So he made him as Marvel's DeathStroke completely in earnest, as neither a reference or a joke. Gwen seems to be in a depression spiral. Graduating high school is either one of the triggers, or one of the results of that spiral. When we actually see this part of the story, she's given up on life because she has zero faith in herself.

I'm thinking she was doing bad, didn't get the help she needed, and things just snowballed as they went on. She clearly doesn't have the support she needs to succeed - her mom is a bit of a pushover, and her dad just acts stern and probably makes her feel worse about not succeeding at things.

Honestly, I'm reading Gwen's story, and all she really needs is support and guidance. Batroc was able to mentor her and teach her how to fight, while her brother was able to inspire her to get her life back on track instead of throwing it away.

Mine did. We had to have logs of community service and compile it along with a bunch of other stuff into a huge ass binder encompassing all 4 years and then had to present it during an exit interview. It was a panel of three judges and if they didn't find our binder sufficient they'd hold us back from graduating even if you cleared everything else.

I had good enough grades to pad out the binder through the years but for community service I just bullshitted some logs and got my family to do different signatures. My parents agreed to it because even they thought it was a bullshit requirement.

Of course the interviewers only cared about the community service and asked me about that and again I was able to bullshit how "meaningful" it was to me. I was able to pass but I know a bunch of other kids who put off the binder until literally the last month and had nothing to show for freshman/sophmore/junior year.
