the only thing rough about the beginning is some really wonky art. The animation back then tended to be pretty good and the writing was fine.
Also an extremely super terrible obvious animation error in Together Breakfast when Amethyst's door doesn't close after she goes in but it plays the sound and Steven acts like it closed.

I come from a background that put emphasis on self-sufficiency and being taught not to cry. Like a
