Everything about the Pigeon Man episode is just aggressively sad, especially how it ends. And I'm not talking about the dumb "Pigeon Man actually committed suicide at the end" theory. Mainly, I'm talking about the fact that this is an episode of a kid's tv show that's basically about the fact that some people will never fit in anywhere, ever, and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

I think what most people forget is that Pigeon Man ends on a somewhat optimistic note. He's a man with a calling, and his bad experience in Arnold's city didn't really convince him to stop following it- it just reminded him that he has a larger purpose out there, away from the people who don't get it:

But the implication is that there's never going to be enough Arnolds out there to outnumber the people who can't or won't understand. Pigeon Man's probably going to be alone forever, because that's just the way life turns out for some people. The episode's message seems to be that you can't save people like that- you can befriend them, offer them a temporary respite from the relentless loneliness, but it will only ever be temporary.

It always seemed a bit out of character for Hey Arnold!, a show that pretty much always went out of its way to show that there was hope for even the most miserable people.

I finally got to see the finale not too long ago, I loved the show as a kid but when the final season and finale kicked in I was gone at a military school and never got to see it.
