Actually I think he was losing steam even before Barber left. If you compare his first years worth of issues (or even his work on Wreckers or Chaos Theory) with the the second years with Overlord or Tyrest/Star Saber/Pharma, his initial work is genuinely clever like the Annual that explores TF religion or issue 12 which uses flashbacks cleverly so they can have two artists on one issue. Everything afterward just felt hamfisted such as Rodimus being staked on a cross with the Matrix to override Tyrest's killswitch being the most egregious.

Lost Light is doing shit in sales (worse than TAAO) and TAAO was just axed.

Well not really but it was doing shit in numbers and IDW asked Scott to change something up in hopes or rising numbers but she didn't want to so she ended the run. Same thing can happen to Roberts any moment now.

Funny story we should know is Hasbro and a number of US companies had too a big say in the matter and would not give enough time or budget to allow the Japs to flesh out the shows. The whole trilogy shitstorm was a collaboration, Takara had to answer to Hasbro the whole time.

They wanted the English dub out MONTHS before the Japanese episodes were supposed to air. Apparently CN made it even worse because they wouldn't air the show till a large number of episodes were made.

Production kept switching companies first mainframe and finally actas, because the former companies did not want to deal with the low budget and horrendous production schedule which kept getting smaller because of the switches. Dreamwave was supposed to supply some critical character designs and writing to assist production but they were having troubles at the time and couldn't supply. Actas had to go in blind and shovel out that shitfest on their own. Best thing is the Eng dub is no better than the Jp one, the script was just that rushed and terrible.

Energon meanwhile had an even smaller budget but higher ups wanted the exact same number of episodes as Armada. Don't know which company, Hasbro or Takara, was the one responsible for wanting a 1 hour plot stretched over 52 episodes.

Moral of the story: Hasbro pulled a Sonic 06 on Takara and that's why Energon is the best cartoon ever.

A big problem people are overlooking with Lost Light is the art. Milne had this perfect balance of mecha anime and cartoon in his art which made the characters look like actual robots. This new artist makes them all look tiny and way more cartoony than they should be. The only thing I think the new artist does better is give the bots more facial variation. It's slight but its definitely better than Milne's "give everyone the same exact face" schtick.

Cyclonus, Swerve, Magnus, Rung and Megs all have very different faces from one another and that's picking a few characters. I think the only characters who suffer a bit from same face are Rodimus, Drift, Nightbeat and Skids who all look really similar in the face.
