I've only got recently exposed to Sam and Max.

I enjoy it. It doesn't make me laugh very often, at least not in the normal sense. But I find the dialogue to be amazing. It's kind of like Trout Mask Replica to me.

I love the animated series, but I haven't read the comics, and I've never played any of the Telltale games, so what should I seek out next?

the cartoon is the most underwhelming of all of them imo. i don't hate it, but it seems like a watered down version of the comics and games. I bet you'll love Sam & Max hit the road. def check out the games.
