's pretty refreshing in that regard.

Super grounded low key comedy with very well written characters. Not that they're deep or particularly interesting, but you get such a sense of them from every episode you would know EXACTLY how they would react in any given situation. There's a reason random people on 4chan can write whole paragraphs of hypothetical situations where Hank and co. discuss the relative merits of shonen anime or Bobby becomes a Brony and it's so on point you could believe it was an actual episode.

I could never get shows like into Ren and Stimpy or Invader Zim. On the flipside I loved KND to bits but most of my friends never watched it.

Its a show that grows on you and its just very relaxing to watch. Like a sitcom most of the humor comes from knowing the characters and their mannerisms and seeing their reactions so its not a scripted "where's the punchline" sort of show much like Home Movies which a lot of people also have a hard time getting into.
